Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation For The Treatment of Chronic Tinnitus: A Preliminary Study of The Influence of Traumatic Brain Injury on Treatment Response.

This study aims to test whether the efficacy of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) differs between patients who developed tinnitus following a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and those without a history of TBI. This was a parallel pilot, open-label, non-randomized, clinical trial to compare the efficacy of low frequency rTMS on tinnitus symptoms in patients with and without a TBI history. Patients with moderate to severe tinnitus symptoms based on the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) and the Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI) were enrolled in the study. Validated questionnaires (T

Population coding of time-varying sounds in the nonlemniscal inferior colliculus.

The inferior colliculus (IC) of the midbrain is important for complex sound processing, such as discriminating conspecific vocalizations and human speech. The IC's nonlemniscal, dorsal "shell" region is likely important for this process, as neurons in these layers project to higher-order thalamic nuclei that subsequently funnel acoustic signals to the amygdala and nonprimary auditory cortices, forebrain circuits important for vocalization coding in a variety of mammals, including humans. However, the extent to which shell IC neurons transmit acoustic features necessary to discern vocalizations

Congenital amusia in speakers of a tone language: association with lexical tone agnosia.

Congenital amusia is a neurogenetic disorder that affects the processing of musical pitch in speakers of non-tonal languages like English and French. We assessed whether this musical disorder exists among speakers of Mandarin Chinese who use pitch to alter the meaning of words. Using the Montreal Battery of Evaluation of Amusia, we tested 117 healthy young Mandarin speakers with no self-declared musical problems and 22 individuals who reported musical difficulties and scored two standard deviations below the mean obtained by the Mandarin speakers without amusia. These 22 amusic individuals sho

Early post-laser stapedotomy hearing thresholds.

OBJECTIVE: Auditory testing is not routinely performed within 4-6 weeks after stapedotomy, because hearing acuity is thought to be transiently depressed. In rare circumstances, postsurgical auditory and vestibular complaints may lead one to test hearing soon after stapedotomy. The early postoperative effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) and potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) lasers, which now are routinely used to perform stapedotomies, have not been reported. The purpose of this report is to present normative data for auditory thresholds measured within 2 weeks of laser stapedotomy. STUDY DESIGN:

Sensory impairments and mortality in an elderly community population: a six-year follow-up study.

Previous studies have shown that sensory impairments adversely affect the quality of life of elderly people, but have failed to demonstrate consistent results on mortality. We examined the predictive value of hearing and visual impairments on mortality in an urban population of 1140 non-institutionalized elderly subjects, aged 70-75 years. Baseline information was collected in 1986 through a door-to-door interview with a standardized questionnaire and the sensory assessment was performed using bedside tasks: the whispered voice test for hearing and the Snellen chart for vision. Overall mortali

A case of pure word deafness associated with Landau-Kleffner syndrome: a long-term study of auditory disturbance.

A long-term study of auditory disturbance of a female case who had suffered from pure word deafness associated with Landau-Kleffner syndrome was reported. The patient developed this syndrome at age 4, and we continued the follow-up until she reached 20. The following became clear after the investigation: (1) even by the age of 20 her auditory defect had not improved significantly; (2) from an early stage she could not identify either vowels or consonant-vowel syllables; (3) later she had no difficulty identifying vowels, but her consonant-discrimination score hardly improved; and (4) her probl

Visual and verbal metaphors: developmental interactions.

This study investigated developmental changes in children's abilities to comprehend visual metaphors as measured by their use of verbal metaphor. The visual metaphors were compound objects, e.g., a top with features of a ballerina (head and skirt). 30 participants at each of 4 ages--5, 7, 10, and adult--described objects ordered in pairs; half described standard objects and the other half corresponding compound objects (half stationary, and half moving, e.g., spinning). Total metaphoric descriptions reached the adult frequency by age 7 for compound objects, but increased from 5 to 10 to adult

Face processing and name retrieval in an anomic aphasic: names are stored separately from semantic information about familiar people.

Recent models of face recognition have proposed that the names of familiar people are accessed from a lexical memory store that is distinct from the semantic memory store that holds information about such things as a familiar person's occupation and personality. Names are nevertheless retrieved via the semantic system. If such models are correct, then it should be possible for a patient to have full access to semantic information about familiar people while being unable to name many of them. We report this pattern in an anomic aphasic patient, EST, whose inability to recall the names of famili

Towards a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) for Improving Phonological Processing in Developmental Dyslexia: An Exploratory Study.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have immense potential regarding the provision of therapies for disorders of development, but to date have typically been created for non-linguistic disorders such as ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Here, we present a BCI designed to improve linguistic phonological processing during natural speech listening, aimed at participants with developmental dyslexia. Phonological 'deficits' are considered a core feature of dyslexia across languages and are present from infancy in those later diagnosed with dyslexia. Here, a non-invasive EEG-BCI relying

Cochlear implants in single-sided deaf recipients: Near normal higher-order processing.

OBJECTIVE: Single-sided deafness (SSD) is a condition where an individual has a severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in one ear and normal hearing on the contralateral side. The use of cochlear implants in individuals with SSD leads to functional improvements in hearing. However, it is relatively unclear how sounds incoming via the cochlear implant (independent of the hearing ear) are processed and interpreted by higher-order processes in the brain. METHODS: Scalp electroencephalography and auditory event-related potentials were recorded monaurally from nine experienced single sided

How effective is therapy for childhood stuttering? Dissecting and reinterpreting the evidence in light of spontaneous recovery rates.

BACKGROUND: Similar positive results (e.g. immediate decreases in stuttering frequency and a 60-80% recovery rate from stuttering) have been reported for numerous therapeutic protocols for treating childhood stuttering, many of which have been diametrically opposite in their orientations and implementations. For example, Johnson advocated indirect treatments that simply advocated refraining from drawing any negative attention to childhood disfluencies as persistent and chronic stuttering was thought to progress via negative parental reactions to normal disfluencies. In contrast, direct interve

Benchmarking speech biomarkers of Alzheimer's against cognitive and neural measures.

INTRODUCTION: Digital speech biomarkers (DSBs) support the detection and monitoring of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Latinos. However, they have not been benchmarked against standard cognitive and neuroimaging measures, missing a critical validation milestone. METHODS: Thirty-three AD patients and 33 healthy controls completed verbal fluency tasks, episodic memory and executive tests, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (volume) and functional MRI (fMRI) (connectivity) scans. Between-group machine learning classification was compared among fluency-derived DSBs, episodic and executive test scor

CharMark: A Markov Approach to Linguistic Biomarkers in Dementia.

Dementia, one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases, affects millions worldwide. Understanding linguistic markers of dementia is crucial for elucidating how cognitive decline manifests in speech patterns. Current non-invasive assessments like the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Saint Louis University Mental Status (SLUMS) tests rely on manual interpretation and often lack detailed linguistic insight. This paper introduces a first-of-its-kind interpretable artificial intelligence (IAI) framework, CharMark, which leverages first-order Markov Chain models to characterize langu

Frequency Fitting Optimization Using Evolutionary Algorithm in Cochlear Implant Users with Bimodal Binaural Hearing.

UNLABELLED: Optimizing hearing in patients with a unilateral cochlear implant (CI) and contralateral acoustic hearing is a challenge. Evolutionary algorithms (EA) can explore a large set of potential solutions in a stochastic manner to approach the optimum of a minimization problem. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate an EA-based protocol to modify the default frequency settings of a MAP (fMAP) of the CI in patients with bimodal hearing. METHODS: This monocentric prospective study included 27 adult CI users (with post-lingual deafness and contralateral functional hearing).

Application of the Vibrant Soundbridge to unilateral osseous atresia cases.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Patients with high-grade atresia-microtia suffer from a combined malformation of the outer and middle ears, typically leading to a severe hearing impairment. Long-term results of middle ear reconstruction with tympanoplasty are often insufficient due to persistent air-bone gaps, and new techniques in hearing rehabilitation are required. The objective of this research is to evaluate the active middle ear implant, the Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB), for hearing rehabilitation of patients with unilateral osseous aural atresia. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective analysis of a consecutive

Correlation of hearing loss and radiologic dimensions of vestibular schwannomas (acoustic Neuromas).

A retrospective analysis was performed of puretone audiograms, speech-discrimination scores, and gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging scans of 75 patients with vestibular schwannomas (acoustic neuroma). Sensorineural hearing loss was analyzed for low frequencies (250-500 Hz), midfrequencies (1,000-2,000 Hz), and high frequencies (4,000-8,000 Hz). The largest tumor diameter in the cerebellopontine angle and the lateral extent of invasion by tumor into the internal auditory canal were calculated from magnetic resonance images. There were statistically significant correlations between t

Normal hearing in acoustic neuroma patients: a critical evaluation.

A series of 128 acoustic neuromas (ANs) managed in our center in the last 6 years were evaluated. Sixteen cases (12.5%) were found to have normal pure tone audiograms. A comparatively younger age was an important characteristic of these patients. Tinnitus, dysequilibrium, and subjective hearing loss or distortion were their most common complaints. Pure tone audiometry showed a mean pure tone average of 14.5 dB. Speech discrimination score and performance intensity phonetically balanced index were very insensitive and showed very high false-negative results. Auditory brainstem responses proved
