BACKGROUND: The detection of Fe3+ and Cu2+ in biological fluids is crucial for clinical diagnostics, yet remains challenging due to severe matrix interference in complex environments like serum. Current methods often lack real-time capability and struggle with selectivity, while fluorescent probes are frequently compromised by unpredictable biomolecular interactions. There is a pressing need for robust sensors that can overcome these physiological barriers. This study addresses this gap by developing a dual-functional probe designed to maintain reliable performance within biological systems, e

The few commercially available chemosensors and published probes for in vitro Zn2+ detection in two-photon microscopy are compromised by their flawed spectroscopic properties, causing issues in selectivity or challenging multistep syntheses. Herein, we present the development of an effective small molecular GFP chromophore-based fluorescent chemosensor with a 2,2'-bipyridine chelator moiety (GFZnP BIPY) for Zn2+ detection that has straightforward synthesis and uncompromised properties. Detailed experimental characterizations of the free and the zinc-bound compounds within the physiologically r

A new "OFF-ON" coumarin-based fluorescent probe for H2S detection was designed and successfully developed through O-sulfonylation between a dabsyl quencher and 7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin as a fluorescent reporter, based on a FRET approach. This H2S responsive probe, utilizing H2S assisted thiolysis of a sulfonate ester as the sensing strategy, demonstrated excellent performance towards H2S with a limit of detection (LoD) of 1.64 µM, along with superb selectivity, good stability and high specificity towards H2S without interference from other biomarkers and analytes. Moreover, dabsyl-7-hydroxy-

The inappropriate application of aminoglycoside antibiotics (AGs) in food products has led to the accumulation of AG residues in the human body. In this study, a novel fluorescent sensor based on mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA)-modified CdTe quantum dots (QDs) were designed for the rapid visual detection of a representative AG, neomycin (NEO). The proposed sensor showed excellent performance toward NEO determination, with a detection limit of 1.60 × 10-8 mol/L. Furthermore, MSA-CdTe QDs can be applied to the visual detection of NEO, where the fluorescence changes from bright yellow to dark red wit

Silver ions, as a commonly used industrial heavy metal, tends to deposit in the body and induce many diseases. In this work, modified CdTe QDs with green and red emission were synthesized to assemble dual-QDs, which could be efficient and selective utilized for Ag+ determination through the electron transfer progress between surface functional group of dual-QDs and Ag+, and the aggregation of Ag+ on the surface of dual-QDs. Under the appropriate pH value and volume ratio, the interaction between the surface functional groups of assembled dual-QDs reduce the affinity of Hg2+ in this system. The

A novel fluorescent probe for H2S was developed based on a far-red emitting indole-BODIPY, which was decorated with morpholine and 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonyl (DNBS) group. This probe showed rapid response (t1/2=3min), high selectivity and sensitivity for H2S with significant colorimetric and fluorescence OFF-ON signals, which was triggered by cleavage of 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonyl group. This probe could quantitatively detect the concentrations of H2S ranging from 0 to 60μM, and the detection of limit was found to be as low as 26nM. Cell imaging results indicated that the probe could detect an

BACKGROUND: Glyphosate (GLY) residues are difficult to remove from agricultural products and pose potential risks to food safety, making their sensitive detection highly desirable. In this study, a Cu2+-mediated ratiometric fluorescence sensing platform was constructed for the sensitive detection of GLY by physically mixing polydopamine-polyethyleneimine copolymer dots (PDA-PEI CPDs) with terephthalic acid (PTA) based on a competitive coordination strategy.
RESULTS: Cu2+ coordinated with the amino groups on the surface of CPDs and the carboxyl groups of PTA to form a CPDs-PTA-Cu2+ complex. Th

Carbon dots (CDs) have been broadly employed in many fields due to their excellent fluorescence property, especially in pharmaceutical analysis. Herein, we developed a simple and rapid method to prepare the phosphorus-nitrogen (P, N) co-doped carbon dots via a 3-minute 50-second microwave-assisted synthesis, using N-butyldiethanolamine as the carbon source with phosphoric acid accelerating the CDs formation reaction. The prepared CDs (termed CD1) were characterized by TEM, FT-IR, XPS, XRD and fluorescence spectroscopy. P, N co-doped CDs exhibited notable water solubility, a quantum yield of 19

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is extensively utilized as a food preservative, yet excessive intake poses risks to human health. To achieve accurate, rapid, and on-site visual detection of sulfite, in this study, we designed and synthesized a water-soluble near-infrared fluorescent probe LCMQ by integrating rhodamine with quinolinium. LCMQ specifically reacts with SO2 through a 1,4-Michael addition, resulting in a high-contrast NIR fluorescence turn-on response accompanied by a distinct color change from purple to blue. LCMQ exhibits excellent water solubility, rapid response (<5 s), high sensitivity, a

A new colorimetric and fluorescent receptor 1 for the detection of CN(-) has been simply developed. Receptor 1 showed selectively colorimetric and fluorometric responses to CN(-) in a near-perfect aqueous solution, respectively. This sensor displayed an obvious color change from yellow to colorless upon selective binding with CN(-). In addition, it could function as an "OFF-ON type" fluorescent response through a nucleophilic addition mechanism. The binding mode of receptor 1 with CN(-) was proposed to be 1:1, based on Job plot, (1)H NMR titration and ESI-mass spectrometry analysis. Moreover,

Curcumin exhibits broad biological activity, including anticancer effects, but its therapeutic potential is limited because of poor stability, rapid metabolism, and nonspecific activity, prompting the development of structurally modified analogs with improved drug-like properties. However, how such modifications influence intracellular metabolism and subcellular behavior remains insufficiently understood. In this study, the intracellular fate of the reference molecule curcumin and 3 promising curcumin-based benzothiazepine analogs with enhanced selective anticancer activity was investigated in

The physico-chemical properties of two anti-asthmatic drugs, salmeterol xinafoate and fluticasone propionate, have been studied in both aqueous and non-aqueous solvent environments. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) have been used to characterise the interaction of the drugs in 70:30 (v/v) methanol/water solutions. First derivative UV-Vis spectra measurements indicate that an interaction takes place between the two drugs in a binary solvent system. Fluorescence studies indicate that an increase in the con

In nine members of polyglutamine (polyQ) diseases, CAG repeat expansions of their responsible genes are observed. The disease is considered to be caused by the formation of polyQ aggregates that sequester proteins essential for cell viability. To understand the pathological process of polyQ diseases, a proteomic approach was used to identify aggregate interacting proteins (AIPs). Constructs were designed to express EGFP-fused, CAG-expanded (150 Q) huntingtin exon1 under the control of an ecdysone-inducible promoter and either lacking or containing a nuclear localization signal (NLS). A major challenge in the "bottom-up" solvothermal synthesis of carbon dots (CDs) is the removal of small-molecule byproducts, noncarbonized polyamides, or other impurities that confound the optical properties. In previously reported benzene diamine-based CDs, the observed fluorescence signal already has been shown to arise from free small molecules, not from nanosized carbonized dots. Here we have unambiguously identified the small-molecule species in the synthesis of CDs starting with several isomers of benzene diamine by directly matching their NMR, mass spectrometry, and optical data with c

In this study, a kind of red-emitting carbon dots (R-CDs) was synthesized by solvothermal treatment of terephthalic acid (TPA) and 5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline (Aphen) as precursors in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF). Comprehensive characterizations demonstrated that the R-CDs were uniform spheres with an average diameter of 2.56 nm and exhibited red fluorescence at 615 nm under 555-nm excitation. The R-CDs could form non-fluorescent ground-state aggregates with Cu2+, resulting in an increase in the average particle size to 3.70 nm. The aggregation also caused a significant fluorescence quenching

Three novel Schiff base chemosensors (HZ-1, HZ-2, and HZ-3) were synthesized by condensing 4-hydroxy-[1,1'-biphenyl]-3-carbaldehyde with distinct hydrazine derivatives: (Z)-(anthracen-9-ylmethylene)hydrazine, (Z)-(pyren-1-ylmethylene)hydrazine, and (Z)-4-(hydrazonomethyl)-N,N-diphenylaniline. Structural variation was confined to the hydrazine moiety, enabling a systematic investigation of its influence on photophysical and sensing properties. UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence studies revealed marked differences in optical behavior, with HZ-1 and HZ-3 chemosensors showing significant fluoresce

Homocysteine and methylmalonic acid are important biomarkers for diseases associated with an impaired central nervous system (CNS). A new chemoassay utilizing coumarin-based fluorescent probe 1 to detect the levels of homocysteine is successfully implemented using Parkinson's disease (PD) patients' blood serum. In addition, a rapid identification of homocysteine and methylmalonic acid levels in blood serum of PD patients was also performed using the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The results obtained from both analyses were in agreement. The new chemoassay utilizing coumarin-

A rapid strategy for the β-glycosidase (β-Gal) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) sensing is presented, which is based on selective recognition reactions of QDs using visualization/fluorescence (FL)/atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS)/inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) multimode assay. CdTe QDs can selectively recognize Ag+ and Ag NPs with a cation exchange reaction (CER) where Ag+ triggers the release of Cd2+ and quenches the fluorescence signal of QDs. Taking advantage of the fact that β-Gal can hydrolyze 4-Aminophenyl β-D-galactopyranoside (PAPG) to produce p-aminophenol (

The relative transparency of Daphnia magna (daphnia) and the unique optical properties of quantum dots (QDs) were paired to study the accumulation potential and surface coating effects on uptake of amphiphilic polymer coated CdSe/ZnS QDs. Fluorescence confocal laser scanning microscopy was used to visualize and spectrally distinguish QDs from competing autofluorescent signals arising from the daphnia themselves and their food sources. QDs were found to accumulate within the digestive tracts of daphnia, as well as, in some cases, adhere to the carapace, antennae, and thoracic appendages. After
