Ventricular arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death in young Leonbergers.

INTRODUCTION: To describe unexpected sudden cardiac death (SCD) in young Leonbergers (<3 years) and to review the circumstances before death and necropsy findings; to prospectively evaluate the presence of possible arrhythmias in young Leonbergers; and to examine pedigrees for determining potential modes of inheritance. ANIMALS: Postmortem evaluations included 21 Leonbergers. Clinical evaluation consisted of 46 apparently healthy Leonbergers with and without a close family history of SCD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Necropsy reports were reviewed retrospectively. Prospective clinical evaluation i

Indications for permanent pacing in dogs and cats.

Pacemaker implantation is considered as a standard procedure for treatment of symptomatic bradycardia in both dogs and cats. Advanced second-degree and third-degree atrioventricular blocks, sick sinus syndrome, persistent atrial standstill, and vasovagal syncope are the most common rhythm disturbances that require pacing to either alleviate clinical signs or prolong survival. Most pacemakers are implanted transvenously, using endocardial leads, but rarely epicardial leads may be necessary. To decide whether a patient is a candidate for pacing, as well as which pacing modality should be used, t

Pericardial Effusion in a Dog with Pericardial Hemangiosarcoma.

An adult Jack Russel terrier dog presented for evaluation of large-volume peritoneal and pleural effusion. Echocardiography revealed scant pericardial effusion and abnormally thickened pericardium. Electrocardiography revealed complete atrioventricular block with junctional and ventricular escape beats and occasional ventricular premature complexes. Computed tomography of the thorax confirmed diffuse abnormal thickening of the pericardium, and a tentative diagnosis of constrictive-effusive pericarditis was made. The dog underwent subtotal pericardiectomy to remove the parietal pericardium and

Dilatable pulmonary artery banding for ventricular septal defect: surgical technique and case report of three cats.

Pulmonary artery banding (PAB) is a viable but underreported palliative option for hemodynamically significant ventricular septal defect in small animals. A significant challenge associated with PAB is judging the degree of band tightening, which can be further complicated when animals are immature and still growing at the time of PAB. If a pulmonary artery band is overtightened or becomes progressively too tight after surgery, the result can be reversal of shunt flow with potentially devastating consequences. Placement of a band that could be percutaneously dilated using a balloon catheter af

Comparison between the effects of torsemide and furosemide on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system of normal dogs.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that torsemide and furosemide, at approximately equipotent dosages (similar diuresis), would have comparable effects on the circulating renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six, healthy, middle-aged, male Beagles were randomized to receive torsemide (0.1 mg/kg PO q 12 h), furosemide (2.0 mg/kg PO q 12 h), or placebo for 10 days during three separate periods, separated by a 10-day washout period, in a crossover design. Blood was collected on days 1, 5, and 9 and 24-h urine collection ended on days 2, 6, and 10. After rep

Balloon valvuloplasty in a dog with congenital bicuspid aortic valve and supravalvar aortic stenosis (atypical Shone's complex).

An 8-month-old intact female pug was presented for evaluation and possible balloon valvuloplasty (BV) for severe aortic stenosis. A bicuspid, severely stenotic aortic valve of type 3 morphology with a supravalvar stenosis component was diagnosed, consistent with the diagnosis of atypical Shone's complex. There was severe concentric hypertrophy of the left ventricle, with increased echogenicity of the myocardium nearest to the endocardial border. Mild left atrial enlargement was observed. Selective angiography and transesophageal echocardiography revealed an enlarged and relatively tortuous asc

Treatment of caudal cavoatrial junction obstruction in a dog with a balloon-expandable biliary stent.

A 2-year-old intact female mixed breed dog was presented for ascites. Echocardiography demonstrated severe obstruction at the level of the caudal right atrium. Initially, a variant of cor triatriatum dexter was diagnosed, and balloon catheter dilation was performed. However, ascites recurred within a week. Further imaging revealed an obstruction at the entrance of the caudal vena cava into the right atrium rather than a dividing membrane in the right atrium. The diagnosis was revised to suprahepatic obstruction of the caudal vena cava because of remnant Eustachian valve tissue. Deployment of a

Cor triatriatum sinister in a dog.

This report describes the transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiographic features of cor triatriatum sinister in an asymptomatic 6-year-old male French bulldog. Although cor triatriatum sinister represents a well-known and widely described cardiac malformation in humans, its description in the canine population is rare. In this clinical case, non-invasive echocardiographic techniques were helpful in visualizing and characterizing the lesion, allowing a valuable assessment of the malformation, and its hemodynamic consequences.

The prevalence of pulmonary hypertension in Cavalier King Charles spaniels compared with other breeds with myxomatous mitral valve disease.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a common consequence of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). Cavalier King Charles spaniels (CKCS) are frequently affected with MMVD and appear to have different disease progression compared to other dogs. This study aimed to determine if CKCS are more likely to develop PH as a result of MMVD than dogs of other breeds. A secondary aim was to explore whether breed or PH impacted survival. ANIMALS: A total of 187 dogs diagnosed with MMVD, 94 CKCS and 93 non-CKCS, were included in this study. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of dogs with MM

Bidirectional flow across a perforate cor triatriatum dexter in a dog with concurrent pulmonary, tricuspid, and mitral valve dysplasia.

A 10-week-old male intact mixed breed dog presented for evaluation of suspected right-sided congestive heart failure. Echocardiographic imaging revealed a perforate cor triatriatum dexter (CTD), along with pulmonary valve stenosis and tricuspid and mitral valve dysplasia. In typical CTD cases, there is unidirectional blood flow across the dividing membrane, from the caudal into the cranial right atrial chambers. Owing to right-sided pressure alterations caused by the concurrent valvar defects, color Doppler imaging demonstrated bidirectional flow across the CTD membrane.

Extracardiac intrapericardial myxosarcoma causing right ventricular outflow tract obstruction in a dog.

A 13-year-old male castrated pomeranian cross was referred for evaluation of episodes of collapse and a suspected cardiac mass. The presence of a mass at the base of the heart within the pericardial space was confirmed by echocardiography. Additional diagnostics included computed tomography, ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspirate, and thoracic radiographs. The mass was surgically debulked and diagnosed as myxosarcoma via histopathology. This case report describes the diagnostic imaging, laboratory findings, and short-term positive clinical outcome of a dog with a myxosarcoma in a previously un

Pericardial effusion associated with systemic inflammatory disease in seven dogs (January 2006 - January 2012).

Pericardial effusion (PE) is reported in dogs as a consequence of neoplasia, primary cardiac disease or as an idiopathic condition. We describe seven dogs with systemic inflammatory disease, PE without tamponade and increased cardiac troponin I concentrations. Echocardiographic findings and adjunctive testing did not identify other known causes of PE. Resolution of the PE was documented in five of seven dogs in which follow-up echocardiography was performed, often after anti-inflammatory therapy. Resolution of PE was associated with normalisation of cardiac troponin I levels. Clinical signs ha

Interreader agreement of radiographic left atrial enlargement in dogs and comparison to echocardiographic left atrial assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Assessing left atrial (LA) size is an integral part of the cardiac evaluation in dogs. Left atrial size is routinely evaluated by thoracic radiographs or echocardiography. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the study were to assess agreement of subjective radiographic left atrial enlargement (LAE) between readers, to compare subjective radiographic LAE with echocardiography, and to assess the accuracy and reliability of commonly used Roentgen signs for LAE. ANIMALS: One hundred one dogs with thoracic radiographs and echocardiography performed on the same day at a veterinary teaching

Left atrial deformation and phasic function determined by two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease.

INTRODUCTION: Left atrial (LA) function can provide useful information in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). Recently, we have demonstrated the feasibility of measuring LA longitudinal deformation using speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) to estimate LA function in healthy dogs. Whether LA strain and strain rate variables provide additional information about LA function and clinical cardiac status in dogs with MMVD remains unexplored. ANIMALS: Ninety-six client-owned dogs of different breeds with MMVD were prospectively enrolled. METHODS: LA longitudinal deformation was ev

Usefulness of pulsed-wave tissue Doppler imaging at the mitral annulus for prediction of new-onset atrial fibrillation in dogs.

INTRODUCTION: The time from the onset of the P wave on electrocardiogram to the peak of late diastolic wave signal (PA-TDI interval) recorded by left atrial pulsed-wave tissue Doppler imaging (PW-TDI) is a surrogate of the total atrial conduction time, and it can predict the development of new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) in people. This study investigated whether PA-TDI interval measured with PW-TDI at the level of lateral aspect of the mitral valve annulus could identify dogs which developed AF within 6 months after echocardiography. ANIMALS: Forty-two dogs with different cardiac diseases

Low-energy ablation of anteroseptal accessory pathways in two dogs.

In humans, accessory pathways (APs) in an anteroseptal and midseptal position are often challenging to ablate because of their close proximity with the conduction pathways of the atrioventricular junction. The use of low-energy ablation techniques can be useful to reduce the risk of permanently damaging the atrioventricular node and the His bundle. This report describes the use of low-energy radiofrequency catheter ablation to successfully and permanently ablate anteroseptal APs in two dogs with orthodromic atrioventricular reciprocating tachycardia. In the first dog, a transient first degree
