Stomatal pores in land plants rapidly and reversibly open and close in response to diurnal changes in leaf carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration. Studies have suggested that CO2 is sensed by guard cells with relevant amplifying contributions from mesophyll tissue. CO2 concentration changes trigger rapid signal transduction events involving protein phosphorylation in guard cells. Moreover, molecular crosstalk and physiological interactions of the stomatal CO2 response with other environmental conditions and stimuli, including light, temperature, drought, and abscisic acid, are reviewed here. Calcium-dependent protein kinases (CPKs) play crucial roles in plant guard cell signal transduction. Ethylene is known to induce stomatal closure, with the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-nitric oxide (NO) signalling module being pivotal to this process. However, the specific roles of CPKs in this process and their interactions with H2O2 and NO remain unclear. In this study, we screened Arabidopsis mutants of nine CPKs and found that in the loss-of-function mutants for CPK3, CPK4, CPK6, CPK11, CPK21, and CPK33, exogenous ethylene failed to induce stomatal closure, indicating that these CPKs act as po

BACKGROUND: Aphthous stomatitis is one of the most common oral mucosal diseases. Due to the commonness of recurrent aphthous stomatitis and considering the anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and tissue regenerative properties of atorvastatin and the lack of a study on the effect of statins on minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis, this study investigates the effect of atorvastatin mucoadhesive tablets as a topical treatment on reduction of symptoms and duration of this disease.
METHODS: This study is a randomized, double-blinded clinical trial. Patients were divided into two groups, atorvastatin and…

Immune-mediated and autoimmune diseases of the skin often present with oral cavity involvement. Autoimmune subepidermal blistering diseases and pemphigus vulgaris are classic examples. While the primary lesions (vesicles and bullae) are relatively specific, these fragile lesions evolve rapidly into erosions and ulcers, which are lesion types that overlap with many diseases. Furthermore, some immune-mediated diseases such as severe adverse drug reactions, lupus diseases, canine uveodermatological syndrome, and vasculitis, may or may not involve the oral cavity, and often nonoral clinical manife

OBJECTIVE: The pathogenesis of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is related to an increase of pro-inflammatory cytokine, namely tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α). This cytokine plays an important role in the development of ulcer lesions, both in saliva, tissues and blood. This systematic review analyzed the differences of TNF-α in lesions, salivary and blood and can be used as a reliable method of diagnosis for RAS.
METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus databases, Web of Science, Scielo, Google Scholar and Embase with keywords. The inclusion criteria were studies that assessed the…

DO3SE (Deposition of Ozone for Stomatal Exchange), is a dry deposition model, designed to assess tropospheric ozone risk to vegetation, and is based on two alternative algorithms to estimate stomatal conductance: multiplicative and photosynthetic. The multiplicative model has been argued to perform better for leaf-level and regional-level application. In this study, we demonstrate that the photosynthetic model is superior to the multiplicative model even for leaf-level studies using measurements performed on Mangifera indica. We find that the multiplicative model overestimates the daytime stom

Celiac disease is the most common chronic gastroenterological disease. One of the extraintestinal manifestations of this multifaceted disease are changes in the oral mucosa. However, ulceration leading to the destruction of the soft and hard tissues of the orofacial region has not been reported so far. We report on the development of necrotizing ulcerative stomatitis in a 41-year-old woman with celiac disease. The initial ulcerative lesion was located in the lower lip mucosa. Necrosis of all layers of the left side of the lip and oral commissure progressed very quickly. The resulting defect re…

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a chronic disorder of unknown etiology characterized by recurring ulcers involving the oral mucosa in patients with no other manifestations. It is a common cause of oral ulcers in children. In its major form, RAS can be a severe and disabling disorder due to pain and scarring, and poses a therapeutic challenge. Therapies for major RAS include prednisone, thalidomide, colchicine, and dapsone. However, many patients do not achieve adequate control of the disease with them (J Clin Diagn Res, 10, 2016 and ZE08). We report a case of severe RAS in a teenager wi…

Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) matrix (M) protein mutants have been studied as oncolytic agents due to their capacity to effectively kill cancer cells while exhibiting low virulence in vivo. Despite encouraging results, many cancer cells maintain resistance to oncolytic VSV mutants in part due to residual antiviral responses. We sought to determine whether combination of VSV with natural agents with anti-tumor properties, such as curcumin, resveratrol, and flavokavain B, would enhance tumor cell killing in a prostate cancer model. Our results revealed that pretreatment with curcumin potentia…

INTRODUCTION: Oral yeasts are an important component of the resident microbial ecology of the oral cavity, but they are also associated with various forms of oral candidosis, such as denture stomatitis. Although Candida albicans is the predominant oral fungal pathogen, other species may also play an integral role in pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to examine the mycological ecology in patients with denture stomatitis, using an improved sampling technique, to determine whether species diversity and species quantity were related to oral pathology.
METHODS: Thirty-seven patients attendin…
