The public health importance of African trypanosomiasis in north east Zambia.

A survey for sleeping sickness (Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense) in villages in the northern Luangwa valley found a point prevalence of parasitaemia of 5.8 per thousand; the incidence of the disease was estimated at about 1% per annum. None of the cases found had sought treatment and pre-symptomatic cases may represent an important reservoir of infection to others. Other frequent parasitemias in the population included malaria (P. falciparum, P. malariae and P. ovale) which is hyperendemic and Dipetalonema perstans.

A quantification of the risk of trypanosomiasis infection to cattle on the south Kenya coast.

The number of trypanosome-infected bites received by cattle grazed around an 8 ha area of forest harbouring a semi-isolated population of Glossina pallidipes Austen was estimated. The absolute size of the tsetse population was determined by mark-release-recapture techniques, the tsetse host range by the identification of blood-meals, and trypanosome infection rates by dissection of samples of tsetse. Feeding frequency was estimated and the number of cattle present was known. It was estimated that each cow received, from G. pallidipes, one infective inoculum of T. congolense every 5.8 days duri

Evidence for depletion of Ia+ macrophages and associated immunosuppression in African trypanosomiasis.

The percentage of Ia antigen-bearing (Ia+) macrophages was significantly lower in mice infected with Trypanosoma rhodesiense than in normal … animals to process antigens and may therefore account in part for the immunosuppression observed in trypanosomiasis.

Coinfection with Schistosoma mansoni Enhances Disease Severity in Human African Trypanosomiasis.

INTRODUCTION: Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) and schistosomiasis are neglected parasitic diseases found in the African continent. This study was conducted to determine how primary infection with Schistosoma mansoni affects HAT disease progression with a secondary infection with Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense (T.b.r) in a mouse model. METHODS: Female BALB-c mice (6-8 weeks old) were randomly divided into four groups of 12 mice each. The different groups were infected with Schistosoma mansoni (100 cercariae) and Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense (5.0 × 104) separately or together. Twenty-one …

Reemergence of Human African Trypanosomiasis Caused by Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, Ethiopia.

We report 4 cases of human African trypanosomiasis that occurred in Ethiopia in 2022, thirty years after the last previously reported case in the country. Two of 4 patients died before medicine became available. We identified the infecting parasite as Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense. Those cases imply human African trypanosomiasis has reemerged.

Clinical management of East African trypanosomiasis in South Africa: Lessons learned.

BACKGROUND: East African trypanosomiasis is an uncommon, potentially lethal disease if not diagnosed and treated in a timely manner. South Africa, as a centre for emergency medical evacuations from much of sub-Saharan Africa, receives a high proportion of these patients, mostly tourists and expatriate residents. METHODS: The cases of East African trypanosomiasis patients evacuated to South Africa, for whom diagnostic and clinical management advice was provided over the years 2004-2018, were reviewed, using the authors' own records and those of collaborating clinicians. RESULTS: Twenty-one ca…

Animal African Trypanosomiasis in Nigeria: A long way from elimination/eradication.

Animal African Trypanosomiasis (AAT) is a disease of livestock that directly hinders livestock production and therefore impedes the socio-economic development of sub-Saharan Africa. The establishment of the Pan-African Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Eradication Campaign (PATTEC) was to enhance the goal of elimination and eradication of tsetse flies and AAT from endemic countries in Africa. In order to achieve AAT eradication, a five-step progressive control pathway (PCP) model has been proposed. The data presented in this report demonstrates that Nigeria is highly endemic of AAT and that it is yet…
