Prospective observational study of the use of omeprazole and maropitant citrate in veterinary specialist care.

The proton pump inhibitor omeprazole is administered to dogs with gastroduodenal ulceration or oesophagitis, whereas the neurokinin-1 receptor antagonist maropitant citrate is licensed as an antiemetic drug. In people, omeprazole is overprescribed in hospitals, increasing the risk of adverse effects and imposing unnecessary costs in healthcare. To investigate the use of omeprazole and maropitant in our veterinary specialist hospital, we conducted a prospective observational study in its Medicine and Surgery wards, recording patient data and obtaining contemporaneous information from clinicians

Peripheral arteriovenous fistula manifesting as antebrachial dermatopathy in a cat.

CASE DESCRIPTION A 13-year-old neutered male Abyssinian cat with a 4-month history of right forelimb edema and multifocal crusting lesions at the distal aspect of the antebrachium was referred to a veterinary teaching hospital for evaluation. Extensive hemorrhage from the lesions had been observed after self-grooming, and findings on histologic examination of a skin biopsy sample prior to referral were consistent with atypical dermal hemodynamics and inflammation. CLINICAL FINDINGS Diffuse pitting edema and multifocal, 3- to 4-mm-diameter sanguineous crusting lesions affecting the antebrachium

FEASIBILITY FOR USING HYPOFRACTIONATED STEREOTACTIC VOLUMETRIC MODULATED ARC RADIOTHERAPY (VMAT) WITH ADAPTIVE PLANNING FOR TREATMENT OF THYMOMA IN RABBITS: 15 CASES.

Thymoma is a relatively common tumor in rabbits. Treatment with surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy alone or in combination has been reported with varying outcomes. Stereotactic volumetric modulated arc radiotherapy delivered in a hypofractionated manner allows high doses of radiation to be delivered to the target volume while allowing sparing of adjacent critical structures. This therapy is ideally suited for thymomas in rabbits given their size, the difficulty of multiple anesthesia episodes and the complexity of the radiotherapy plans required due to the tumor's proximity to the he

Recurrence Rates for Mandibular Fibrosarcoma Associated With Mandibular Canal Invasion Following Mandibulectomy Procedures in Dogs.

Oral fibrosarcoma is a highly invasive tumour with local recurrence rates of up to 57.9% following surgical excision. The optimal surgical margins for long-term local control of oral fibrosarcoma have not been ascertained, especially when tumour invasion into the mandibular canal is present. The objective of this study was to evaluate the recurrence of mandibular fibrosarcoma in dogs following mandibulectomy procedures based on the presence or absence of mandibular canal invasion. Medical records of dogs that underwent a mandibulectomy for fibrosarcoma between January 2005 and December 2023 at

Fatal aortic hemorrhage subsequent to esophageal-aortic fishhook extraction in a dog.

A 3.5-year-old castrated male toy poodle dog weighing 4.9 kg was evaluated for an esophageal fishhook foreign body previously diagnosed by the referring veterinarians. Repeat radiographs at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) confirmed a single fishhook located in the middorsal thorax, spanning the 3rd to 6th intercostal spaces with an esophageal location prioritized. Concurrent pleural effusion, later identified as frank blood, made endoscopic retrieval unsafe due to possible great vessel involvement, necessitating surgical intervention. We decided to carry ou

Successful Treatment of an Acinar Pancreatic Carcinoma in an Inland Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps): A Case Report.

An adult, 362 g, male, intact inland bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was admitted to a veterinary clinic due to a temporary cloacal prolapse and a two-week history of reduced overall condition and forage intake. Physical examination revealed an approximately 2 × 1 cm round-shaped, rigid intracoelomic tissue mass. Multiple sand deposits were present on the cloacal mucous membranes, though no signs of cloacal prolapse were present. The lizard was otherwise responsive but showed reduced body tension and movement behavior. Initial fecal examination revealed a high-grade oxyuriasis. A 2 × 1.5 cm

Imaging and pathological findings of intramedullary inflammatory pseudotumour in a miniature dachshund: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory pseudotumours (IPTs) are distinctive lesions consisting of myofibroblastic spindle cells and a variety of inflammatory cells. The aetiology of IPTs is unknown. Reports of IPTs in veterinary medicine have been scarse. Moreover, only one case of intradural extramedullary IPT has been previously reported. In this report, we introduce the first known case of canine IPT, which occurred in the parenchyma of the spinal cord. CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-year-old female Miniature Dachshund presented with a 2-month-long history of progressively worsening ataxia and tetraparesis. Ne
