Organic solvent-induced bipolar disorder: a case report.

Many studies have reported neurological and neuropsychiatric symptoms, including a significantly increased risk of depression and suicide, from exposure to low to moderate levels of organic solvents. However, few studies have reported a link between organic solvent exposure and bipolar disorder. The authors present a case of a 43-y-old man who developed new-onset bipolar disorder following exposure to organic solvents in a textile printing plant. The man had elevated blood levels of several common solvents. His symptoms abated following avoidance of solvent exposures at his workplace and after…

The Use of Solvent/Detergent Treatment in Pathogen Reduction of Plasma.

The solvent/detergent (SD) process used for plasma can safely inactivate all lipid-enveloped viruses. The introduction of a specific prion-binding ligand gel in combination with SD treatment, time-reduced from 4 to 1-1.5 h, still ensures efficient virus kill, reduces abnormal prion protein by >5 log steps, and preserves levels of plasmin inhibitor at close to the reference range. Infections with known non-enveloped viruses such as HAV or parvovirus B19 are prevented by ensuring low virus loads in the starting plasma units, dilution through pooling of single plasma units, and neutralization of

The Baeyer-Villiger reaction: solvent effects on reaction mechanisms.

This study focuses on the Baeyer-Villiger reaction of propanone and performic acid, with formic acid as catalyst. Continuum solvation methods (EIF-PCM and CPCM) and two density functionals (B3LYP and MPWB1K) are used to study solvent effects on two types of reaction mechanisms: concerted non-ionic and stepwise ionic. The ionic mechanism is the one found in most organic chemistry textbooks; it begins with the protonation of the ketone by the acid catalyst, even though this reaction normally takes place in non-polar solvents such as dichloromethane. Our calculations show that the concerted non-i…

The effect of drug concentration on solvent activity in silicone membranes.

The effects of supersaturated formulations on drug permeation through artificial and biological membranes have been reported by a number of research groups. However, little information is known about solvent permeation from these supersaturated formulations, and in particular the effect of high drug concentrations and degree of saturation (DS) on solvent activity. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the DS of a model drug, oxybutynin, on solvent and drug permeation. Supersaturated residues of oxybutynin in propylene glycol (PG) or (octyl salicylate) OSAL were prepared by the s

Colour vision defects in occupational chronic solvent encephalopathy.

Occupational chronic solvent encephalopathy (CSE) is associated with a number of neurobehavioural disorders including defects of visual perception. The purpose of this study was to characterize colour vision defects in CSE patients. Colour vision was tested in bright illumination with the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue test in workers who had CSE due to occupational exposure to common industrial solvents. Before assessing colour vision, the subjects' ocular health and visual functions were evaluated. On the basis of this evaluation, 36 subjects with healthy eyes were selected and their colour visi…

Bioconversion of isopropanol by a solvent tolerant Sphingobacterium mizutae strain.

The bioconversion of high concentration isopropanol (2-propanol, IPA) was investigated by a solvent tolerant strain of bacteria, which was identified as Sphingobacterium mizutae ST2 by partial 16S rDNA gene sequencing. This strain of bacteria exhibited the ability to utilise high concentration isopropanol as the sole carbon source, with mineralization occurring via an acetone intermediate into central metabolism. The biodegradative performance of this strain for IPA was examined over a 2-38 g l(-1) concentration range, using specific growth rate (mu) and conversion rate analysis. Maximum speci

Potential health effects of occupational chlorinated solvent exposure.

Based on toxicology, metabolism, animal studies, and human studies, occupational exposure to chlorinated aliphatic solvents (methanes, ethanes, and ethenes) has been associated with numerous adverse health effects, including central nervous system, reproductive, liver, and kidney toxicity, and carcinogenicity. However, many of these solvents remain in active, large-volume use. This article reviews the recent occupational epidemiology literature on the most widely used solvents, methylene chloride, chloroform, trichloroethylene, and tetrachloroethylene, and discusses other chlorinated aliphatic…

Pressurised solvent extraction for organotin speciation in vegetable matrices.

Because organotin compounds (OTC) are widely used in many fields of activity, they have become an ubiquitous environmental presence. The presence of organotins in the environment impacts upon food safety, making it important to monitor the levels of organotin pesticides in fruits and vegetables. Nevertheless, only a few studies have been published on organotin speciation in plants. The objective of the present study was to evaluate and optimise a specific procedure based on pressurised solvent extraction (PSE) that is suitable for monitoring organotin content in vegetables. In ASE, solvents ar…

Field evaluation of the solvent extraction residual biotreatment technology.

The Solvent Extraction Residual Biotreatment (SERB) technology was evaluated at a former dry cleaner site in Jacksonville, FL, where an area of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) contamination was identified. The SERB technology is a treatmenttrain approach for complete site restoration, which combines an active in situ dense nonaqueous-phase liquid (DNAPL) removal technology, cosolvent extraction, with a passive enhanced in situ bioremediation technology, reductive dechlorination. During the in situ cosolvent extraction test, approximately 34 kL of 95% ethanol/5% water (v:v) was flushed through the co

Mood and behavioral symptoms in individuals with chronic solvent exposure.

Psychiatric symptoms have been reported for individuals who experience chronic exposure to low levels of organic solvents. However, it is not known what proportion of such individuals experience psychiatric disorder; which specific disorders may be characteristic of this population; or whether bioaccumulation of lead contributes to the relationship between solvent exposure and psychiatric symptoms. Twenty-nine male journeymen painters and 32 male non-painter control subjects were administered semi-structured diagnostic interviews for DSM-III-R Axis I and Axis II disorders. Influence of solvent polarity and proticity on the photochemical properties of norfloxacin.

The fluoroquinolone antibacterial norfloxacin (NF) is a moderate photosensitizer of singlet molecular oxygen (1O2). We have studied photosen … ca four times in D2O. The quantum yield of 1O2 photogeneration was also up to five times higher in solvents that were both protic and polar than vice versa. Our data show that NF is more photochemically active in an environment that is both protic and polar. This suggests the involvement of polar excited state(s) and possible proton/hydrogen transfer duri …

Gelation of fractionated canine submaxillary mucin in a chaotropic solvent.

Rheological measurements have been performed on three molecular weight fractions of purified canine submaxillary mucin (CSM) dissolved in the chaotropic solvent 6 M guanidine hydrochloride (GdnHCI). Solutions of the lower molecular weight fractions are viscoelastic sols, and their dynamic moduli can be scaled with respect to molecular weight and concentration according to linear viscoelasticity theory. In contrast, preparations of the highest molecular weight fraction form viscoelastic gels that exhibit an equilibrium shear modulus, Ge', which scales with mucin concentration as Ge' approximate

A whiff of death: fatal volatile solvent inhalation abuse.

Inhalation abuse of volatile solvents, previously known generically as "glue sniffing," is typically pursued by adolescents. A wide range of legal, easily obtained products containing volatile substances are available for abuse. We report two illustrative cases of fatal volatile substance abuse: gasoline sniffing in a 20-year-old man and aerosol propellant gas inhalation (aerosol air freshener) in a 16-year-old girl with underlying reactive airway disease. Although the ratio of deaths to nonfatal inhalation escapades is extremely low, volatile solvent abuse carries the risk of sudden death due…
