OBJECTIVES: To compare personality characteristics in duodenal ulcer patients and patients with ulcer-like dyspepsia from the primary health sector with duodenal ulcer patients from a hospital and to evaluate the relationship of the personality characteristics to the course of the diseases.
DESIGN: A prospective study using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) with retesting of a subgroup of patients after a median observation period of 14 months.
SETTING: Departments of Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology, Hvidovre University Hospital, and the primary health sector in Ro…

We present the case of an 83-year-old woman with leg ulcers who was diagnosed with sarcoidosis. This case highlights the importance for clinicians to consider ulcerative sarcoidosis when encountering patients with leg ulcers along with hilar adenopathy, uveitis, elevated serum angiotensin-converting enzyme, and histopathological findings of epithelioid cell granulomas.

BACKGROUND: Necrobiosis lipoidica (NL) is complicated by ulceration in up to 35% of cases.
METHODS: Retrospective study of patients with NL seen at our institution between January 1, 1992, and May 25, 2021, was conducted. Ulcerated NL (UNL, n = 83) and non-ulcerated NL (NUNL, n = 233) groups were compared.
RESULTS: Twenty-six percent (83/316) of patients with NL experienced ulceration. UNL was significantly more likely to be painful (52% vs. 36%, P = 0.01), was more likely to have a lesion-associated cutaneous malignancy (7% vs. 0%, P < 0.001), and had a larger median size (7 vs. 5 cm, P = 0…

The lower extremity vascular ulcers currently represent a major public health problem, particularly because of different situations: the chronic nature of the injury, a poor response to treatment, recurrence rates, high absenteeism, poor training in some cases of the health staff that treats, etc. Lower extremity ulcers mean a serious personal, family, health and social problem, with a significant expenditure of human and material resources. Since the prevalence and incidence of lower extremity vascular ulcers is high worldwide, it is necessary to go into detail about the knowledge of the epid…

This report describes a 78-year old male patient with a chronic venous ulcer on his left leg for the past 24 years, complicated by a squamous-cell carcinoma. After staging of the disease, the treatment administered was amputation of the leg above the knee. Marjolin's ulcer consists of the malignant transformation of a chronic ulcerative lesion. It is a relatively rare phenomenon. The malignant tumor most commonly described in the literature is squamous cell carcinoma, followed by basal-cell carcinoma, sarcoma and melanoma. The pathogenesis of Marjolin's ulcer remains to be fully clarified.

Colonic ulcerations can affect the entire colon and rectum, and have variable clinical presentation according to the anatomic location and underlying pathology. Diverse causes may lead to colonic ulceration, such as inflammatory bowel diseases, oral drugs (mostly nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), local or diffuse ischemia, and different intestinal microorganisms. An ulcer may also herald a concealed malignant disease. In most cases, colonic ulcerate is associated with diffuse colitis in the acute setup or with inflammatory bowel diseases, and to the lesser extent the ulceration is defined…

Ulcerative appendicitis (UA), the appendiceal counterpart of ulcerative colitis (UC), is frequently present in colectomy specimens from patients with universal UC and is regarded as part of the continuous inflammatory process that is a hallmark of this disease. It has been reported, although not universally accepted, that UA may also occur in UC that spares the proximal colon, constituting a skip lesion. Colectomies, which included appendices, from 160 consecutive adult and pediatric patients with UC were reviewed histologically and separated into two groups, universal and nonuniversal UC, on …

Thirty-two children with ulcer disease were seen over a four-year period. Twenty-seven children had a primary ulcer and five had an ulcer associated with an acute or chronic illness (secondary ulcer). Antral ulcer was diagnosed most commonly, followed by duodenal ulcer and gastric body ulcer. The ratio of gastric ulcer to duodenal ulcer was 17:11. Diagnosis of ulcer was accomplished by endoscopy in 97% of the patients and by radiography in 70% of those studied. Radiologic accuracy was obtained in 89% with duodenal ulcer but in only 50% of those with gastric ulcer. Children with primary gastric…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Helicobacter pylori is the major pathogenesis of peptic ulcer disease. It is important for the endoscopists to detect H. pylori infection during endoscopy. Only one endoscopic diagnostic method can be used due to the limitation of health insurance payments in Taiwan. Most endoscopists use the tissue obtained from the ulcer margins for histopathological examination and detection of H. pylori infection in patients with gastric ulcer. Whether this is suitable deserves study.
METHODOLOGY: A total of 103 consecutive subjects with gastric ulcer were recruited. Biopsy specimens from…

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease, traditionally regarded as being limited to the colorectum. Although several gastroduodenal lesions have been reported in cases of UC, in general, duodenal lesions in UC are believed to be uncommon and gastric lesions in UC are a rare presentation. In this report, we presented a 66-year-old lady with upper GI presentation with gastroduodenal ulcerative colitis accompanying pancolonic UC.

The mortality in elderly patients over the age of 80 years with peptic ulcers in the case of complications, such as bleeding and perforation is higher than in the general population. Duodenal ulcers are associated with Helicobacter pylori infections in 90% of cases and in 70% of gastric ulcers. The treatment of elderly patients is often difficult due to multimorbidity and polypharmacy and necessitates a geriatric approach. Ulcers are often caused by medication with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and acetylsalicylic acid. Despite the fact that progress in therapy has improved the…
