[The status of the application of optical coherence tomography angiography in nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy].

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a new technology of angiography which features multiple advantages over the traditional ones. It can provide a rapid and noninvasive approach to observing the vascular morphology and blood vessel density of the optic disc, peripapillary and macular area. Nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is an acute optic neuropathy characterized by a sudden, painless decrease in vision and a typical visual field defect. It has been widely accepted that the circulatory insufficiency of the optic nerve head (ONH) mainly supplied by the posterior ci

Imaging of macrophage dynamics with optical coherence tomography in anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) is a relatively common cause of visual loss and results from hypoperfusion of the small arteries of the anterior portion of the optic nerve. AION is the leading cause of sudden optic nerve related vision loss with approximately 10 cases per 100'000 in the population over 50 years. To date there is no established treatment for AION and therefore a better understanding of the events occurring at the level of the optic nerve head (ONH) would be important to design future therapeutic strategies. The optical properties of the eye allow imaging of the optic

Optical coherence tomography measurements in compressive optic neuropathy associated with dysthyroid orbitopathy.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to assess the influence of optic nerve compression on the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in eyes with acute and chronic dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON). METHODS: Patients with DON and healthy control subjects underwent peripapillary optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanning with the Cirrus HD-OCT. Patients were classified as acute (within 6 months from the onset of DON) versus chronic (6 months or more from the onset of DON) DON. The thickness of peripapillary RNFL was compared between eyes with acute and chronic DON and c

Optical coherence tomography findings in optic nerve pit maculopathy after vitrectomy.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to present a case of optic nerve pit maculopathy and reappraise the previous concepts regarding the pathways of the fluid and the development. METHODS: A 24-year-old man had an optic nerve pit maculopathy. The visual acuity was 20/50 in the affected eye. Optical coherence tomography showed a multilayered separation of the neurosensory retina, serous retinal detachment, and the optic nerve pit with no membrane on the optic nerve. After 2 months of observations, surgery was performed. RESULTS: Surgery included vitrectomy, the separation of the posterior h

Optic neuritis interferes with optical coherence tomography and magnetic resonance imaging correlations.

BACKGROUND: Retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thinning is associated with brain atrophy in multiple sclerosis (MS). An influence of optic neuritis is well documented but sparsely investigated. Recently, the retinal ganglion cell layer (GCL) has been shown to provide superior information regarding visual function and retinal neurodegeneration as compared with RNFL. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of white and grey matter brain volume with peripapillary RNFL and macular GCL in MS patients with and without a history of optic neuritis. METHODS: 63 patients with relapsing-remitting MS we

Optical Coherence Tomography Mapping of the Scattering Coefficient to Study the Skin Hydration Process under Optical Clearing.

INTRODUCTION: Skin hydration, which is defined by the hydration index and the spatial distribution of water, represents one of the key parameters reflecting the functional state of the skin. Although various optical methods have been proposed to study the hydration process, these techniques are often limited by a shallow probing depth, insufficient depth resolution, or low spatial and temporal resolution, which precludes a comprehensive assessment of the skin response to topical pharmaceutical agents. METHODS: We present an approach for the quantitative assessment and visualization of skin de

Image formation theory of optical coherence tomography with optical aberrations and its application to computational aberration correction.

Computational corrections of defocus and aberrations in optical coherence tomography (OCT) offers a promising approach to realize high-resolution imaging with deep imaging depth, but without additional high hardware costs. However, these techniques are not well understood owing to a lack of accurate theoretical models and investigation tools. The image formation theory for OCT with optical aberrations is thus formulated here. Based on this theory, a numerical simulation method is developed, and computational refocusing and computational aberration correction (CAC) methods are designed. The CAC

Optical attenuation coefficient decorrelation-based optical coherence tomography angiography for microvascular evaluation of Alzheimer's disease on mice.

SIGNIFICANCE: The deep cortical microvasculature is closely linked to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, tail artifacts from superficial cortical vessels often interfere with detecting deep vessels in optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) imaging. A more accurate method to assess deep cortical vasculature is crucial for understanding its relationship with AD onset. AIM: We aim to reduce superficial vessel artifacts in OCTA imaging and improve the visualization and analysis of deep cortical microvasculature in an AD mouse model. APPROACH: We introduced the optica

Assessment of Optical Attenuation and Skin Thickness in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients Using Optical Coherence Tomography.

Diabetes management often involves invasive blood glucose monitoring, which can be uncomfortable for patients. Non-invasive techniques like multiple μ-spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (mμSORS) offer a promising alternative. To provide clinical data supporting mμSORS, we conducted a clinical trial with 198 participants to evaluate mμSORS for non-invasive blood glucose measurement. Using Optical Coherence Tomography, we studied skin thickness and optical attenuation in 172 diabetic and 26 healthy subjects. Results showed thicker stratum corneum and stratum spinosum (SS) in diabetics. Epiderma

Comparison of composite and segmental methods for acquiring optical axial length with swept-source optical coherence tomography.

This study compared the optical axial length (AL) obtained by composite and segmental methods using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) devices, and demonstrated its effects on the post-operative refractive errors (RE) one month after cataract surgery. Conventional AL measured with the composite method used the mean refractive index. The segmented-AL method used individual refractive indices for each ocular medium. The composite AL (24.52 ± 2.03 mm) was significantly longer (P < 0.001) than the segmented AL (24.49 ± 1.97 mm) among a total of 374 eyes of 374 patients. Bland-Altma

Optical assessment of the in vivo tympanic membrane status using a handheld optical coherence tomography-based otoscope.

OBJECTIVE: Conventional otoscopes and oto-endoscopes, which are used to examine the tympanic membrane (TM), do not provide tomographic information. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) non-invasively reveals the depth-resolved internal microstructure of the TM with very high spatial resolution. We designed this study to examine the TMs with middle ear diseases using a handheld otoscope employing 860 nm spectral domain (SD)-OCT, combined with video camera and to demonstrate the clinical applicability of this system. DESIGN: A total of 120 patients with otologic symptoms were enrolled. TM images

Quantitative analysis of retinal layers' optical intensities on 3D optical coherence tomography for central retinal artery occlusion.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides not only morphological information but also information about layer-specific optical intensities, which may represent the underlying tissue properties. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively investigate the optical intensity of each retinal layers in central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). Twenty-nine CRAO cases at acute phase and 33 normal controls were included. Macula-centered 3D OCT images were segmented with a fully-automated Iowa Reference Algorithm into 10 layers. Layer-specific mean intensities were determined and compared between th
