A new method of examining the scrotum by ultrasound with an automated water-path scanner is described. This method allows immobility of the scrotum in a more acceptable and painless way than in contact scanning methods. Panoramic scans of the entire scrotum and precision tomographic plane placement are advantages over conventional techniques. A description of normal scrotal anatomy includes the mediastinum of the testis, an important scrotal landmark. Representative cases of benign and malignant scrotal disease are presented to emphasize the utility of water-path scanning.

Traumatic lesions involving the parenchyma of liver and spleen give heterogeneous echo patterns on sonograms. Associated haematomas appear as sonolucent or sonotransparent areas. Subcapsular haematomas appear as peripheral sonolucent or sonotransparent areas. High resolution sectorial real-time ultrasound demonstrates such abnormalities. Prior studies on twin biparietal growth have resulted in conflicting conclusions. This study was designed to establish definitive criteria based on both ultrasonic biparietal diameter (BPD) and newborn anthropometric data for normal versus abnormal growth in multiple pregnancies. Thirty-seven patients with Ménière's disease were treated with ultrasonic irradiation to the lateral and superior semicircular canals. In a longterm follow-up study, lasting alleviation of the vertiginous attacks was found in 24 out of 33 patients (72%). In most of the cases, hearing remained unchanged. It is suggested that the therapeutic effect is associated with a change in the endolymphatic drainage dur to histological alterations in the labyrinth produced by ultrasound.

Ultrasound has been suggested as a lower risk alternative to mammography for detecting breast abnormalities. Mammograms and ultrasonograms of 32 women patients were compared, revealing three distinct ultrasonic parenchymal patterns which corresponded to previously reported mammographic patterns: fatty (N1), ductal (P1 or P2), and dysplastic (DY). These constitute a new system of parenchymal classification, to our knowledge.

Precise knowledge of the echoanatomy of the normal female pelvis is a prerequisite in the diagnosis of ovarian tumours. Diagnostic criteria for the differentiation between cystic and solid lesions are discussed. Ultrasonic localization of missing IUDs was performed on 51 patients with a high degree of accuracy. This method also demonstrated pregnancy where present and other pathologic conditions including fibroids and ovarian cysts. Other methods recommended for localization of missing IUDs are discussed with particular reference to their adverse effects. A protocol for localizing missing IUDs using ultrasound is recommended.
