BACKGROUND: Trauma patients present to the emergency department with various injuries. Few injuries can be easily missed during the evaluation of polytrauma patients. We report one such rare injury in a trauma patient. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 67-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with an alleged history of trauma. He reported severe pain in the lower abdomen, right hip, and right thigh. An x-ray study did not reveal any bony injury, and an extended focused assessment with sonography in trauma was also negative. Point-of-care ultrasound of his right thigh revea

Bone Tumors Occurring in the Soft Tissues: A Review of the Clinical, Imaging, and Histopathologic Findings.

Although rare in everyday practice, malignancies that classically arise from bone or cartilage have been reported to arise de novo in various soft tissues in the body, resulting in a diagnostic challenge for the clinician, radiologist, and pathologist. Differential diagnoses of bone tumors often depend on anatomic location of the lesion. For example, the classic location of osteosarcoma is in the metaphysis of long bones about the knee. Histologically osteosarcoma is characterized by tumor cells that directly produce osteoid, bone, or cartilaginous matrix. In extraskeletal osteosarcoma, the cl

CT of soft-tissue neoplasms.

The computed tomographic scans (CT) of 84 patients with untreated soft-tissue neoplasms were studied, 75 with primary and nine with secondary lesions. Each scan was evaluated using several criteria: homogeneity and density, presence and type of calcification, presence of bony destruction, involvement of multiple muscle groups, definition of adjacent fat, border definition, and vessel or nerve involvement. CT demonstrated the lesion in all 84 patients and showed excellent anatomic detail in 64 of the 75 patients with primary neoplasms. CT did not differentiate vessel or nerve entrapment from ne

Head-compliant microstrip split ring resonator for non-invasive healing monitoring after craniosynostosis-based surgery.

A soft and highly directive, proximity-coupled split-ring resonator fabricated with a liquid alloy, copper and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is presented. The same was designed for sensing osteogenesis of calvarial bone. As dielectric properties of bone grafts in ossifying calvarial defects should change during the osteogenesis process, devices like this could monitor the gradual transformation of the defect into bone by differentiating changes in the dielectric properties as shifts in the resonance frequency. Computational Software Technology (CST) Microwave Studio®-based simulation results on

Giant post-traumatic liponecrotic granuloma of the gluteal region: A case report with multimodality imaging findings.

Post-traumatic liponecrotic granuloma is a benign soft-tissue lesion resulting from adipose tissue necrosis after blunt trauma. Although post-traumatic fat necrosis is a recognized entity, large encapsulated lesions with a pseudotumoral appearance are rare and may closely mimic soft-tissue neoplasms, creating a diagnostic challenge. In this setting, multimodality imaging is essential for accurate lesion characterization and appropriate patient management. We report the case of a 40-year-old woman presenting with a progressively enlarging left gluteal mass that developed over 5 years following

Evaluating micro-computed tomography for investigation of the pediatric hyoid-larynx complex.

BACKGROUND: Conventional CT imaging has limitations in detecting subtle fractures or soft tissue hemorrhages of the pediatric hyoid-larynx complex due to its largely unossified, cartilaginous structure, creating a diagnostic gap in forensic investigations. OBJECTIVE: To explore the feasibility of micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced computed tomography (diceCT) as high-resolution imaging techniques for detailed forensic and developmental assessment of the pediatric hyoid-larynx complex. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five pediatric hyoid-larynx complex s

Aspergilloma Morphology on Computed Tomography Angiography and its Clinical Impact in Patients of Haemoptysis.

Amongst various manifestations of pulmonary aspergillosis, chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) is the most common. We conducted this study to identify different morphological forms of CPA, on computed tomography angiography (CTA), and to correlate these with clinical presentation, as well as, associated imaging features. The study design was cross-sectional, with a final sample size of 65 patients, recruited over a period of 2years from January 2017 to October 2018. Patients with past history of tuberculosis (TB), presenting with haemoptysis and found to have aspergilloma on computed tomogra

A new composite hemiface/mandible/tongue transplantation model in rats.

Extensive head and neck deformities, including bone and soft tissue defects, are always challenging for reconstructive surgeons. The purpose of this study was to extend the application of the face/scalp transplantation model in rats by the incorporation of vascularized mandible, masseter and tongue (based on the same vascular pedicle), and to use this as a model to test new reconstructive options for extensive head and neck deformities with involving large soft and bone tissue defects.A total of 10 composite hemiface/mandible/tongue transplantations were performed in Lewis rats (RT1). Refinement of the correction of orbital hypertelorism.

The objective of this article was to explore the effect of paraorbital soft-tissue expansion before orbital osteotomies and medial translocation by combined intracranial-extracranial approach. Tissue expansion was implanted in the zygomatic and temporal region 3 weeks before traditional operation in 2 cases of severe orbital hypertelorism. The measurements of interorbital and intercanthal distance were studied preoperatively and postoperatively by three-dimensional computed tomography. The interorbital distance of the 2 patients decreased from 4.4 and 3.2 cm to 2.0 and 1.4 cm, respectively. Th

Soft tissue aneurysmal bone cyst in a 10-year-old girl.

We report the case of a 10-year-old girl with a soft tissue aneurysmal bone cyst (STABC) located in the posterior aspect of the left shoulder. Conventional radiography revealed an oblong mass with a calcified rim. On the computed tomography scan, the lesion appeared to have a non-uniform intralesional density with an incomplete rim. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a multi-cavity lesion with fluid-fluid levels. Following pathological examination, the lesion was diagnosed as a STABC. This may be only the twentieth reported case in the English literature of this extremely rare benign tumor oc

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma: US and CT findings in three patients.

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) is a rare disorder. We examined two females and one male with multiple soft-tissue masses in the abdominal wall. One of these three patients also had soft-tissue masses in the right thigh and right buttock. The histologic diagnosis was revealed as SPTCL in all three cases. The ultrasound (US) findings in two of these cases were diffuse, ill-defined hyperechoic areas with a linear vascular signal. The findings of the abdominal and pelvic computed tomography (CT) scanning with contrast enhancement were multiple enhancing nodules with an infi
