The dental health status of dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: The number of patients with kidney failure who require dialysis is growing by 10% to 15% annually, and the likelihood that dentists will treat such patients is also increasing. The dental care of patients undergoing dialysis can be complex, given the prevalence of comorbid conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, renal osteodystrophy and immunosuppression, the presence of nondental prosthetic devices, and the use of antihypertensives and anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents. These patients appear to be predisposed to a variety of dental problems such as periodontal disease, narr

Conceptual approach to complex rehabilitation of a patient with bulimia nervosa: a case report.

This case report presents the clinical and technical protocol involved in treating a 32-year-old patient whose teeth and dental appearance were severely compromised as a result of bulimia nervosa. Patients suffering from this disorder have a high incidence of erosion of dentin and enamel, which over time may cause loss of vertical dimension. This has an impact on the patient's overall appearance, with effects such as sunken lips, lack of support, and creases at the corners of the mouth.

Acute periodontal lesions.

This review provides updates on acute conditions affecting the periodontal tissues, including abscesses in the periodontium, necrotizing periodontal diseases and other acute conditions that cause gingival lesions with acute presentation, such as infectious processes not associated with oral bacterial biofilms, mucocutaneous disorders and traumatic and allergic lesions. A periodontal abscess is clinically important because it is a relatively frequent dental emergency, it can compromise the periodontal prognosis of the affected tooth and bacteria within the abscess can spread and cause infection

Effect of erosive conditions on different sealant materials used in paediatric dentistry.

To evaluate the effect of acidic challenge on erosion depth and topographic characteristics of different materials used as occlusal sealants. Two hundred specimens of five sealant materials (Fuji IX, Ketac Molar, Fuji II, Equia and Clinpro) and forty bovine teeth enamel samples (control) were prepared and exposed to acidic challenge. The specimens were immersed in four different solutions (orange juice, coke drink, citric acid or distilled water) under mildly shaken conditions for 3 days. The erosion depth profiles were measured using a profilometer and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Two-

The effect of air-abrasion on the susceptibility of sound enamel to acid challenge.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of air-abrasion using three abrasive powders, on the susceptibility of sound enamel to an acid challenge. METHODS: 40 human enamel samples were flattened, polished and assigned to 4 experimental groups (n=10); a: alumina air-abrasion, b: sodium bicarbonate air-abrasion, c: bioactive glass (BAG) air-abrasion and d: no surface treatment (control). White light confocal profilometry was used to measure the step height enamel loss of the abraded area within each sample at three stages; after sample preparation (baseline), after air-abrasion and finally after expos

Oral health status, salivary factors and microbial analysis in patients with active gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

AIM: To present a complex oral health status including salivary factors, microbial analysis and periodontal and hygiene indices in patients with active gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). Return of stomach contents is quite common in cases of gastro-oesophageal reflux. Pathological acid movement from the stomach into the oesophagus and oral cavity may lead to a development of dental erosion. Long-lasting untreated GORD may damage hard dental and periodontal tissues and alter the oral microbial environment. The quality and amount of the saliva play an important role in hard and soft oral

Oral implications in children with gastroesophageal reflux disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To emphasize oral complications in children with gastroesophageal reflux disease. Interest of pediatricians to conduct an orodental examination or to include a dental examination performed by a dentist should be encouraged, as dental erosion, for instance, may be present in these children. RECENT FINDINGS: Dental caries, dental erosion, mucosal lesions and oral bacterial load have been studied extensively in children with gastroesophageal reflux disease, but there is no sound consensus about the impact of gastroesophageal reflux disease on oral health parameters. SUMMARY:

To assess the effect of selected locally available beverages on salivary pH, flow rate, and oral clearance rate among adults.

AIM: The aim of this study is to assess the effect of selected locally available beverages on salivary pH, flow rate, and oral clearance rate among adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A quantitative diagnostic method for dental caries would improve oral health, which directly affects the quality of life. The pH scale measures how acidic or basic a solution is, with 7 being neutral. When the pH of plaque drops below normal, or <5.5, the acidity starts to dissolve minerals and destroy the tooth's enamel. This clinical trial will be conducted on 40 subjects. Test beverages will be Red Bull, mixed fru

Skeletal phenotype of mandibuloacral dysplasia associated with mutations in ZMPSTE24.

Mandibuloacral dysplasia (MAD) is a rare recessively inherited premature aging disease characterized by skeletal and metabolic anomalies. It is part of the spectrum of diseases called laminopathies and results from mutations in genes regulating the synthesis of the nuclear laminar protein, lamin A. Homozygous or compound heterozygous mutations in the LMNA gene, which encodes both the precursor protein prelamin A and lamin C, are the commonest cause of MAD type A. In a few cases of MAD type B, mutations have been identified in the ZMPSTE24 gene encoding a zinc metalloproteinase important in the

Contemporary Classification and Diagnostic Pathways for Common Gingival and Alveolar Ridge Lesions.

Oral lesions can be observed in different locations in the oral cavity, including periodontal supporting structures, gingiva, and alveolar ridge. Ranging from benign to potentially malignant lesions, these lesions can be described from various perspectives, including duration, size, origin, number, and clinical characteristics. Early diagnosis of these lesions can highly affect treatment procedures and outcomes, while preserving tooth-supporting tissues. This review aimed to introduce a decision tree for gingival and alveolar ridge lesions. According to the search strategy, a thorough electron

Future Perspectives in Pediatric Dentistry: Where are We Now and where are We Heading?

UNLABELLED: Oral diseases in children are still a major public health problem that can negatively impact parents and their children's quality of life. Even though oral diseases are largely preventable, initial signs of them can be detected in the 1st year of life, and its severity might increase with time if no preventive measures are taken. Based on this, we aim to discuss "where is pediatric dentistry now?" and "where is pediatric dentistry heading?" Early life oral health conditions are a good predictor of oral health status in adolescence, adulthood, and elderly people. A healthy childhood

The Combined Impact on Condylar Changes of Sex and Cortication on Mandibular Condyle: A Binary Logistic Regression Analysis.

Introduction: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders encompass a wide range of conditions impacting the joint and its surrounding structures, often leading to pain, dysfunction, and structural alterations. Understanding the predictors of condylar changes is crucial for early diagnosis and effective management, particularly in patients experiencing significant functional limitations. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the combined impact of sex and cortication classification on mandibular condylar changes, as detected by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), to identify key predictors for

Oral manifestations of eating disorders in adolescent patients. A review.

AIM: Eating disorders (ED) are a group of psychopathological disorders that affect the patient's relationship with food and his own body and that are manifested mainly in adolescence and in young-adult age. ED include anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and other eating disorders as classified in the DMS-V. ED can result in several oral and dental manifestations that often occur in the early stages of ED and may allow early detection. The aim of the study is to describe the different oral and dental manifestations in patients with ED in order to offer a classification for their identif
