A simple and sensitive immunoenzymatic assay for detection of specific IgE in hydatid disease is presented. Sera from 43 patients with hydatidosis, eight with schistosomiasis, two with taeniasis, two with cancer and 16 healthy blood donors were tested by both the immunoenzymatic technique and the classical radioallergosorbent test. Data were analysed in terms of different sensitivity and specificity of the two methods. The results indicate that the enzymatic method performed in microplates is as sensitive as the radioimmunological one (77% of positivity for both the tests), but the latter suff…

A paper radioimmunosorbent test (PRIST) was shown to be sensitive and reproducible when used with excretory/secretory antigen of Toxocara ca … i-human IgG for 1 h and counts determined in a gamma counter. Sera from patients with fascioliasis, taeniasis, schistosomiasis, oxyuriasis, trichinellosis and ancyclostomiasis gave counts similar to cord serum controls. Sera from patients with ascariasis gave counts of up to twice as great as controls, but sera from patients with toxicariasis produced count …

The genus Taenia belongs to the class Cestoda and comprises a diverse group of species of medical, veterinary, and ecological importance. These tapeworms exhibit complex life cycles involving carnivorous definitive hosts and herbivorous or omnivorous intermediate hosts. Taenia solium, T. saginata, and T. asiatica are particularly important due to their impact on human health, notably through taeniasis and cysticercosis. Mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) have emerged as powerful tools for taxonomy, diagnostics, and evolutionary studies of these parasites. Complete mitogenome sequences are ava…

Taenia solium, T. saginata, and T. asiatica are cestode pathogens causing taeniasis in humans. Houseflies can transfer Taenia eggs to food. However, houseflies are thought to carry only small numbers of Taenia eggs, sometimes fewer than 10. Although several PCR-based methods have been developed to detect Taenia DNA, these require more than 10 eggs for adequate detection. We developed a multiplex PCR method with high specificity for the discrimination among the eggs of the three Taenia species, T. solium, T. saginata, and T. asiatica, using 18S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) as a genetic marker. This tec…

Taeniid infections in intermediate hosts manifest themselves as extraintestinal larval stages which, in early development, lack species-specific characteristics. The inability to distinguish infections of zoonotic importance such as Echinococcus multilocularis from other taeniid infections that have mainly veterinary significance stimulated the development of species-specific molecular diagnostics. In this study, the prevalence of taeniid infections in potential intermediate hosts was evaluated using both morphological diagnosis and a newly described multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) f

The author presents the results of his own studies that were conducted during many years (1980-2007) and the data of Byelorussian helminthologists on the detection of the cestode of H. taeniaeformis and its larvae (strobilocercus), which induce hydatigerosis and strobilocercosis, respectively, in animals in the Republic of Belarus. This helminth (an imago and a larva) may parasite in man. Emphasis is laid on the fact that the residents of Belarus can be infected on chance ingestion of eggs of the cestode of H. taeniaeformis.

Among taeniid tapeworms infecting humans through pork or beef, Taenia solium Linnaeus 1758 and Taenia saginata Goeze 1782 have already been known. Based on the morphologic characteristics of adult and metacestodes of Asian Taenia saginata, the third kind of human taeniid tapeworm known to distribute in Asian countries, a new species name of Taenia asiatica is proposed. In addition to the known biology in their intermediate hosts, T. asiatica was different morphologically from Taenia saginata Goeze 1782 in having the unarmed rostellum on the scolex of adult, the large number of 'uterine twigs'

Jirds (Meriones unguiculatus) were treated with dexamethasone and inoculated subcutaneously with 100-300 oncospheres of Taenia saginata. Ten of the jirds received 0.5 mg of the drug per animal twice weekly during the first month after inoculation and then once a week until necropsy and four of these became infected. Up to 20 viable metacestodes were recovered in the subcutaneous tissue at the site of inoculation three months after infection.

The efficacy of Oncosphere Secretory Antigen (OSA) in protecting sheep against the larval stage of Taenia multiceps was assessed in 47 sheep in 2 trials. In the pilot trial no cerebral coenuri were found in 3 sheep which were treated with OSA 28 and 14 days before challenge with 6 000 eggs of T. multiceps. Cerebral coenuri were present in 3 untreated controls. In the second experiment 30 sheep were similarly treated with OSA and challenged with 5 000 eggs of T. multiceps, while 11 sheep served as untreated controls. At necropsy either developing coenuri or degenerate lesions were present in th

A case is reported of acute edematous pancreatitis due to obstruction of Wirsung's canal by Taenia saginata rings. The patients recovered after release of the obstruction by sphincterotomy followed by drainage of the biliary tract.
