Spatiotemporal Pattern of COVID-19-Related Mortality during the First Year of the Pandemic in Brazil: A Population-based Study in a Region of High Social Vulnerability.

Currently, the world is facing a severe pandemic caused by the new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus. Although the WHO has recommended preventive measures to limit its spread, Brazil has neglected most of these recommendations, and consequently, our country has the second largest number of deaths from COVID-19 worldwide. In addition, recent studies have shown the relationship between socioeconomic inequalities and the risk of severe COVID-19 infection. Herein, we aimed to assess the spatiotemporal distribution of mortality and lethality rates of COVID-19 in a r

The impact of climatic factors on headache patterns: a 14-year time series analysis of cluster and tension-type headaches in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Weather-related influences on pain and neurological symptoms are widely discussed in biometeorology. However, the long-term impact of climatic variables on primary care headache consultations remains unclear. This study aimed to examine whether climatic variables are associated with consultations for cluster headaches, tension-type headaches (TTH), and unspecified headaches over 14 years. METHODS: Data (2010-2023) were extracted from medical records using International Classification of Primary Care, Second Edition (ICPC-2) codes. Meteorological variables (temperature, rainfall, w

Discovering EEG biomarkers of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome through unsupervised time-frequency analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The discovery and validation of electroencephalography (EEG) biomarkers often rely on visual identification of waveforms. However, bias toward visually striking events restricts the search space for new biomarkers, and low interrater reliability can limit rigorous validation. We present a data-driven approach to biomarker discovery called scalp EEG Pattern Identification and Categorization (s-EPIC), which enables automated, unsupervised identification of EEG waveforms. S-EPIC is validated on Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), an epilepsy that is difficult to diagnose and assess due to i

Epidemiology of Hodgkin's disease.

Hodgkin's disease displays an intriguing variation in incidence with age. For adult disease, there is striking bimodality in incidence with peaks in young adulthood and in older adulthood. On epidemiologic grounds, there appear to be three different diseases: childhood (0-14 years), young adult (15-34 years), and older adult Hodgkin's disease (55+ years). There are marked geographic variations in Hodgkin's disease incidence, but the variations are different for the three age groups. There are also interesting associations between Hodgkin's disease and markers of social class. For the young adu

Virtual disease landscape using mechanics-informed machine learning: Application to esophageal disorders.

Esophageal disorders are related to the mechanical properties and function of the esophageal wall. Therefore, to understand the underlying fundamental mechanisms behind various esophageal disorders, it is crucial to map mechanical behavior of the esophageal wall in terms of mechanics-based parameters corresponding to altered bolus transit and increased intrabolus pressure. We present a hybrid framework that combines fluid mechanics and machine learning to identify the underlying physics of various esophageal disorders (motility disorders, eosinophilic esophagitis, reflux disease, scleroderma e

Modeling the spatial distribution of mosquito vectors for West Nile virus in Connecticut, USA.

The risk of transmission of West Nile virus (WNV) to humans is associated with the density of infected vector mosquitoes in a given area. Current technology for estimating vector distribution and abundance is primarily based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) light trap collections, which provide only point data. In order to estimate mosquito abundance in areas not sampled by traps, we developed logistic regression models for five mosquito species implicated as the most likely vectors of WNV in Connecticut. Using data from 32 traps in Fairfield County from 2001 to 2003, the mo

Cellular correlates of gray matter volume changes in magnetic resonance morphometry identified by two-photon microscopy.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain combined with voxel-based morphometry (VBM) revealed changes in gray matter volume (GMV) in various disorders. However, the cellular basis of GMV changes has remained largely unclear. We correlated changes in GMV with cellular metrics by imaging mice with MRI and two-photon in vivo microscopy at three time points within 12 weeks, taking advantage of age-dependent changes in brain structure. Imaging fluorescent cell nuclei allowed inferences on (i) physical tissue volume as determined from reference spaces outlined by nuclei, (ii) cell density, (iii

Analysis of PKD1 for genomic deletion by multiplex ligation-dependent probe assay: absence of hot spots.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease is largely due to mutations in PKD1. PKD1 has an unusual genomic structure, including a 2.5-kb polypyrimidine sequence in intron 21, which has been postulated to lead to a high rate of spontaneous genomic mutation events. In addition, the majority of the gene is duplicated three to six times at 97-99% identity elsewhere in the genome. To identify genomic mutations in PKD1, we developed a multiplex ligation-dependent probe assay (MLPA) in which sites of variation between PKD1 and its copies were positioned at the ligation sites of the MLPA probe sets

Prospective Spatiotemporal Cluster Detection Using SaTScan: Tutorial for Designing and Fine-Tuning a System to Detect Reportable Communicable Disease Outbreaks.

Staff at public health departments have few training materials to learn how to design and fine-tune systems to quickly detect acute, localized, community-acquired outbreaks of infectious diseases. Since 2014, the Bureau of Communicable Disease at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has analyzed reportable communicable diseases daily using SaTScan. SaTScan is a free software that analyzes data using scan statistics, which can detect increasing disease activity without a priori specification of temporal period, geographic location, or size. The Bureau of Communicable Diseas

Spatial temporal patterns in childhood leukaemia: further evidence for an infectious origin. EUROCLUS project.

The EUROCLUS project included information on residence at diagnosis for 13351 cases of childhood leukaemia diagnosed in the period 1980-89 in defined geographical regions in 17 countries. A formal algorithm permits identification of small census areas as containing case excesses. The present analysis examines spatial-temporal patterns of the cases (n = 970) within these clustered areas. The objectives were, first, to compare these results with those from an analysis conducted for UK data for the period 1966-83, and, second, to extend them to consider infant leukaemias. A modification of the Kn

Automatic Data Reduction of Image Sequences Acquired in Object Tracking Mode for Detection and Position Measurement of Faint Orbital Objects.

Precise object tracking of space objects is an image acquisition method that uses the mount of the telescope to orient the instrument in real time towards the target to be tracked, compensating for the target's motion. Using this method, the object of interest will appear as a circular or point-like shape in the acquired image, while the background stars will appear as streaks. Using precise object tracking, the light from a faint object accumulates in the same region of the image, increasing the chance of observation, but longer exposures also increase the length of the background star streak

Enhancement of LTE and NR systems through efficient physical cell identity allocation.

As mobile communication systems continue to evolve to support higher data rates, ultra-low latency, and greater reliability, the effective management of Physical Cell Identities (PCI) becomes increasingly important. The pool of available identifiers is limited-504 in fourth-generation networks and 1008 in fifth-generation networks-so reuse of these identities is unavoidable. Improper reuse can lead to collisions and confusion, resulting in interference, failed handovers, and reduced network throughput. This work addresses these challenges by exploring advanced automated techniques for optimizi

Molecular characterization of Dictyocaulus nematodes in wild red deer Cervus elaphus in two areas of the Italian Alps.

Nematodes of the genus Dictyocaulus are the causative agents of parasitic bronchitis and pneumonia in several domestic and wild ungulates. Various species have been described in wild cervids, as the case of Dictyocaulus cervi in red deer, recently described as a separate species from Dictyocaulus eckerti. In Italy, information on dictyocaulosis in wildlife is limited and often outdated. In this work, 250 red deer were examined for the presence of Dictyocaulus spp. in two areas of the Italian Alps (n = 104 from Valle d'Aosta, n = 146 from Stelvio National Park), and the retrieved lungworms were

Identifying hotspots of malaria incidence and mortality for tailored interventions in Cameroon using routine data from 2011 to 2021: A Bayesian space-time variability modeling.

Malaria remains a health challenge globally, particularly in Cameroon. Despite the emphasis of recent studies to provide estimates of spatio-temporal variations in malaria in the country, these studies have overlooked an important aspect of disease surveillance, which is the monitoring and assessing of spatio-temporal risk in hotspots. This study addresses this gap by examining the ex-ante dynamics of malaria risk clustering. It identifies health districts in Cameroon with a high potential to be hotspots based on uncomplicated incidence, severe incidence, and deaths. The authors used the malar

MLS-based recognition and parameter extraction of roadway roof bolts/cables from 3D point clouds.

The installation quality and long-term stability of roadway roof bolts/cables are critical to the safety of deep coal mines, yet conventional manual inspections are time-consuming, subjective, and difficult to perform frequently. This paper presents a mobile laser scanning (MLS)-based method for automatic recognition and parameter extraction of roof bolts/cables from 3D point clouds. A SLAM-based MLS system is first used to obtain a continuous 3D model of the roadway. The roof is then globally aligned and separated from surrounding objects using a cloth simulation filter (CSF), which yields ca
