Three innovative assays are developed for the detection of enzymatic activities of glucose oxidase (GOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) by the generation of CdS quantum dots (QDs) in situ using non-conventional enzymatic reactions. In the first assay, GOx catalyzes the oxidation of 1-thio-β-D-glucose to give 1-thio-β-D-gluconic acid. Photodegradation of furosemide was studied under the influence of fluorescent and UV lights. Photodecomposition of furosemide solutions appeared to follow first-order kinetics. The compound was found to be most stable at an optimum pH of 7. Long-wave UV light caused the fastest rate of degradation of furosemide. Glutathione, thiourea, EDTA, sodium thiosulfate, sodium metabisulfite, glycine, sodium benzoate and uric acid were found to be ineffective as photoprotective agents. We describe the case of a 42-year-old woman who developed encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) after 7 years on peritoneal dialysis, with clinical relief by enterolysis associated to treatment with tamoxifen, corticosteroids and parenteral nutrition in haemodialysis. We have developed an analytical assay to detect the enzymatic activity of acetylcholine esterase and alkaline phosphatase based on the generation of quantum dots by enzymatic products. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Calciphylaxis is a disorder of cutaneous microvascular calcification and thrombosis leading to chronic, excruciatingly painful, progressive wounds with a high risk of sepsis and death. The diagnosis and treatment of calciphylaxis presents significant challenges. A poorly understood disease, the management of calciphylaxis has mostly been restricted to wound management and a few novel therapies. Data from patient registries and new studies on causal pathways is stimulating the development of pathogenesis-based medical therapies.

Calciphylaxis, also known as calcific uremic arteriolopathy, is a cutaneous ischemic small vessel vasculopathy seen in 1 to 4% of patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis. It is associated with extreme pain and a 60 to 80% mortality rate in the setting of few and frequently ineffective therapeutic options, although this may be changing based on reports of success with newer therapies.

Biodiesel from microalgae seems to be the only renewable biofuel that has the potential to completely replace the petroleum-derived transport fuels. Therefore, improving lipid content of microalgal strains could be a cost-effective second generation feedstock for biodiesel production. Sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (SdAD) is a promising nitrogen removing process, but its applications were generally constrained by conventional electron donors (i.e., thiosulfate (Na2S2O3)) with high valence and limited bioavailability. Herein, an immobilized electron donor by loading elemental sulfur on the surface of polyurethane foam (PFSF) was developed, and its feasibility for SdAD was investigated. This study evaluated the efficacy of sodium thiosulphate (ST) as an intermediate irrigant between sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorhexidine (CHX) to avoid the formation of the brown-coloured precipitate. The in vitro experiment used microtubes to test the mixture of 2.5% NaOCl, 2% CHX and 5% ST solutions, varying their order and time of addition. In the ex vivo experiment, 10 bovine teeth were divided into two groups according to the intermediate irrigant used: distilled water (control) and 5% ST (experimental). Colour change occurred in all microtubes after interaction between solutions.

A highly efficient Cu-catalyzed dual C-S bonds formation reaction, proceeding in alcohol and water under air, is reported, in which inodorous stable Na2S2O3 is used as a sulfurating reagent. This powerful strategy provides a practical and efficient approach to construct thioethers, using readily available aromatic amines and alkyl halides as starting materials. Sensitive and synthetic useful functional groups could be tolerated. Furthermore, pharmaceuticals, glucose, an amino acid, and a chiral ligand are successfully furnished by this late-stage sulfuration strategy.
