The superior colliculus is a major brain stem structure for the production of saccadic eye movements. Electrical stimulation at any given point in the motor map generates saccades of defined amplitude and direction. It is unknown how this saccade map is affected by strabismus. Three macaques were raised with exotropia, an outwards ocular deviation, by detaching the medial rectus tendon in each eye at age 1 mo. The animals were able to make saccades to targets with either eye and appeared to alternate fixation freely. To probe the organization of the superior colliculus, microstimulation was ap…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To investigate the correlation between strabismus and the severity of white matter damage of immaturity (WMDI), based on MRI findings. Although strabismus is commonly associated with WMDI, its clinical features are not well established.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 73 consecutive patients who visited the department of ophthalmology and were diagnosed with WMDI. The severity of WMDI was graded based on the MRI findings of the patients. All of the patients underwent complete ophthalmic examination, and strabismus was characterised in terms of direction, constanc…

PURPOSE: The cause and origin of primary strabismus are not well understood. It is thought that there is multifactorial genetic inheritance. Only linkage analysis has been applied to study the genetic causes and correlations. The objective of this study was the compilation and statistical evaluation of a useful cohort of families for linkage analysis.
METHODS: The archives of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Justus-Liebig-University Gießen were used as a database for this study. Medical records of visits between January 2001 and July 2008 were analysed. Evaluation was based on the medic…

Thyroid orbitopathy causes a unique form of strabismus with adult-onset diplopia. Prisms can be a temporizing measure, but many patients require strabismus surgery, which can be challenging. In this article, we highlight clinical guidelines for addressing strabismus due to thyroid orbitopathy and review our surgical experience.

BACKGROUND: Strabismus and amblyopia are known to cause visual dysfunction, self-image disorders, difficulty in seeking employment and social and emotional barriers. These factors can have a serious and detrimental effect upon the patients' health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Presently, a condition-specific questionnaire is not available for assessing the HRQOL in Chinese patients. This study developed a Chinese version of the Amblyopia and Strabismus Questionnaire (ASQE) and tested its reliability and validity in Chinese adult strabismus patients.
METHODS: Chinese strabismus adults, adul…

PURPOSE: Previous strabismus appearance studies using images from real face photographs could not preclude the effect of other facial landmarks, such as position and contour of brow, nose, and facial outline, from pure effect of ocular deviation itself. With conceptualized drawings of eyes, we simulated strabismus deviation and collected the responses of observers.
METHODS: The experiments consisted of three sessions: (1) one-eye, (2) two-eye cornea, and (3) two-eyelid deviation simulations. On a monitor, eight different ocular deviations in increments of 6 prism diopters of horizontal or ver…

PURPOSE: To determine the risk factors for strabismus and amblyopia in young Singapore Chinese children.
METHODS: A total of 3009 children were recruited for the population-based cross-sectional Strabismus, Amblyopia and Refractive Error in Singaporean Preschoolers Study (STARS). Strabismus was defined as any tropia identified on cover test. Visual acuity was measured in children aged 30-72 months with a logMAR chart where possible and the Sheridan-Gardiner test if not. Amblyopia was defined based on visual acuity and refractive error or presence of strabismus or past/present visual axis obst…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We previously reported that 12% of children under age 3 diagnosed with pseudoesotropia without significant refractive error later developed strabismus or mild refractive amblyopia. Mohan and Sharma recently reported on fifty-one patients with pseudoesotropia and hyperopia and noted that esotropia developed in 53.9% of the children with >1.50 D of hypermetropia compared to 2.6% of those who had ≤1.50 D hypermetropia, implying a low risk of esotropia unless hyperopia was greater than 1.50 D on initial exam. We reviewed our data to see if we had similar findings in our pat…

BACKGROUND: The Amblyopia and Strabismus Questionnaire (A&SQ) was previously developed to assess quality of life (QoL) in amblyopia and/or strabismus patients. Here, factor analysis with Varimax rotation was employed to confirm that the questions of the A&SQ correlated to dimensions of quality of life (QoL) in such patients.
METHODS: Responses on the A&SQ from three groups were analyzed: healthy adults (controls) (n = 53), amblyopia and/or strabismus patients (n = 72), and a historic cohort of amblyopes born between 1962-1972 and occluded between 1968-1974 (n = 173). The correlations among th…

INTRODUCTION: Thyroid orbitopathy is the most common cause of restrictive strabismus. Patients often present with vertical or horizontal double vision, or both, due to restriction involving most commonly the inferior and medial rectus muscles. Traditional muscle surgery involves release of the tight muscles. Previous literature has described a frequent need for secondary operations and an overcorrection incidence of up to 50%. Recognizing that the tight muscles are also limited in their excursion, it was proposed that operating on the better-moving eye, particularly the inferior oblique, might…

A 12-year-old girl was referred because of unilateral visual loss in the right eye 5 days after uneventful strabismus surgery for a divergent squint. She had hypermetropia of +8 diopters and the axial length of both eyes was below normal for that age. Investigation with funduscopy, central visual field examination, optical coherence tomography, and fluorescein angiography revealed choroidal edema in the affected eye. The macular edema responded well to parabulbar and topical steroids and vision recovered completely within 2 weeks. Strabismus surgery in highly hypermetropic eyes with a small ax…
