There are no published data of manometric studies of pyloric motor function in patients with infantile hypertropic pyloric stenosis (IHPS). The present study attempted to examine the characteristics of motor abnormality of the pylorus in five children with IHPS. Using a transducer-built-in manometric catheter cannulated through the pylorus under fluoroscopy, the pressure in the pyloric canal was recorded continuously over 3 h during fasting. Clusters of high-amplitude spastic contractions of over 300 mmHg were recorded at intervals. The frequency was 1-3/min (mean 1.7 cpm) and the duration was

The physical difficulties associated with cystoscopy and cystometry in the spinal cord injury patient led to a clinical trial of synchronous cystoscopy and cystometry in these individuals. Following a disappointing experience with external transducer methodology, a recently available fiberoptic microtransducer system was used and an effective system was developed. A total of 20 individuals with spinal cord injury underwent a standard water cystometrogram on an examination table followed by synchronous flexible cystoscopy and cystometry using a 5F fiberoptic microtransducer while seated in a ch

Experiments were performed to determine some mechanical properties of the spinal cord-meningeal (SCM) complex and its tethering elements with reference to factors contributing to contact pressure of an anterior mass on the SCM complex with spinal fracture and the development of some means to relieve the pressure. Measurements were made using a combined microload cell and displacement transducer that was passed posteriorly through a hole drilled in vertebra T12 through the interpedicular space and contacted the cord. Loss of nerve roots and anterior ligaments as dural tethers in the lumbar regi

CO2 sensitivity in the airways and the general skin surface of the bullfrog under urethane anesthesia or without anesthesia was investigated. Pressure in the buccal cavity as well as blood pressure in the sciatic artery were measured with a differential or a straingauge transducer. Air containing 2--14% CO2 was introduced into the regions as given below. (1) The nose and the body surface, both regions were separated from each other and independently exposed to CO2. (2) The larynx-lungs, the buccal cavity-lungs, the naso-buccal cavity separated from the airways at the glottis, and the internal

The sonographic Murphy sign is defined as the presence of maximal tenderness elicited by direct pressure of the transducer over a sonographically localized gallbladder. The reported prevalence of this sign is more than 95% in patients with acute cholecystitis. In this series of 18 patients with pathologically proved gangrenous cholecystitis, the sonographic Murphy sign was positive in only six (33%). Clinical examination showed a positive Murphy sign in eight patients (44%), diffuse abdominal pain in nine patients (50%), and no pain in one patient (6%). Other sonographic findings included peri

Diazoxide is a potent antihypertensive agent due to its peripheral vasodilator action. For this reason it is used in the management of hypertensive crises in pregnancy. To assess the effects of an intravenous bolus injection of diazoxide on maternal and fetal hemodynamics an experimental study was performed in 11 chronically instrumented pregnant sheep. In six ewes hypertension was induced by surgical removal of one kidney and reduction of arterial blood flow to the remaining kidney (one-kidney renovascular hypertension). The other five ewes remained normotensive. In a second operation, one we

BACKGROUND: Phasic venous flow variation with respiration is surrounded by controversy and not well understood. The current concept assigns a major role to the "abdominal pump." According to this model, inspiratory increases in abdominal pressure compress the vena cava, increasing its internal venous pressure and propelling blood upstream. Some have assigned a secondary role to the "thoracic pump," with the negative intrapleural pressure aiding blood flow toward the heart. The aim of the present study was to examine the phasic changes in flow, pressure, and volume in the central veins and name

PURPOSE: To our knowledge the physiological mechanisms involved in sexual intercourse have not been completely explored. We hypothesized that vaginal distention induced by penile thrusting may affect the function of the bladder and urethra. To verify this supposition we assessed the effect of vaginal distention on vesical and urethral pressure. No relevant reports in the literature were identified.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The response of vesical and urethral pressure to vaginal distention was recorded in 26 healthy women volunteers with a mean age plus or minus standard deviation of 36.7 +/- 9

Increasing levels of resistance to tetracycline and to a number of other unrelated antibiotics, including chloramphenicol, beta-lactams, puromycin, and nalidixic acid, occurred in Escherichia coli after 50 to 200 generations of growth in the presence of subinhibitory concentrations of tetracycline or chloramphenicol. In the absence of selective pressure, resistances fell to low levels within 100 generations of growth. This amplification of resistance was observed in laboratory and naturally occurring E. coli strains as well as in polA and recA strains. With the exception of previously identifi

Patients with cervical spinal cord injuries (CSCI) experience hypotension mainly caused by attenuated total peripheral resistance. Some physicians and nurses believe that this peripheral blood pressure (PBP) decrease in patients with CSCI results in the formation of pressure injuries. We hypothesized that the measurement of PBP, such as arteriole and capillary pressure, could be a simple and efficient means of detecting skin and deep tissue damage in patients with CSCI. However, PBP in the skin has not been measured in patients with CSCI. The purpose of this study was to investigate PBP in pat

The auditory evoked potential technique has been used for the past 30 years to evaluate the hearing ability of fish. The resulting audiograms are typically presented in terms of sound pressure (dB re. 1 μPa) with the particle motion (dB re. 1 m s(-2)) component largely ignored until recently. When audiograms have been presented in terms of particle acceleration, one of two approaches has been used for stimulus characterisation: measuring the pressure gradient between two hydrophones or using accelerometers. With rare exceptions these values are presented from experiments using a speaker as the

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of electroacupuncturing (EA) zusanli points on levels of basic hemodynamics, lactate, and cytokines in dogs with hemorrhagic shock. Thirty healthy dogs were randomly divided into 5 groups: sham hemorrhagic shocked group, hemorrhagic shocked group, EA group, nonacupuncturing group, and EA after vagotomy group. Zusanli points were electroacupunctured with constant voltage (10-15 V, 30 Hz) for 30 minutes immediately after the shock models were established. Before the stimulation, a blood pressure transducer was implanted into the right femoral a

Previously, we found evidence that radial artery pressure wave forms in newborns represent central aortic wave forms, provided that pressure is measured with adequate accuracy. Therefore, we postulated that the neonatal radial artery wave form, like the adult aortic wave form, may contribute to cardiovascular diagnosis. We investigated whether radial artery wave forms in infants suffering from patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) are different from the wave forms as seen without the presence of PDA. We studied 34 newborn infants with a radial artery line and with the possible clinical diagnosis of P

The fiberoptic device is a relatively new type of intracranial pressure (ICP) monitor which appears to offer certain advantages over conventional monitoring systems, particularly its ability to measure brain parenchymal pressures. This study was undertaken to analyze the accuracy and drift characteristics of the fiberoptic device and to compare pressures in the subdural, intraparenchymal, and intraventricular compartments. The device was accurate to +/- 3 mm Hg over a 0- to 30-mm Hg range in vitro. The maximum daily drift was +/- 2.5 mm Hg, with an average daily drift of +/- 0.6 mm Hg and an a

The prevention of diabetic foot ulcers remains a critical challenge. This study evaluates a smart compression sock designed to address this issue by integrating temperature, plantar pressure, and blood oxygen sensors and monitoring data recorded by these sensors. The smart sock, developed with input from a certified Pedorthist, was tested on 20 healthy adult participants aged 16 to 53. It includes four temperature sensors and pressure sensors at common ulcer sites (first and fifth metatarsal heads, calcaneus, and hallux), and a blood oxygen sensor on the hallux. The sensors are monitored, and

BACKGROUND: A central venous catheter enables the measurement of hemodynamic variations, such as accurate central venous pressure; catheter malposition may induce potentially fatal complications. This case report describes a rare central venous catheter tip malposition in the right internal mammary artery.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old Japanese woman who presented with severe pneumonia secondary to scleroderma was treated under ventilator support because of acute respiratory failure. A right central venous catheter was inserted using a landmark technique to monitor central venous pressure

Intracranial pressure (ICP) is derived from cerebral blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulatory dynamics and can be affected in the course of many diseases of the central nervous system. Monitoring of ICP requires an invasive transducer, although some attempts have been made to measure it non-invasively. Because of its dynamic nature, instant CSF pressure measurement using the height of a fluid column via lumbar puncture may be misleading. An averaging over 30 minutes should be the minimum, with a period of overnight monitoring in conscious patients providing the optimal standard. Compute

Nine fresh frozen cadaveric shoulders were used to examine the changes in intraarticular pressure (IAP) of the shoulder joint and the position of the humeral head under various loads to determine the relationship between these parameters. All the soft tissues superficial to the rotator cuff were removed. The position of the humerus relative to the scapula was monitored using an electromagnetic tracking system before and after venting the capsule with 0, 0.5, and 1.0 kg of load applied to the humerus inferiorly in addition to the weight of the arm. Simultaneously, the IAP was monitored using a

PURPOSE: Total and partial proximal catheter occlusions are well-known complications of ventriculoperitoneal shunts (VPS). When this occurs, surgeons often attempt to perform a shunt tap. However, the degree of obstruction in a proximal catheter that ultimately leads to shunt malfunction is unknown.
METHODS: We developed a benchtop model to simulate proximal catheter occlusion with two hydrostatic reservoirs connected by a VPS catheter system. The Centurion compass device was used to measure pressure across the valve digitally. Wires of varying diameters (equalling different occlusion percent

Data on urethral catheter related injuries is sparse. In this study we aimed to characterise urethral diametric strain and urinary catheter inflation pressure thresholds that precede human urethral trauma during urethral catheterisation (UC). Human urethras were obtained from patients undergoing male to female gender reassignment surgery [(n = 9; age 40 ± 13.13 (range: 18-58)) years]. 12Fr urinary catheters were secured in the bulbar urethra and the catheter's anchoring balloon was inflated with a syringe pump apparatus. Urethral diametric strain and balloon pressure were characterised with vi
