Ticks are ectoparasites that transmit various types of human and animal pathogens. In particular, emerging and re-emerging diseases caused by tick-borne viruses are public health concerns around the world. However, in many countries of the sub-Saharan African region, epidemiological information on tick-borne viral infections is limited, and their prevalence and distribution remain largely unknown. In this study, we conducted surveillance on ticks to detect medically important tick-borne bunyaviruses in three study sites in and near to Accra, the capital city of Ghana, in 2015. Domestic dogs an

One hundred and sixteen pure-bred Normandy calves previously immunised against babesiosis and anaplasmosis were transported to the Caribbean Coast of Colombia where they divided into 2 equal groups and placed in separate pastures. One group sustained heavy infestation with Boophilus microplus ticks. The second group became lightly infested. The heavily infested calves suffered average losses in body weight of 38 kg and a 48% decrease in mean packed cell volume. Twenty-three (40%) died 16 to 39 days following arrival from severe ixodiasis and babesiosis. Mortality did not occur nor were signifi

In the United States, 30,158 people were reported as having contracted Lyme disease during 2010; 96% of the cases in 2011 were reported from 13 northeast and north-central states. Time of tick attachment is a critical factor. Prolonged attachment allows time for a bacterium to move from tick to human. Patient history and meticulous skin inspection are the most important elements used in diagnosis of Lyme disease. The most common drug for treatment is doxycycline. Ticks find their hosts by several senses: odor, moisture, heat, and vibration. Avoidance of tick-infested areas, such as wooded area

Accidental entry of insects and other arthropods is a common aetiology of aural foreign bodies (FB) presenting to accident and emergency departments. A retrospective study revealed that the FB in almost half (148) of 348 cases of aural FB investigated at the Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital was an arthropod. The most common arthropod encountered was the cockroach, followed by a cattle tick. The high prevalence of tick infestation of the human ear canal (i.e. human otoacariasis) currently appears to be unique to the Malaysian state of Kelantan. The presentation of patients with intra-aural ti

A comparison of the tick resistance of indigenous Mashona and crossbred Afrikander x Sussex oxen following natural tick infestation indicated that significantly more African blue ticks Boophilus decoloratus were found on the crossbred than the indigenous cattle (P < 0.05). The two groups of cattle were exposed to Babesia bigemina and Theileria taurotragi as indicated by high antibody titres on the indirect fluorescent antibody test, but no antibodies could be demonstrated to Anaplasma marginale and T. parva bovis despite the presence of their vectors. INTRODUCTION: Babesia bovis is one of the main causative agents of bovine babesiosis. Livestock farmers are constantly struggling to control the population of the tick vector and reduce babesiosis outbreaks. For this reason, the development of new control strategies is necessary. Tick microbiota consists of a diverse group of symbiotic, commensal, and pathogenic microorganisms. It has been shown that altering the microbiota population prevents the transmission of apicomplexan pathogens. This work represents a primary exploratory approach to determine the changes B. bovis infection causes in th

This study evaluated rickettsial infection in ticks collected on toads from the northern Brazilian Amazon (Amapá state), where to our knowledge there are neither records of ticks from amphibians nor rickettsial infections in ticks. During 2016-2017, a total of 22 free-living toads were captured and identified as Rhinella marina. Overall, 12 (54.5%) toads were parasitized by a total of 97 ticks (6 males, 39 females, 31 nymphs, 21 larvae), giving a mean intensity of 8.1 ticks per infested toad. Two tick species were morphologically identified: Amblyomma rotundatum Koch (31 females, 14 nymphs), a

Rabbits and sheep are unable to acquire a resistance to larvae and nymphs of Amblyomma hebraeum. After repeated infestation of hosts there is no progressive decline in either the tick yield or the engorged weight of fed ticks. Seasonal fluctuations in engorged weights do occur however, with the weight declining in early to midwinter and increasing in early to midsummer. Changes in hose physiology as a result of low temperature acclimatization appear to be responsible for the fluctuations. Tick yield is determined by the amount of grooming undertaken by hosts. The feedings periods of larvae and

The effects of varying densities of lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum (L.), on measured physiological parameters of beef cattle in a controlled environment was determined. Steers were infested with either 0, 20, 60, or 120 pairs of adult ticks. Heart rate, respiration, rectal temperature, fecal and urine excretions, and water and feed consumption were monitored daily. Blood samples were taken every 3rd d to measure cortisol, total proteins, urea nitrogen, and glucose levels. Hematocrits were also taken at each blood sampling. Results showed that A. americanum evoked elevated heart rates. Th

Multiple engorged tick nymphs (n= 6) were collected from an injured spotted wood owl (Strix seloputo) in Kelantan, Peninsular Malaysia. Morphological identification of the nymphs revealed that the ticks were Haemaphysalis wellingtoni, based on several distinctive features: (1) internal edge of palpal article III extending far beyond the internal edge of palpal article II; and (2) four feathery and closespaced infrainternal setae. Subsequent molecular analysis of a randomly selected nymph targeting the mitochondrial 16S gene corroborated with the species identity of the tick. To date, this is f

Rhipicephalus microplus infestations are a major concern for cattle production in neotropical regions. Anti-tick vaccines represent a sustainable alternative to chemical acaricides; however, improving vaccine efficacy remains challenging. This study evaluated the protective efficacy of polypeptide-based formulations of pBm86 and pSubolesin administered as co-immunization or as a cocktail in naturally infested cattle. Twelve calves were assigned to three groups: G1: 100 μg pBm86 + 50 μg pSubolesin co-immunized; G2: same formulation in cocktail; and G3: control. The cocktail significantly reduce

Throughout recorded history, the canine-human connection has varied by custom, purpose, and intensity. In many cultures worldwide, dogs have long been considered essential workers, protectors and guardians, and, often, an integral part of the family unit. Ensuring the health and quality of life of those companion animals is essential to preserving the bond between dogs and their owners. Fortunately, advances in veterinary science continue to improve treatments and cures for and prophylaxis against a variety of deadly canine diseases, several of which can be sourced to ectoparasites or endopara

UNLABELLED: Background: Ticks are ectoparasites of major veterinary and medical importance due to their capacity to vector numerous pathogens. Bacterial, viral, and protozoan diseases that affect livestock and companion animals can cause economic losses and reduce productivity. To protect animal health, ensure food safety, and reduce the incidence of tick-borne disease in humans, effective surveillance and integrated control of ticks are essential.
AIM: The objective of this article was to employ morphological identification and molecular techniques to detect and confirm Ixodes holocyclus tic

BACKGROUND: Canine babesiosis is a clinically significant tick-borne disease, caused by different Babesia species. Babesia canis, one of the most important and widespread species in Europe, is transmitted by Dermacentor reticulatus ticks and can cause potentially fatal canine disease. Prevention of pathogen transmission can be achieved by regular tick control and prophylaxis. The present study evaluated the efficacy of a single oral application of lotilaner (Credelio™, Elanco) in dogs for blocking pathogen transmission compared to a negative control group.
METHODS: Twenty-four B. canis-negati

The bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii is the etiological agent of an acute, severe disease called Rocky Mountain spotted fever in the United States or Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) in Brazil. In addition to these two countries, the disease has also been reported to affect humans in Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Argentina. Like humans, dogs are also susceptible to R. rickettsii infection. However, despite the wide distribution of R. rickettsii in the Western Hemisphere, reports of R. rickettsii-induced illness in dogs has been restricted to the United States. The present study evaluate

Amblyomma sculptum is a tick of medical-veterinary importance. Areas with high infestations need to be monitored, and parasitized hosts treated accordingly. Carbon dioxide (CO2) traps and acaricides are commonly deployed as control measures, although with some disadvantages such as high costs, challenging logistics and vertebrate intoxication. Semiochemicals have the potential to improve tick attraction to traps and monitoring devices and alleviate the burden of A. sculptum infestations. Four concentrations (10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25 %) of 13 semiochemical candidates (CO2 only at 5 % as the standard
