It's about time: revisiting temporal processing deficits in dyslexia.

Temporal processing in French children with dyslexia was evaluated in three tasks: a word identification task requiring implicit temporal pr … d alertness, faulty anchoring, or overall noisy processing. In the framework of cognitive models of time perception, these data point to a dysfunction of the 'internal clock' of dyslexic children. These results are broadly compatible with the recent temporal sampling theory of dyslexia.

Altered perceptual binding in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a common multifaceted neuropsychiatric disorder. Research in GTS has traditionally focussed on mechanisms underlying changes in motor processes in these patients. There is, however, growing interest in GTS related sensory phenomena. According to the Theory of Event-coding (TEC), sensory stimuli do not only serve representational functions but also action-related functions. In the current study, we use the TEC framework to examine whether the way perceptual features are processed is altered in GTS. The results show that basic perceptual processes differ b

Common parietal activation in musical mental transformations across pitch and time.

We previously observed that mental manipulation of the pitch level or temporal organization of melodies results in functional activation in the human intraparietal sulcus (IPS), a region also associated with visuospatial transformation and numerical calculation. Two outstanding questions about these musical transformations are whether pitch and time depend on separate or common processing in IPS, and whether IPS recruitment in melodic tasks varies depending upon the degree of transformation required (as it does in mental rotation). In the present study we sought to answer these questions by ap

The parietal cortex in sensemaking: the dissociation of multiple types of spatial information.

According to the data-frame theory, sensemaking is a macrocognitive process in which people try to make sense of or explain their observations by processing a number of explanatory structures called frames until the observations and frames become congruent. During the sensemaking process, the parietal cortex has been implicated in various cognitive tasks for the functions related to spatial and temporal information processing, mathematical thinking, and spatial attention. In particular, the parietal cortex plays important roles by extracting multiple representations of magnitudes at the early

Object motion continuity and the flash-lag effect.

When a visual object is briefly flashed, it appears to lag behind another moving object (flash-lag effect; FLE). Previous studies showed that a sudden change to the moving object at the time of the flash presentation would eliminate the FLE. We examined whether the FLE would be eliminated when a sudden color change was embedded in a sequence of color alternations on a moving object. Observers viewed a moving disc, the color of which did not change at all, changed only once when another stationary object flashed, or alternated regularly (Experiment 1) or randomly (Experiment 2) between two colo

Assessment of rhythmic entrainment at multiple timescales in dyslexia: evidence for disruption to syllable timing.

Developmental dyslexia is associated with rhythmic difficulties, including impaired perception of beat patterns in music and prosodic stress patterns in speech. Spoken prosodic rhythm is cued by slow (<10 Hz) fluctuations in speech signal amplitude. Impaired neural oscillatory tracking of these slow amplitude modulation (AM) patterns is one plausible source of impaired rhythm tracking in dyslexia. Here, we characterise the temporal profile of the dyslexic rhythm deficit by examining rhythmic entrainment at multiple speech timescales. Adult dyslexic participants completed two experiments aimed

Prism adaptation alters spatial remapping in healthy individuals: evidence from double-step saccades.

The visual system is able to represent and integrate large amounts of information as we move our gaze across a scene. This process, called spatial remapping, enables the construction of a stable representation of our visual environment despite constantly changing retinal images. Converging evidence implicates the parietal lobes in this process, with the right hemisphere having a dominant role. Indeed, lesions to the right parietal lobe (e.g., leading to hemispatial neglect) frequently result in deficits in spatial remapping. Research has demonstrated that recalibrating visual, proprioceptive a

Sensitivity to lexical stress in dyslexia: a case of cognitive not perceptual stress.

Sensitivity to lexical stress in adult German-speaking students with reading difficulty was investigated using minimal pair prepositional verbs whose meaning and syntax depend on the location of the stressed syllable. Two tests of stress perception were used: (i) a stress location task, where listeners indicated the location of the perceptually most prominent syllable, and (ii) a stress pattern identification task, where listeners indicated if the stress pattern was appropriate for its semantic frame. The students with reading difficulties performed worse than the normally reading students on

Missing in action: the effect of obstacle position and size on avoidance while reaching.

When reaching to objects, our hand and arm rarely collide with non-target objects, even if our workspace is cluttered. The simplicity of these actions hides what must be a relatively sophisticated obstacle avoidance system. Recent studies on patients with optic ataxia and visual form agnosia have demonstrated that obstacle avoidance is an automatic process, likely governed by the dorsal stream (Schindler et al. 2004; Rice et al. 2006). The current study sought to quantify how normal participants react to changes in the size and position of non-target objects in and around their workspace. In t

Working memory and strategies in syllogistic-reasoning tasks.

It has often been asserted that working-memory limitations are a major factor contributing to problem difficulty; for example, Johnson-Laird's (1983) mental-models theory appeals to working-memory limitations to explain the difficulty of syllogistic reasoning. However, few studies have directly explored working memory in problem solving in general or syllogistic reasoning in particular. This paper reports two studies. In the first, working-memory load was varied by presenting syllogistic tasks either verbally or visually (so that the premises were continuously available for inspection). A sign

Speech perception and the discrimination of brief auditory cues in reading disabled children.

The processing of speech and nonspeech sounds by 23 reading disabled children and their age- and sex-matched controls was examined in a task requiring them to identify and report the order of pairs of stimuli. Reading disabled children were impaired in making judgments with very brief tones and with stop consonant syllables at short interstimulus intervals (ISI's). They had no unusual difficulty with vowel stimuli, vowel stimuli in a white noise background, or very brief visual figures. Poor performance on the tones and stop consonants appears to be due to specific difficulty in processing ver

Association of personal and systemic factors on intrapartum risk perception and obstetric intervention rates: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Risk perception is fundamental to decision-making; therefore its exploration is essential to gaining a comprehensive understanding of the decision-making process for peripartum interventions. The aim of this study was to investigate associations between personal and systemic factors of the work setting and the risk perception of obstetric healthcare professionals, and in turn how this might influence decisions regarding obstetric interventions. METHODS: Case vignettes were used to measure risk perception. A quantitative cross-sectional online survey was performed within an explora

Specifying advantages of multi-modal cueing: Quantifying improvements with augmented tactile information.

This work examines how tactile cues, encoded with azimuth and distance information, compare with visual and speech cues on performance and mental workload in a target detection task. Two experiments are reported using a simulated environment in which targets were presented at varying azimuth and distance locations. In the first experiment, participants engaged targets both while stationary and while in motion using tactile, visual, or speech cues. A no cueing control was included. In the second multi-modal experiment, participants completed the same task using cue pairings. Performance metrics

Multisensory cues improve sensorimotor synchronisation.

Synchronising movements with events in the surrounding environment is an ubiquitous aspect of everyday behaviour. Often, information about a stream of events is available across sensory modalities. While it is clear that we synchronise more accurately to auditory cues than other modalities, little is known about how the brain combines multisensory signals to produce accurately timed actions. Here, we investigate multisensory integration for sensorimotor synchronisation. We extend the prevailing linear phase correction model for movement synchronisation, describing asynchrony variance in terms

First-order basis of second-order temporal loss in amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental visual disorder characterized by monocular visual impairment due to abnormal binocular experience in early childhood, with first-order (luminance-defined) and second-order (contrast-defined) processing deficits. While first-order temporal perception deficits in amblyopia are well-documented, the nature of second-order temporal deficits remains unclear, particularly whether they stem from intrinsic extrastriate dysfunction or secondary effects of first-order spatial impairments. This study investigated temporal perception deficits in anisometropic a

Mind the gap: temporal discrimination and dystonia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: One of the most widely studied perceptual measures of sensory dysfunction in dystonia is the temporal discrimination threshold (TDT) (the shortest interval at which subjects can perceive that there are two stimuli rather than one). However the elevated thresholds described may be due to a number of potential mechanisms as current paradigms test not only temporal discrimination but also extraneous sensory and decision-making parameters. In this study two paradigms designed to better quantify temporal processing are presented and a decision-making model is used to assess

Action, time and the basal ganglia.

The ability to control the speed of movement is compromised in neurological disorders involving the basal ganglia, a set of subcortical cerebral nuclei that receive prominent dopaminergic projections from the midbrain. For example, bradykinesia, slowness of movement, is a major symptom of Parkinson's disease, whereas rapid tics are observed in patients with Tourette syndrome. Recent experimental work has also implicated dopamine (DA) and the basal ganglia in action timing. Here, I advance the hypothesis that the basal ganglia control the rate of change in kinaesthetic perceptual variables. In

The role of the magnocellular pathway in serial deployment of visual attention.

Normal human visual function often demands detection of a target among a number of other objects cluttering the scene, such as when searching for a known face in a crowd. In these and similar tasks, the search performed is a serial one, with an attentional spotlight scanning the objects of the scene. We have investigated whether one of the afferent channels in vision, the colour-blind magnocellular pathway, is essential in such serial searches. We did this by using items that were isoluminant with the background but of a different colour, for which the magnocellular cells would be blind. The s
