Given the overlap in specialties performing secondary correction of velopharyngeal incompetence (VPI), the present study investigated the specialty distribution for surgical providers of cleft care from 2004 to 2021. Data were obtained from 45 hospitals from 2004 to 2021 through the Pediatric Health Information System database. Cases of secondary surgical management of VPI were retrieved, identifying the year of surgery and specialty of the providing surgeon. A total of 7090 procedures were included in this study, of which 36.0% were secondary palatoplasty/lengthening, 34.1% were sphincter pha

BACKGROUND: Early identification of mental disorder symptoms is crucial for timely treatment and reduction of recurring symptoms and disabilities. A tool to help individuals recognize warning signs is important. We posit that such a tool would have to rely on longitudinal analysis of patterns and trends in the individual's daily activities and mood, which can now be captured through data from wearable activity trackers, speech recordings from mobile devices, and the individual's own description of their mental state. In this paper, we describe such a tool developed by our team to detect early

BACKGROUND: School-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play a critical role in minimizing the negative educational impact of their students' speech sound disorders (SSDs). Current studies on SSDs in children are rich with discussions of therapy- and child-level contributions to gains in speech sound production. However, while many studies have supported using curricular content during language interventions, there is little theoretical and no empirical evidence to demonstrate that using academically integrated therapy materials during intervention provides a positive educational impact f

BACKGROUND: Group treatments and interdisciplinary collaboration are recommended in evidence-based guidelines for neurorehabilitation, including physical and speech-language therapy. Evidence suggests that activating overlapping neural networks for upper extremity motor control and speech-language processing produces synergistic effects during therapy. This systematic review aims to overview and appraise the efficacy of group treatments in traditional rehabilitation and telerehabilitation. In addition to summarizing evidence on monodisciplinary approaches in physical and speech-language therap

AIM: Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) affect oral functions and influence craniofacial development, contributing to skeletal and dental malocclusions. The collaboration between orthodontists and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) is crucial for early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic competence of orthodontic residents in identifying OMDs, and to determine whether the application of a standardised interdisciplinary orofacial assessment protocol enhances diagnostic accuracy and interprofessional consistency.
METHODS: Twenty-nine postgrad

PURPOSE: Speech-language pathologists support children with paediatric feeding disorder and their families. However, international research highlights challenges, including inadequate training. While some Australian parents perceive speech-language pathologists as having limited knowledge and interest in paediatric feeding disorder, no studies have explored speech-language pathologists' experiences in this context.
METHOD: This study examined the perspectives of 11 experienced speech-language pathologists working in a community setting in one Australian city. Semi-structured interviews were c

BACKGROUND: Spoken discourse is elicited as part of speech-language pathology (SLP) practice after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Research literature reports on a range of monologic tasks for eliciting discourse samples, including different visual stimuli. The preferences of SLPs for these materials has not previously been investigated.
AIMS: To explore the practice and views of SLPs on available visual discourse elicitation stimuli, specifically the clinical utility and acceptability of these tasks, and alignment with materials reported in research studies. We also sought SLPs' perspectives o

PURPOSE: Phonologically complex targets (e.g., [pl-]) are understood to facilitate widespread gains following speech sound intervention, and yet, available research largely features word-initial clusters. The present study investigates intervention effects following treatment of complex clusters presented in word-final position. Importantly, this allows for an added layer of complexity via suffixes that mark tense and agreement.
METHOD: Eight English-speaking children with speech sound disorder (SSD; 3;3-6;9 [years;months]) participated in 18 one-on-one intervention sessions. Intervention was

PURPOSE: Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a multifaceted disorder. Recently, interest has grown in prosodic aspects of DLD, but most investigations of possible prosodic causes focus on speech perception tasks. Here, we focus on speech production from a speech amplitude envelope (AE) perspective. Perceptual studies have indicated a role for difficulties in AE processing in DLD related to sensory/neural processing of prosody. We explore possible matching AE difficulties in production.
METHOD: Fifty-seven children with and without DLD completed a computerized imitation task, copying alou

The purpose of this study was to investigate if multiple oppositions intervention (MOI) generated widespread change in the phonological systems of two children with cleft lip and palate (CLP) and severe speech sound disorders (SSD). We treated two children (ages 5;4 and 5;6) with CLP and severe SSD using MOI for 24 and 29 sessions. We measured the percentage consonants correct (PCC) for target consonants and untreated consonants in non-treatment single words, as well as PCC for connected speech. Data points were collected in the baseline, intervention, and maintenance phase with post-tests con

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that pre-school children with co-occurring phonological speech sound disorder (SSD) and expressive language difficulties are at a higher risk of ongoing communication and literacy needs in comparison with children with these difficulties in isolation. However, to date there has been no systematic or scoping review of the literature specific to interventions for children with this dual profile.
AIMS: To explore the evidence regarding interventions for pre-school children with co-occurring phonological SSD and expressive language difficulties, including the

Therapeutic applications of singing (e.g., melodic intonation therapy) for acquired neurogenic communication disorders (ANCD) such as post-stroke aphasia, dysarthria, or neurodegenerative diseases have emerged from innovations by clinical speech-language pathologists (SLPs). However, these specialists have never been systematically consulted about the use of singing in their practices. We report a survey of 395 SLPs in France using an online questionnaire (September 2018-January 2019). Most (98%) knew that singing could be a therapeutic tool. A wide variety of uses emerged in our data. Some pr

INTRODUCTION: The brainstem auditory evoked potential with speech stimulus, BAEP-speech, has been applied to observe how speech sounds are manifested in the brainstem. This tool can be used in children to assess central auditory processing, allowing preventive and early interventions.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the results found in the brainstem auditory evoked potential with speech stimulus in the pediatric population with and without oral language disorders, through a systematic literature review.
METHOD: The search was carried out in the scientific databases Portal BVS, Pubmed, Lilacs, Medline,

Although research indicates that anxious arousal in response to feared stimuli is related to treatment outcome (Heimberg et al., 1990), less is known about the patterns of anxious arousal. We identified patterns of anxious arousal in individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) at pre- (n= 61) and posttreatment (n= 40; 12-session CBGT, Heimberg & Becker, 2002), and in non-anxious controls (NACs; n= 31) using an assessment speech task administered at pretreatment (SAD) or the pretreatment equivalent (NACs), as well as at posttreatment (SAD only). We identified nine patterns of anxious arousal

PURPOSE: To evaluate phenotypic expressions of speech sound disorder (SSD) in multigenerational families with evidence of familial forms of SSD. METHOD: Members of five multigenerational families (N = 36) produced rapid sequences of monosyllables and disyllables and tapped computer keys with repetitive and alternating movements. RESULTS: Measures of repetitive and alternating motor speed were correlated within and between the two motor systems. Repetitive and alternating motor speeds increased in children and decreased in adults as a function of age. In two families with children who had sever

BACKGROUND: Speech sound disorders (SSD) may compromise speech intelligibility in children and adolescents, impacting communication, social interactions and academic performance. Ultrasound visual biofeedback (U-VBF) has emerged as a promising tool for articulation therapy, providing real-time tongue movement visualization, yet its evidence base requires updating given methodological advancements.
AIMS: This systematic review and meta-analysis updates the evidence for the effectiveness of the use of U-VBF in improving articulation accuracy for paediatric SSD, synthesizing recent studies with

BACKGROUND: Children born with cleft palate ± lip (CP ± L) are at risk of speech sound disorder (SSD). Up to 40% continue to have SSD at age 5-6 years. These difficulties are typically described as articulatory in nature and often include cleft speech characteristics (CSC) hypothesized to result from structural differences. In non-CP ± L SSD comorbidity with language difficulties is often reported. There is growing evidence of concomitant language difficulties in children with CP ± L and of a higher prevalence of developmental speech errors in children compared with non-CP ± L peers. The impac

Herein we described a retrospective analysis of a 13-year-old female patient with facial dysmorphia and immune disorder caused by BCL11B gene mutation. The patient upon physical examination presented a particular face (thin eyebrows, small mandible, and widened eye distance), delayed language and motor development. Supplementary examination showed expansion of CD8+, absence of type 2 Innate Lymphoid Cells, increased IgG and altered distribution of T cells. Genetic testing revealed a heterozygous frameshift variation in exon 4 of the BCL11B gene; c.1887_c.1893delCGGCGGG (p.Gly630Glyfs*91). Fina
