Using large language models to create lexicons for interpretable text models with high content validity: The suicide risk lexicon.

Researchers often want to measure a variety of constructs such as anxiety, discrimination, or loneliness in text data from surveys, interviews, social media, and electronic health records. Using large language models (LLMs)-although optimal for text classification-remain infeasible for some researchers due to concerns around computational expertise, cost, privacy, and compute requirements. Therefore, some researchers prefer to use lightweight models for large data sets or interpretable models to avoid mistakes in high-stakes scenarios. Lexicons offer simple baselines to LLMs by searching for r

Patient Experiences with Relapsing-Remitting and Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis: Development of a Conceptual Model to Inform Clinical Outcome Assessment Evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune-mediated neurodegenerative disorder. The United States Food and Drug Administration recommends using clinical outcome assessments (COAs) to measure concepts that matter to patients in clinical trials and to document the content validity of the COAs using conceptual models of patient experience. This study aimed to explore and document the patient experience of signs, symptoms, and health-related quality of life impacts of relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) and primary progressive MS (PPMS) to inform future COA validation research. METHODS: We

Paediatric bipolar disorder and its controversy.

OBJECTIVES: Paediatric bipolar disorder - bipolar disorder occurring in prepubertal children - is a diagnosis subject to considerable controversy. Whilst historically considered to be very rare, proponents since the 1990s have argued that mania can present differently in children and, as such, is much more common than previously thought. Such proposals raise questions about the validity of proposed phenotypes and potential risks of iatrogenic harm. METHODS: I critically examine the construct of paediatric bipolar disorder using Robins and Guze's (1970, American Journal of Psychiatry126, 983-9

Cross-cultural validity and reliability of the BRIEF-P at age 2 and 4.5 years in children born at risk of neonatal hypoglycemia.

Executive function (EF) encompasses several neurocognitive processes that are important in self-regulation of behavior and the attainment of social and cognitive competencies. While much progress has been made in developing valid measures for adult and adolescent EF, there is a dearth of valid measures for preschool children. Given the steep trajectory of neuropsychological development among this age group and the importance of EF, a valid measure for clinical assessment and research is needed that can capture EF in the everyday context of early childhood. The Behavior Rating Inventory of Exec

Republic of Georgia estimates for prevalence of drug use: Randomized response techniques suggest under-estimation.

BACKGROUND: Validity of responses in surveys is an important research concern, especially in emerging market economies where surveys in the general population are a novelty, and the level of social control is traditionally higher. The Randomized Response Technique (RRT) can be used as a check on response validity when the study aim is to estimate population prevalence of drug experiences and other socially sensitive and/or illegal behaviors. AIM: To apply RRT and to study potential under-reporting of drug use in a nation-scale, population-based general population survey of alcohol and other d

Development of a core outcome set for studies involving patients undergoing major lower limb amputation for peripheral arterial disease: study protocol for a systematic review and identification of a core outcome set using a Delphi survey.

BACKGROUND: The development of a standardised reporting set is important to ensure that research is directed towards the most important outcomes and that data is comparable. To ensure validity, the set must be agreed by a consensus of stakeholders including patients, healthcare professionals and lay representatives. There is currently no agreed core outcome set for patients undergoing major lower limb amputation for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) for either short- or medium-term research outcomes. By developing these sets we aim to rationalise future trial outcomes, facilitate meta-analysis

Translation and psychometric properties of a Spanish version of the College Alcohol Problems Scale.

Hispanic and Spanish-speaking college students are under-represented in alcohol intervention and prevention research. There is a need for brief, empirically validated Spanish versions of measures related to alcohol use and consequences. The objective of this study was to translate the 8-item College Alcohol Problems Scale (CAPS) into Spanish and evaluate the psychometric properties of this measure compared to the original English. Bilingual experts in interventions for Hispanic college students and youth used a translation back-translation process. 125 Hispanic undergraduate students from a la

Investigating social drones for recreational running through co-design.

INTRODUCTION: Human-drone interaction is an emerging field investigating ways to extend the conventionally passive role of drones with autonomous, socially interactive functionalities. Drones offer unique opportunities for applications, such as exercise support, due to their mobility and flexibility. While previous research has studied drones for, e.g., pacing, gait analysis, and accessibility in running contexts, we propose that an equally crucial part of such applications is the socially interactive role of the drone. METHODS: We present a study in two phases. In the first phase, we conduct

Pain-related anxiety and anxiety sensitivity across anxiety and depressive disorders.

Fear-anxiety-avoidance models posit pain-related anxiety and anxiety sensitivity as important contributing variables in the development and maintenance of chronic musculoskeletal pain [Asmundson, G. J. G, Vlaeyen, J. W. S., & Crombez, G. (Eds.). (2004). Understanding and treating fear of pain. New York: Oxford University Press]. Emerging evidence also suggests that pain-related anxiety may be a diathesis for many other emotional disorders [Asmundson, G. J. G., & Carleton, R. N. (2005). Fear of pain is elevated in adults with co-occurring trauma-related stress and social anxiety symptoms. Cogni

Are the EQ-5D-5L and EQ-HWB-9 valid instruments for measuring informal carer outcomes for use in economic evaluations?

OBJECTIVES: Despite growing interest in incorporating informal carer outcomes into economic evaluations, evidence on the performance of utility measures for informal carers remains limited. This study assesses the psychometric performance of the EQ‑5D‑5L and EQ‑HWB‑9 in capturing informal carer outcomes for economic evaluations. METHODS: This study utilized cross-sectional EQ-DAPHNIE survey data from English‑speaking countries (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, and US) to evaluate the EQ‑HWB‑9 (UK pilot value set) and EQ‑5D‑5L (country‑specific value sets), assessing distributional (i.e., a

Validation of the Japanese version of the death and dying distress scale.

BACKGROUND: The Death and Dying Distress Scale (DADDS) is a self-report instrument used to assess distress related to dying and death in patients with advanced cancer. We aimed to test the reliability and validity of the Japanese-translated version of the DADDS (DADDS-J) and evaluate its psychological properties in patients with advanced cancer in Japan. METHODS: Japanese participants with advanced cancer (n = 200) completed the DADDS and additional tools measuring depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9), anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7), quality of life (Functional Assessment of

Cross-cultural adaptation and cognitive interview-based content validation of the English Participation Behaviour Questionnaire (PBQ), to measure participation in individuals with hand injuries.

BACKGROUND: Hand injuries can significantly impair individuals' ability to engage in essential daily and social activities, necessitating valid and culturally relevant tools to assess participation limitations. The Participation Behaviour Questionnaire (PBQ), originally developed in Persian and grounded in the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), was designed to evaluate the extent of participation restrictions following hand and upper limb injuries. PURPOSE: This study aimed to translate and cross-culturally adapt the PBQ for use among Canadian English-sp

Further psychometric examination of the Intimate Partner Violence Internalized Stigma Scale (IPVIS; Brunton & Harris, 2023): Examining criterion-related validity.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is any physical, sexual, or psychological abuse or violence, including stalking and coercive behavior such as degradation, intimidation, and control. IPV self-stigma is the awareness of and agreeance with negative IPV stereotypes/attitudes that are internalized by individuals victimized by IPV. IPV stereotypes contribute to self-stigma (e.g., internalization of beliefs and stereotypes, and anticipation of adverse reactions based on the stigma associated with IPV), which may be a barrier to help-seeking. However, the lack of psychometrically sound measurement of

Exploring Adolescent Abortion Information Sources and Preferences post-Dobbs in the Midwestern United States.

Adolescents face increasing obstacles to abortion services and information. Limited research post-Dobbs suggests that adolescents turn to social media for information, but more research is needed to understand where adolescents expect to find reliable information about abortion and access to care. We conducted in-depth interviews with participants aged 16-19 years from Midwestern states (Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Michigan, Ohio, and Minnesota) to explore how they engage with abortion information and which sources they trust and prefer. Interviews were conducted via Zoom bet

The vague language use scale: Clinical utility and psychometrics from adults with traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Pragmatic communication difficulties encompass many distinct behaviours, including the use of vague and/or insufficient language, a common characteristic following traumatic brain injury (TBI) that negatively impacts psychosocial outcomes. Existing assessments evaluate pragmatic communication broadly, often with only one or two items capturing each behaviour, thus limiting sensitivity and precision to variations within each behaviour. Given that greater nuance is needed to detect subtle pragmatic communication differences and investigate underlying cognitive mechanisms, a more refi

[Potential analysis of research on speech therapy-led communication training in aphasia following stroke].

HEALTH PROBLEM: In Germany, about 100,000 people currently suffer from aphasia. This speech disorder occurs as a result of neurologic events such as stroke or traumatic brain injury. Aphasia causes major limitations in social participation and quality of life and can be associated with unemployability and social isolation. For affected persons, it is essential to regain and maintain autonomy in daily life, both at work and with family and friends. The loss of autonomy is perceived much more dramatically than the loss of speech. Clients wish to minimise this loss of autonomy in daily life. As f

Borderline personality features among individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P): A brief report.

AIM: This exploratory study reports on borderline symptomatology within a sample of individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P) through a validated, self-report instrument, the short version of the Borderline Symptom List (BSL-23). METHODS: The sample consisted of 44 help-seeking CHR-P youth (ages 14-29 years) who completed an initial evaluation at a specialized clinic for psychosis-risk. RESULTS: The mean BSL-23 score was 1.5 (SD = 1.0, range 0.1-4.0). Higher scores were strongly associated with greater reported depressive symptoms (r = 0.84, p < 0.001). Additionally, borderline

Social network site addiction - an overview.

Research into frequent, excessive, and compulsive social network activity has increased the last years, in which terms such as "social network site addiction" and "Facebook addiction" have been used interchangeably. The aim of this review is to offer more knowledge and better understanding of social network site addiction (SNS-addiction) among researchers as well as clinicians by presenting a narrative overview of the research field in terms of definition, measurement, antecedents, consequences, and treatment as well as recommendations for future research efforts. Seven different measures of S

Women's collectives and social support: exploring pathways and impacts among forcibly displaced women.

BACKGROUND: During humanitarian crises, women face both heightened vulnerabilities and a disruption to their social networks. Previous research points to the positive impact of women's collectives in low-income settings, but less is known about the distinct forms, mechanisms, and consequences of the social support that emerges from these collectives, particularly for women affected by conflict. Recognizing the importance of social support in such contexts, this study utilizes the photovoice methodology to examine the dynamics of social support across women's collectives in three distinct setti
