Influence of Short Fiber- Reinforced Composites on Fracture Resistance of Single-Structure Restorations.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to determine the load-bearing capacity of anterior crowns prepared using two types of single-structure short fibre-reinforced composites (SFRCs). Furthermore, fracture toughness (FT), flexural strength (FS) and flexural modulus (FM) of tested composites were measured. METHODS: Seven groups of composite crowns were designed for an upper central incisor (n=8/group). Two groups were CAD/CAM fabricated made of Cerasmart 270 and experimental single-structure SFRC blocks. Two groups were 3D-printed made of GC Temp PRINT and Pro3dure GR-17 composites. Two groups were made of c

Impact of endodontic access design on the fracture resistance of zirconia mandibular molar crowns.

PURPOSE: This in vitro study aimed to evaluate and compare the fracture resistance of zirconia mandibular molar crowns with the traditional trapezoidal (TT) shaped access and three novel conservative access designs. The designs tested were the TT, conservative trapezoidal (CT), ultraconservative circular (UC), and two conservative single accesses (TC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mandibular right first molar typodont tooth was prepared for a full coverage zirconia crown. The preparation was scanned, and a total of 56 monolithic zirconia crowns were milled. Resin dies were printed for each restor

Radiolucent lesion of an unerupted mandibular molar.

A coronal radiolucent lesion of an unerupted and partially developed mandibular second molar was coincidentally found during a routine radiographic orthodontic examination of a generally healthy 9-year old girl. The size of the lesion increased continuously during a 2-year observation period. Histologic examination after extracting the tooth proved the lesion to be an idiopathic external coronal resorption. In a review of the literature, we found no original research on the subject. However, the number of case reports suggests that idiopathic external coronal resorptions are quite common in yo

Conventional endodontics and the operating microscope.

Patients are increasingly wishing to undergo conventional endodontic treatment rather than to risk the loss of a tooth. Endodontic treatment in teeth that have been previously restored with extensive intracoronal or extracoronal restorations are often difficult to treat. The orientation of the root canals to the crown of the tooth may be lost, and this may often be compounded by the deposition of reparative dentin in the pulp chamber. The operating microscope allows better visualization of the working field, ensuring that the anatomy of the tooth is more readily inspected. This greatly enhance

Performance of PEEK based telescopic crowns, a comparative study.

OBJECTIVE: Telescopic crowns are suitable components of partial dentures to efficiently anchor dental supra-structures to teeth or dental implants and achieve high chewing performance and wear comfort. Usually alloy- or metal-based structures are used for the primary and the secondary crowns. The advantage is the possibility to produce precise structures with a high perfection and sufficient friction force, but the disadvantage is the corrosion instability. The recent introduction of zirconia ceramics has enabled the fabrication of ceramic primary crowns, thus reducing corrodibility. The novel

Periodontal status of anterior teeth following clinical crown lengthening by minimally traumatic controlled surgical extrusion.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The number of fractured anterior teeth following trauma has been increasing while not every patient is able to afford a dental implant instead of maintaining the injured tooth. Thus, a tooth conservation solution is required to place an aesthetic and functional restoration without biologic width violation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of minimally traumatic controlled surgical extrusion in fractured anterior teeth crown lengthening by assessing the periodontal status through clinical examination and radiographs. METHODS: This longitudinal observatio

Miniscrew-assisted single-tooth distraction osteogenesis to align an ankylosed infraoccluded maxillary central incisor: A case report.

The ankylosis of permanent incisors is usually caused by trauma. In a growing patient, the ankylosed tooth fails to move along with the vertical growth of the remaining alveolar process, which results in an infraoccluded tooth, gingival margin disharmony and unaesthetic smile. This case report presents an 23-year-old female patient whose maxillary right central incisor (tooth number 11) had been traumatised eight years earlier. A vertical discrepancy of about 4 mm was exhibited between teeth 11 and 12. To reposition the crown and gingival margins of the ankylosed tooth to an ideal level, single

[Clinical and imaging features of 36 odontogenic keratocysts associated with an impacted tooth].

PURPOSE: To analyse the imaging features of odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) associated with an impacted tooth. METHODS: Clinical and radiological data of 235 cases with OKCs were respectively investigated, with emphasis on imaging features of 36 OKCs, which were associated with an unerupted tooth. RESULTS: In 36 cases of OKCs associated with an impacted tooth, the ratio of male to female was 1.77:1, and molar-ramus was involved in 26 cases (72.22%). OKCs in association with an unerupted tooth occurred mostly in patients ranging from 20 to 30 years (19 cases, 52.8%). There were 27 cases (75%)

Aesthetic management of a complicated crown fracture: a multidisciplinary approach.

A predictable aesthetic restoration is not limited to the restored teeth; it has to include the gingival unit and its interface with the teeth involved. Orthodontic forced eruption may be a suitable approach without risking the aesthetic appearance in tooth fracture below the gingival attachment or alveolar bone crest. It is a well-documented clinical method for altering the relation between a non-restorable tooth and its attachment apparatus, elevating sound tooth material from within the alveolar socket to create a ferrule effect which is considered to be crucial for the optimal biomechanica

[Enamel structure of atypically formed human teeth].

Using light and scanning electron microscopy thin epoxide processed sections of 12 impacted third molars, one molar developed in odontogenic follicular cyst and one tooth-like teratoma were studied. It was established that the 4 impacted teeth and the tooth developed in odontogenic follicular cyst had obvious signs of enamel damage in the form of erosion in the crown fissures. The features of enamel alteration make it possible to interpret the changes as carious process which apparently has endogenous origin. Tooth-like teratoma extracted from ovarian dermoid cyst looked like canine and inciso

Treatment Modalities of Uncomplicated Crown Fracture in Anterior Maxillary Permanent Teeth: A Systematic Review.

AIM: Several treatment modalities have been used to restore crown fractures in case of uncomplicated crown fractures. Although many treatment modalities have been reported, there is no consensus on which one has the best results in terms of success and durability. This systematic review of treatment modalities in uncomplicated crown fractures aims to provide the most common and successful treatment modality for each patient's unique needs, balancing conservation, aesthetics, and long-term durability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar) were s

Characteristics of periodontal mechanoreceptors supplying reimplanted canine teeth in cats.

These characteristics were investigated 12 weeks and one year after tooth reimplantation. Electrophysiological recordings were made from single mechanosensitive units dissected from the inferior alveolar nerve and each unit was characterized by applying forces to the crown of the tooth. The characteristics were compared with those of receptors innervating normal teeth. The periodontal mechanoreceptors supplying teeth reimplanted 12 weeks earlier responded to applied forces over a narrower range of directions, had higher force thresholds, lower discharge frequencies and adapted more rapidly tha

Multiple traumatic injury to maxillary incisors in an adolescent female: treatment outcome with two years follow-up.

Number, type and severity of dental injuries per patient differ according to the patient's age and the cause of accident. The trauma group resulting from pedestrian-, bicycle-, and car-related injuries is usually dominated by multiple dental injuries, injuries to the supporting bone and soft-tissue injuries. This report describes a case of a 16.2-year-old female who suffered traumatic injuries to her permanent maxillary incisors after a car accident. Concussion of tooth 12, extrusive luxation of tooth 11, avulsion of tooth 21 and subluxation with complicated crown fracture of tooth 22 were obs

Management of tooth resorption.

A correct diagnosis and an understanding of the aetiology and dynamics of the processes involved in tooth resorption is critical to effective management. Tooth resorptions can be classified as: (1) trauma induced; (2) infection induced; or (3) hyperplastic invasive. Some transient trauma induced resorptions require no treatment but must be carefully monitored to check that there are no complicating issues such as infection. In cases of trauma induced replacement resorption, a multidisciplinary approach is usually necessary to ensure an optimal long-term solution. Infection induced tooth resorp

Pulp size in molars: underestimation on radiographs.

The aim was to determine whether radiographs provide a clinically useful indication of pulp size in diseased/restored human first molar teeth, and to investigate accessibility of pulp tissue for diagnostic testing using laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF). Extracted teeth of known age were collected. Restorative materials were removed and teeth with evidence of pulp exposures excluded. Fifty-six teeth were radiographed from buccal and mesial aspects, and then their crowns were sectioned axiobuccolingually and photographed. Images were digitally scanned and measurements made of the total pulp area (a
