Tropical botfly infection is well described, though endemic botfly myiasis in humans is rare in temperate regions. Reported is a case of myiasis from Cuterebra botfly larvae in a man from northern New York with no tropical travel. The authors discuss the epidemiology, life-cycle, and diagnosis of non-tropical botfly infection.

We report a rare case of Strongyloides stercoralis meningitis in an immunocompromised patient treated for a lung carcinoma. Despite his Belgian origin, he was infected with S. stercoralis due to his former work as a miner. Although mostly prevalent in (sub)tropical areas, there are temperate regions where this nematode can occur.

Renal hydatid disease is a rare condition in temperate climates, but must be diagnosed. The authors describe the systematic radiological and serological assessment for a renal cystic mass establishing a preoperative diagnosis. On the basis of this preoperative diagnosis, essential precautions can be taken to avoid the specific complications of this disease and a nephron-sparing procedure can be performed.

Hydatid disease is an important medical problem in countries of the temperate zones. A 21-year-old female patient was admitted to our outpatient clinics with a complaint of a progressive swelling in the left preauricular region. The case of the patient with hydatid disease that developed in the left preauricular region is presented in detail. Hydatid cyst in this location is rare.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a major cause of chronic liver disease worldwide and can lead to fibrosis and cirrhosis. The latest surveillance report published by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism showed that liver cirrhosis was the 12th leading cause of death in the United States, with a total of 29,925 deaths in 2007, 48% of which were alcohol related. The spectrum of ALD includes simple steatosis, alcoholic hepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and superimposed hepatocellular carcinoma. Early work on the pathogenesis of the disease focused on ethanol metabolism-associated

We describe 2 patients with chronic alcoholism who over a period of several years developed epilepsy associated with a cerebellar syndrome and action myoclonus. The clinical picture suggested progressive myoclonic epilepsy, but subsequent investigations did not confirm this diagnosis. Myoclonus worsened during abstinence and was relieved during indulgence. We believe that this special clinical syndrome should be recognized as a complication of chronic alcoholism.

Excessive ethanol ingestion induces hypoandrogenism in male subjects. To confirm its presence and to study its relationship with the degree of liver damage and alcohol abstinence, plasma sex hormones were measured in alcoholic patients without liver failure, after two different abstinence periods. Patients were 30 male chronic alcoholics admitted to the Alcoholism Ward for treatment of their addiction. On admission, we measured: testosterone (T), estradiol (E), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG). A liver biopsy was also performe

Ethane exhalation was measured in 42 control subjects, 52 patients with various non-alcoholic liver diseases, and 89 alcohol abusers who had been admitted to hospital for alcohol withdrawal and assessment of liver disease (six with normal liver tests, 10 with steatosis with or without fibrosis, six with alcoholic hepatitis, 29 with cirrhosis, 34 with both cirrhosis and alcoholic hepatitis, and four with both cirrhosis and a hepatocellular carcinoma). Ethane exhalation was similar in control subjects and in patients with non-alcoholic liver diseases, but was five times higher in alcohol abusers

BACKGROUND: The northern part of India harbours a great diversity of medicinal plants due to its distinct geography and ecological marginal conditions. The traditional medical systems of northern India are part of a time tested culture and honored still by people today. These traditional systems have been curing complex disease for more than 3,000 years. With rapidly growing demand for these medicinal plants, most of the plant populations have been depleted, indicating a lack of ecological knowledge among communities using the plants. Thus, an attempt was made in this study to focus on the eco

Borrelia miyamotoi disease is a hard tick-borne relapsing fever illness that occurs across the temperate climate zone. Human B. miyamotoi disease in immunocompetent patients has been described in Russia, North America, and Japan. We describe a case of B. miyamotoi disease in an immunocompetent patient in western Europe.

alpha 1-acid glycoprotein, alpha 1-antitrypsin, and ceruloplasmin levels were followed in 150 children from the rural tropics after arrival in the temperate zone. It is postulated that multiple intestinal helminthiases, especially ancylostomiasis, cause an acute phase type of reaction which is enhanced by immunization with T.A.B.-cholera vaccine.

Two cases of pyogenic infection of skeletal muscle presented in a fashion that initially suggested a diagnosis of septic arthritis. One infection was caused by Staphylococcus aureus, but the other was caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, which is rarely implicated in pyomyositis. We note that the number of reported cases of pyomyositis in temperate climates has increased in recent years.

Trichinosis is world-wide in distribution, occurring in tropical, temperate, and polar regions. Although incidence of the disease appears to be declining in most regions, it is still widely distributed in Europe and is increasing in many parts of Africa. In recent years, the incidence of trichinosis in the United States also has increased. This article reviews the nature of immunity to trichinosis.

Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal nematode in humans, and estimated about tens of millions of people are infected worldwide. This parasite is endemic in tropical or temperate and subtropical climates like Bangladesh. The authors report a 33-year-old man who presented with recurrent life-threatening upper gastrointestinal bleeding from gastric infection by S stercoralis.

We conducted a 20-year statewide cohort of 115 Elizabethkingia bloodstream infections in Queensland, Australia. Incidence was ∼9-fold higher in tropical vs temperate regions, with 61 % community-onset. Ciprofloxacin susceptibility was 74.8 %. Thirty-day mortality was 14.9 %, and ciprofloxacin resistance independently predicted death, though interpretation is limited without treatment data.

Human myiasis is a rare condition. It is more common in tropical regions. Umbilical cord myiasis has not previously been reported from a temperate climate, for example, New Jersey. We report a 9-day-old infant with umbilical cord myiasis. The maggots were identified by the entomologist as the larvae of Sarcophagidae, more commonly known as flesh flies.

Pyomyositis is relatively rare in temperate climates. This is the first report of a case of calf pyomyositis associated with septic arthritis of the knee. This case illustrates that pyomyositis should be included in the differential diagnosis of a swollen, tender calf in an emergency setting. The other notable feature of this case is that the infective organism was not the usual Staphylococcus aureus but rather the relatively rarely involved Streptococcus pyogenes.

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne infection affecting children living in temperate parts of the western hemisphere. The widespread anxiety about the long-term consequences of the illness, however, finds no support in the literature. Although the number of long-term follow-up studies is limited, the prognosis in children treated for Lyme disease seems to be extremely favourable.
