Primary care practitioners in the pediatric setting treat children for numerous skin complaints. The most frequently seen dermatologic conditions are those that are persistent and cause children discomfort, such as atopic, contact seborrheic dermatitis and tinea infections. Familiarity with the presentation, pathophysiology, and treatment of these common skin conditions enables the practitioner to successfully manage these rashes.

Trichoscopy (hair and scalp dermoscopy) effectively supports differential diagnosis of various hair and scalp diseases. This paper focuses on four important hair diseases mainly occurring in children. Trichotillomania is the most relevant differential diagnosis of alopecia areata in childhood. Meticulous inspection and lack of telogen hairs in the trichogram from the margin of the lesion usually are sufficient for differentiation. We present a case record of patients with kerion Celsi observed in the Clinic of Dermatology, University of Cagliari (Italy) from 1981 to 1995.
