Role of TNF-α/TNFR1 in intense acute swimming-induced delayed onset muscle soreness in mice.

The injection of cytokines such as TNF-α induces muscle pain. Herein, it was addressed the role of endogenous TNF-α/TNFR1 signaling in intense acute swimming-induced muscle mechanical hyperalgesia in mice. Mice were exposed to water during 30 s (sham) or to a single session of 30-120 min of swimming. Intense acute swimming induced a dose-dependent (time of exercise-dependent) muscle mechanical hyperalgesia, which peaked after 24 h presenting characteristics of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). The intense acute swimming (120 min)-induced muscle mechanical hyperalgesia was reduced in etaner…

Acute Exposure to Microcystin-Producing Cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa Alters Adult Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Swimming Performance Parameters.

Microcystins (MCs) are toxins produced by cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), primarily Microcystis aeruginosa, forming water blooms worldwide. When an organism is exposed to environmental perturbations, alterations in normal behavioral patterns occur. Behavioral repertoire represents the consequence of a diversity of physiological and biochemical alterations. In this study, we assessed behavioral patterns and whole-body cortisol levels of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposed to cell culture of the microcystin-producing cyanobacterium M. aeruginosa (MC-LR, strain RST9501). MC-LR exposure (100 μ

Blue and red light modulates SigB-dependent gene transcription, swimming motility and invasiveness in Listeria monocytogenes.

BACKGROUND: In a number of gram-positive bacteria, including Listeria, the general stress response is regulated by the alternative sigma fac … nd of bacterial invasiveness for Caco-2 enterocytes. Exposure to blue light also strongly inhibited swimming motility of the bacteria in a Lmo0799- and SigB-dependent manner, red light had no effect there. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our data established that visible, in particular blue light is an important environmental signal with an impact on gene expre …

Power isn't everything: muscle function and energetic costs during steady swimming in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua).

Power produced by red myotomal muscles of fish during cruise swimming appears seldom maximized, so we sought to investigate whether economy may impact or dominate muscle function. We measured cost of transport (COT) using oxygen consumption and the strain trajectories and electromyographic activity of red muscle measured at anterior (ANT) and posterior (POST) locations while Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) swam steadily at speeds between 0.3 and 1.0 body lengths (BL) s(-1). We then measured the power produced by isolated segments of red muscle when activated either as in the swimming cod or such t…

Function of the heterocercal tail in white sturgeon: flow visualization during steady swimming and vertical maneuvering.

Basal ray-finned fishes possess a heterocercal tail in which the dorsal lobe containing the extension of the vertebral column is longer than … s of the wake downstream from the tail. These variables were measured for sturgeon exhibiting three swimming behaviors at 1.2 L s(-)(1), where L is total body length: rising through the water column, holding vertical position, and sinking through the water column. For vertical body velocity, body angle and path angle values, all behaviors were significantl …

Relative size and agonistic behaviour in the female velvet swimming crab, Necora puber (L.) (Brachyura, Portunidae).

Female velvet swimming crabs (Necora puber) fight readily in the laboratory, with interactions being initiated equally often by the larger and smaller of the two opponents, but with the larger usually being victorious. In 17 out of 65 interactions, however, a smaller crab won against a larger one, and possible reasons for this are discussed. In two respects our results are surprising in the context of insights gained from games theory: firstly, the fights do not show a gradual pattern of escalation through display to overt physical violence; and secondly, fights do not become more costly in te…

A swimming-associated outbreak of hemorrhagic colitis caused by Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Shigella sonnei.

BACKGROUND: In the summer of 1991, simultaneous outbreaks of bloody diarrhea and hemolytic-uremic syndrome caused by Escherichia coli O157:H … eir illnesses were not associated with food or beverage consumption. All the case patients reported swimming, however, and in case-control studies swimming was strongly associated with both types of infection (P = 0.015 or less). The case patients were more likely than the controls to report having swallowed lake water, and they had spent more time in the …

'Can my child swim with grommets?' Are we giving parents clear and consistent advice?

BACKGROUND: Guidance on swimming after grommet insertion remains inconsistent. While some studies suggest minimal risk of infection without precautions, clinical advice varies significantly. Parents frequently express a need for clear, standardised information to help them confidently manage their child's swimming activities. AIM: This study aimed to assess the advice currently given to parents and determine whether updated resources are needed. METHOD: Between 1 March and 30 June 2025, 28 children underwent grommet insertion at the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital, Brighton. Responses we…

Blocking 5-HT2B receptors abolishes psilocybin's efficacy in the rat forced swim test.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder is one of the most debilitating psychiatric disorders worldwide. First-line treatments such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have significant limitations, including delayed onset of therapeutic effects and treatment resistance in about 30% of patients. Increasing evidence suggests that acute administration of serotonergic psychedelics, such as psilocybin, produces rapid and long-lasting antidepressant effects, including in treatment-resistant patients. However, it remains unknown which specific 5-HT receptor subtype mediates psilocybin's antidepr

Very early swimming prevents the establishment of musculoskeletal dysfunction in a rodent model of Cerebral Palsy.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is characterized by motor and cognitive impairments resulting from injuries to the central nervous system. Targeting early muscle activity during critical developmental periods may prevent musculoskeletal damage associated with CP through muscle-derived antioxidant and trophic factors released upon activation. We investigated whether early-life swimming (SW) prevents the establishment of musculoskeletal deficits in a CP rat model. Pregnant Wistar rats received intraperitoneal injections of lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 200 mg/kg) on embryonic days 18 and 19. At birth (P0), CP pu…

The Forced Swim Test (FST) is a widely used preclinical model for assessing antidepressant efficacy, studying stress response, and evaluatin … they are often unable to accurately differentiate the major subtypes of movement patterns, such as swimming and climbing. To address these limitations, we propose a novel approach based on machine learning (ML) using a three-dimensional residual convolutional neural network (3D RCNN) that processes video pixels directly, capturing the spatiotemporal dynam …

Effect of biotin supplementation and swimming training on oxidative stress and testicular function in male rats.

Oxidative stress (OS) affects testicular function and is a significant cause of sperm cell dysfunction in males. The development of male infertility is closely linked to a sedentary lifestyle and diet. This study aimed to characterize the protective effects of biotin supplementation (BS) and swimming training (ST) on OS markers in the reproductive system of male rats. Forty male rats (200-250 g) were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 10 per group) and treated for 28 days as follows: control, BS (this group received BS through oral gavage), ST, and BS + ST groups. Our results showed that gl…

Individual Determinants as the Causes of Failure in Learning to Swim with the Example of 10-Year-Old Children.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to identify which, and to what extent, selected individual determinants of 10-year-old children may limit the final achievement in learning to swim. In view of the above, the research hypothesis was formulated that some children, despite regular attendance at swimming classes, do not achieve the learning outcomes set in the curriculum. The reason for this may be unfavorable (compared to their peers) morphological and functional characteristics, coordination motor abilities, and problems with fear of water. METHODS: The study was conducted on a …
