Tuberculosis (TB) represents a major problem in developing countries. Diagnosis is often difficult and mainly relies on clinical criteria and simple laboratory examinations, as cultural methods and molecular biology are not available in most health facilities. In order to evaluate the reliability of clinical criteria to suggest pulmonary TB, a prospective survey was conducted in Wolisso Hospital, South-West Shewa region, Ethiopia. During the period from April 2006 to September 2008, data from 117 consecutive patients from which the diagnosis of TB was made by either positive sputum examination

Pulmonary sequestration is a relatively rare malformation. The incidence of common pyogenic infection in this anomaly is very high. We describe a non-symptomatic, 19-year-old man who was misdiagnosed with left lower lobe pneumonia, which was treated with antibiotics for nearly one month. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) with multiplanar reconstruction showed an aberrant artery originated from the left side of the descending aorta, and went through the infiltration of the left lower lobe. The patient underwent surgical removal of the affected lobe. Microscopy demonstrated resected seq

INTRODUCTION: Amyloidosis is characterized by tissue deposits of amyloid material. Secondary amyloidosis can occur as a sequel to pulmonary tuberculosis over a relatively long period. However, this was not the case with our patient. Subsequently we conducted a literature review to try to explain the unusual course of AL amyloidosis in our patient.
CASE REPORT: A 36- year-old patient was admitted to our department for investigation of haemoptysis. A diagnosis of primary pulmonary tuberculosis was made and antituberculous treatment was started. On the second day of treatment, a haematoma appear

We report an unusual association of pulmonary tuberculosis with moyamoya syndrome in a 30-year-old Filipino female who was admitted to our hospital with a 1-week history of fever and cough. Chest X-ray showed widespread bilateral consolidation with cavity, whereas sputum was positive for acid fast bacilli (AFB). Two weeks after starting antituberculous treatment, the patient developed two episodes of loss of consciousness, which were unwitnessed. Urgent brain computed tomography (CT) showed multiple infarctions, suggesting vasculitis. The electroencephalogram showed epileptic discharges. Magne

Burkholderia pseudomallei is the causative agent of melioidosis. It is endemic in South East Asian countries and North Australia. Sporadic cases of melioidosis have been reported from several parts of South India. Melioidosis may manifest as chronic pneumonia mimicking tuberculosis and generally be seen as a single entity. We report the first case of melioidosis and pulmonary tuberculosis co-infection in a diabetic patient. The causative agents were identified using standard methods and the patient recovered after completion of the recommended antibiotic therapy. Melioidosis is an emerging inf

We describe a 32-year-old woman suspected of having pulmonary tuberculosis due to abnormal shadows found on her chest x-ray in a community health examination in September 2002. However, she consistently refused further examinations and treatment. In January 2005, she complained of a cough and sputum, by October she developed diarrhea, and by December a sore throat and fever. She was admitted to our hospital on January 23, 2006. Her chest radiograph revealed multiple thin-walled cystic lesions and infiltrative shadows in both upper lobes of the lung, a giant thin-walled cystic lesion in the sup

OBJECTIVES: We sought to compare the diagnostic yields of acid-fast bacilli smears and Mycobacterium tuberculosis cultures in terms of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and histologic examination of transbronchial lung biopsy specimens for pulmonary tuberculosis by using bronchoscopy with versus without endobronchial ultrasonography in patients with negative acid-fast bacilli smears or no sputum production.
METHODS: From June 2005 to July 2006, a total of 451 patients were given diagnoses of and treated for pulmonary tuberculosis in a university-affiliated hospital. Among them, 121 patients who re

Routine X-ray examination indicated that the rate of cavernous and fibrocavernous tuberculosis was 21.4 and 25.9%, respectively. Computed tomography (CT) showed that the ratio of patients with cavernous tuberculosis to those with fibrocavernous one changed and was equal to 14.3 and 33.0%, respectively. The number of patients diagnosed as having fibrocavernous tuberculosis increased. According to the traditional studies, the number of patients with one lobe being affected turned out to be higher. Accordingly, that of patients with involvement of the whole lung or two lungs proved to be underest

OBJECTIVE: Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is a common worldwide infection and a medical and social problem causing high mortality and morbidity, especially in developing countries. The traditional imaging concept of primary and reactivation TB has been recently challenged, and radiologic features depend on the level of host immunity rather than the elapsed time after the infection. We aimed to elaborate the new concept of the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary TB, to review the characteristic imaging findings of various forms of pulmonary TB, and to assess the role of CT in the diagnosis and ma

BACKGROUND: An aging population, increased use of immunosuppressive therapy and an increase in patients with risk factors for tuberculosis have induced changes in the clinical features of pulmonary tuberculosis in Japan.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate transitional changes in the clinical features of recent patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.
METHODS: This study analyzed 820 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis who were culture positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the Kawasaki Medical School Hospital and ten associated community hospitals between January 1986 and December 2005 (406 patient

Tuberculosis is an important cause of mortality due to its high prevalence, considering that one third of the worlds population is infected with the tuberculosis bacillus. We report the first case of carcinomatous lymphangitis associated with active pulmonary tuberculosis. Carcinomatous lymphangitis is a rare event that may be confounded with tuberculosis because of its radiographic and clinical characteristics.

This case report describes the history of a patient with pulmonary tuberculosis. As part of the diagnostic work-up a transthoracic biopsy was performed which resulted in a lung collapse. After one month of standard therapy for tuberculosis, the patient was admitted to our hospital for a clinical and surgical re-evaluation. Microbiological examination showed the presence of Aspergillus niger and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Treatment with AmBisome, ciprofloxacin and imipenem was started: the patient responded well with good clinical improvement. After 5 months of anti-tuberculous therapy, culture of

OBJECTIVE: As complications of tuberculosis are frequent in infancy, correct diagnosis of tuberculosis in infants is important. The purposes of this study are to summarize radiographic and CT findings of pulmonary tuberculosis in infants and to determine the radiologic features frequently seen in infants with this disease.
CONCLUSION: Frequent radiologic findings of pulmonary tuberculosis in infants are mediastinal or hilar lymphadenopathy with central necrosis and air-space consolidations, especially masslike consolidations with low-attenuation areas or cavities within the consolidation. Dis

Endocrine responses during chronic infections such as lung tuberculosis are poorly characterized. Hormonal changes are likely to occur since some of the cytokines produced during this disease could affect endocrine mechanisms that, in turn, influence the course of infectious/inflammatory processes. A main purpose of this work was to study endocrine responses involving pituitary, adrenal, gonadal, and thyroid hormones in parallel to IFN-gamma, IL-10, and IL-6 levels in tuberculosis patients with different degree of pulmonary involvement. We have also studied whether products derived from periph

The role of humoral response in immunity to tuberculosis (TB) is unclear, and clinical studies have yield inconsistent conclusions. The aim of this study was to evaluate number of the lymphocytes B, concentrations of immunoglobulins A, G, M (IgA, IgG, IgM), circulating immune complexes (KI), components C3 and C4 of complement, the expression of Fc and C3 receptors on monocytes isolated from peripheral blood. We performed evaluation in four groups: healthy volunteers (n = 24), patients with active tuberculosis before treatment (n = 36), TB patients after 2-month therapy (n = 20), and patients w

60 medical reports of patients with combination of pulmonary and urogenital organs tuberculosis were analyzed. Our study has shown that with heightening sickness rate of all forms of tuberculosis including pulmonary tuberculosis one can notice a slight rise of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. It can be explained first of all by difficulty in diagnosing extrapulmonary tuberculosis and absence of professional watchfulness to a possibility of combination of pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis. For example, in 45.3% of all cases with no positive effect of antibiotic therapy wasn't taken into acc
