Detection of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) RNA in the sweat of HIV-infected patients.

OBJECTIVE: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is a significant health problem. Many studies reported that HIV was mainly transmitted through parenteral exposure, sexual activity, and body secretions, such as saliva and semen. Many people, including health-care providers and patient relatives, may easily contact with the sweat of HIV-infected patients. Although reference books assert that HIV does not transmit through sweat, to our knowledge, there is no systemic study which this statement is based upon. This study aims to investigate the potential of sweat to transmit HIV infection. …

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma of the eyelid: A clinical and histological conundrum.

A 60-year-old male presented with a 6-month-old history of a left upper lid mass. The mass was excised, and histopathological evaluation showed a well-circumscribed, multinodular, intradermal tumor consisting of round-to-oval cells with round nuclei and mucin filled cysts. On immunohistochemical analysis, the tumor cells stained positively for cytokeratin (CK)-7, CK-8, estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), mucicarmine, synaptophysin, gross cystic disease fluid protein-15 (GCDFP-15), and neuron-specific enolase (NSE). A diagnosis of endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma …

Blood, sweat, and tears: Red Blood Cell-Omics study objectives, design, and recruitment activities.

BACKGROUND: The Red Blood Cell (RBC)-Omics study was initiated to build a large data set containing behavioral, genetic, and biochemical characteristics of blood donors with linkage to outcomes of the patients transfused with their donated RBCs. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The cohort was recruited from four US blood centers. Demographic and donation data were obtained from center records. A questionnaire to assess pica, restless leg syndrome, iron supplementation, hormone use, and menstrual and pregnancy history was completed at enrollment. Blood was obtained for a complete blood count, DNA, an

Cutaneous Sweat Gland Carcinomas with Basaloid Differentiation: An Update with Emphasis on Differential Diagnoses.

This article focuses on primary cutaneous sweat gland carcinomas with basaloid differentiation, including cribriform apocrine carcinoma, endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma, mucinous carcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, spiradenocarcinoma, and digital papillary adenocarcinoma. These tumors are rare and pose a significant diagnostic challenge. Their clinical presentation is nonspecific and there is significant overlap of their histologic features. Confident diagnosis is necessary because their clinical behavior ranges from indolent, nonrecurring, nonmetastasizing tumors to those wit…

Head and neck sweat gland adenocarcinoma: A population-based perspective of a rare entity.

OBJECTIVES: Head and neck sweat gland adenocarcinoma (HNSGA) is an extremely rare malignancy. We present the first population-based analysis regarding this entity. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective population-based analysis. METHODS: Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results registry from 2000 to 2013, we extracted 627 cases of HNSGA. Data were analyzed for incidence trends, demographic and clinicopathologic traits, and predictors of disease-specific survival (DSS). RESULTS: The majority HNSGA cases were white, male, and 60 to 79 years old. The incidence was 0.036 per 100,000 people. …

WT1 expression in endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma: a study of 13 cases.

BACKGROUND: Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC), a low-grade sweat gland carcinoma with a predilection for the eyelids, often shows areas of benign eccrine cysts, atypical intracystic proliferation and associated mucinous carcinoma, suggesting tumor progression. Wilms tumor 1 (WT1) protein, a transcription factor, is overexpressed in many tumors and plays a role in oncogenesis. METHODS: A computer-based search for tumors diagnosed between 1989 and 2009 was conducted. Clinical data were obtained from pathology reports and patient records. Biopsies were reviewed for histolo…

Blood, sweat and tears: androgenic-anabolic steroid misuse and recurrent primary post-tonsillectomy haemorrhage.

A 30-year-old male body builder and androgenic-anabolic steroid and insulin abuser was admitted for day case elective tonsillectomy (bipolar). He returned with primary post-tonsillectomy haemorrhage 18 h after the operation and required bipolar cautery to the multiple small bleeding points in the right and left tonsillar fossa. Thorough coagulation screen was normal. Recurrent primary haemorrhage occurred 3 h post-operatively requiring immediate surgical intervention, removal of the inferior poles, precautionary throat packs, intubation and observation on the intensive treatment unit (ITU). A simple new non-invasive sweat indicator test for the diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy.

A simple non-invasive indicator test (Neuropad(®)) has been developed for the assessment of sweating and, hence, cholinergic innervation in the diabetic foot. The present review summarizes current knowledge on this diagnostic test. The diagnostic ability of this test is based on a colour change from blue to pink at 10 min, with excellent reproducibility, which lends itself to patient self-examination. It has a high sensitivity (65.1-100%) and negative predictive value (63-100%), with moderate specificity (32-78.5%) and positive predictive value (23.3-93.2%) for the diagnosis of diabetic periph…

[Structure of the sweat glands in essential axillar hyperhidrosis and after its surgical treatment].

The structure of sweat glands in their skin portions in axillar regions was investigated in essential hyperhydrosis and after its treatment using mechanical curettage, performed solely or in combination with ultrasonic destruction. There was shown, that hyperhydrosis is accompanied by the sweat glands canaliculus secretory portion enlargement and their diameter as well. Additionally, the secretory epithelium area is practically enhanced twice as in a control and its thickness - in 1.5 times. Curettage is accompanied with removal, along with hypoderma, of majority of the sweat glands terminal p…

Requirement for Shh and Fox family genes at different stages in sweat gland development.

Sweat glands play a fundamental role in thermal regulation in man, but the molecular mechanism of their development remains unknown. To initiate analyses, we compared the model of Eda mutant Tabby mice, in which sweat glands were not formed, with wild-type (WT) mice. We inferred developmental stages and critical genes based on observations at seven time points spanning embryonic, postnatal and adult life. In WT footpads, sweat gland germs were detected at E17.5. The coiling of secretory portions started at postnatal day 1 (P1), and sweat gland formation was essentially completed by P5. Consist…

Sweat-gland tumours: a clinical review of cases in one centre over 20 years.

AIMS: Sweat-gland tumours (SGTs) are uncommon, but malignant varieties are very rare. We have added our data on 30 new cases seen at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust to the published literature, particularly concentrating on clinical issues. We include a literature review. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust database was searched for cases of SGT from 1972. Data were collected on all cases, including patient demographics and tumour characteristics, treatment and outcome. RESULTS: Thirty cases were confirmed histologically to be SGTs. Fourteen were malignant, 1…

Immunolocalization of aquaporin-5 expression in sweat gland cells from normal and anhidrotic horses.

Western blot analysis showed that sweat gland cells from freely sweating horses expressed the water channel aquaporin-5 (AQP-5). Immunohistochemistry revealed a strong AQP-5-like activity reaction at the apical membrane of the glandular secretory cells, which was absent from the surrounding myoepithelium and all other skin structures. In anhidrotic horses, AQP-5 was also found at the apical membrane of the luminal sweat gland cells, but the level of expression reduced with the length of time that the animal had displayed anhidrosis. The level of AQP-5 expression was substantially reduced in an…

Ectopic breast tissue and breast-like sweat gland metaplasias: an overlapping spectrum of lesions.

There are many similarities in the morphology of benign and malignant lesions of the sweat glands and the breasts. The recently described cutaneous mammary-like sweat glands, also known as mixed sweat glands or apoeccrine glands, are also a likely source of selected proliferations that closely mimic those of the breast. We present three cases of breast-like lesions arising in the skin that demonstrate the ways in which the morphologic and pathologic continuum of the mammary glands, cutaneous mammary-like glands, and sweat glands can produce difficulties in precise diagnosis. The examples demon…

Fox-Fordyce disease in two prepubertal girls: histopathologic demonstration of eccrine sweat gland involvement.

This report presents two prepubertal girls with Fox-Fordyce disease. The pruritic papules extensively affected the areas where apocrine glands are distributed (axillae, periareolar and intermammary zones, pubes, infraumbilical midline), and also extended to the neck and face near the external angle of the eyes in one child. Analyses of several biopsy specimens showed that the main lesion was a spongiotic vesicle containing inflammatory cells and keratinocytes affecting the hair infundibula and acrosyringia, together, with hyperkeratosis of both adnexa. The cause of the disease remains elusive,

Coexpression of cytokeratin and vimentin intermediate filaments in benign and malignant sweat gland tumors.

The coexpression of cytokeratin and vimentin intermediate filaments has been immunohistochemically evaluated in 124 benign and malignant sweat gland tumors of various types in comparison to normal sweat glands. In addition, all neoplasms have been stained by an antibody to alpha-smooth muscle actin. Epithelial cells reacted with the pan-cytokeratin antibody lu-5. In normal sweat glands, vimentin immunoreactivity was restricted to myoepithelial cells and to some cells of the coiled duct. In benign sweat gland tumors (n = 88), coexpression of vimentin and alpha-smooth muscle actin was frequently…

[The so-called sweat-gland carcinoma of the human breast. A review (author's transl)].

The term sweat-gland carcinoma of the breast is used in widely different meanings. Nonetheless, two histologically well-characterized types may be recognized: 1. The apocrine (oncocytic) carcinoma is composed of large well-delimited cells with finely granular, oxyphilic cytoplasm similar to that of oncocytes of other organs. They resemble the "pale" oxyphilic cells of the aging normal breast whose cytoplasm in part show the same quality. These carcinoma cells are regarded as mammary cells in a state of transition into oncocytes. Any similarity they have to cells of the apocrine axillary sweat-…

The cholinergic nervous system and immediate hypersensitivity. 1. Eccrine sweat responses in allergic patients.

The cholinergically innervated human eccrine sweat gland is a readily available organ permitting the assessment in allergic patients of cholinergic reactivity with few or no adrenergic influences. The sweat responses of four matched groups (male allergic, female allergic, male control, and female control) to intradermal Mecholyl from 0.1 mug to 100 mug was compared; the 45 male and 45 female allergic patients demonstrated statistically significant increases in sweat responses to essentially all concentrations of Mecholyl examined. No difference in the sweat responses of patients with allergic …
