Solvent extraction, sonication, and microwave-assisted extractions in the presence of extraction agents (thioacetic acid, citric acid, cysteine, 2-mercaptoethanol, HCl + NaCl, etc.) were tested for the isolation of mercury species. A mixture of 6 M HCl and 0.1 M NaCl was selected as the most suitable extraction agent. A retrospective study of necropsy reports was undertaken to assess the relation between liver copper concentration and age, sex, and production class for calves that did not have a history compatible with copper toxicosis or with copper deficiency. Results of a generalized least squares regression analysis of 601 records found that copper concentration was as much as 60 mg/kg wet weight higher for dairy calves than for beef calves (P < 0.00001, R2 = 0.172). The mobility and speciation of Pt was investigated in dust deposited in highway tunnels and in gully sediments. For this, a sequential extraction technique was used in combination with a microwave digestion procedure, followed by detection of Pt with high resolution ICP-MS. A simple technique is described for the rapid determination of methylmercury in fish tissue. Following simple dissolution in methanolic KOH solution, aqueous phase ethylation by derivatization with NaB(C2H5)4, cryogenic trapping on a packed chromatographic column, and GC separation, volatile mercury species are detected by atomic absorption spectrometry. Absolute detection limits are 4 pg of Hg for CH3Hg+ and 75 pg of Hg for labile Hg2+. Two hours after suicidal ingestion of an unknown amount of selenium dioxide, a 17-year-old male was admitted to hospital with asystolia and apnea. Attempts at resuscitation failed and the patient was pronounced dead. Findings at autopsy included congestion of lungs and kidneys, diffuse swelling of the heart, and brain edema. The most impressive finding was an orange-brown discoloration of the skin and all viscera, probably due to hemolysis and/or pigmentation related to ingestion of selenium dioxide. Selenium blood and tissue levels were increased by a factor of 100-1000 as compared to normal.
