Two large bladder diverticula that induced severe micturition disturbances were surgically removed in a 5-year-old boy with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). One year after surgery, a new, asymptomatic diverticulum developed. This case is discussed in the light of nine similar cases that have already been published. It is concluded that EDS diverticula form a distinct group characterized by postoperative recurrence. They are not due to vesicourethral obstruction but probably result from an anomaly of the vesical wall. They are responsible for micturition difficulties and urinary tract infections.

A retrospective study is presented of 19 patients with inoperable urinary bladder carcinoma in which urinary diversion was performed by ileal conduit without cystectomy. The postoperative mortality rate was 10.5% and the incidence of complications was 16%. The average time of survival was 5.1 months and varied from between one and 23 months. According to the literature these results are no better than those in patients undergoing no therapy at all. A case of primary localized amyloidosis of the bladder during a twelve-year period is described. The initial symptom was miction pain when she was 43 years old. Cystoscopic examination revealed yellowish elevated lesion with hemorrhage at the right side of the bladder neck. Transurethral resection was performed, but two years later recurrence was found at the trigonum as well as the original site. The two lesions were apart. We describe 2 patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) who manifested characteristic pathologic abnormalities in the urinary bladder. Increased connective tissue deposition in the lamina propria and between smooth muscle bundles was demonstrated in both patients and endovascular proliferation in small arteries of the bladder was noted in one patient. The study is a clinicopathologic report on 64 patients with primary adenocarcinoma of the urinary bladder and urachus, with particular reference to important prognostic and therapeutic factors. All tumors exhibited adenocarcinomatous features in at least two thirds of the examined tumor area. The sympathetic inhibitory mechanism in dog urinary bladder studied. The bladder contractions induced by electrical stimulation of the pelvic nerve both proximal and distal to the pelvic plexus and by intraarterial administration of tetramethylammonium (TMA) were inhibited by stimulation of the hypogastric nerve and intraarterial injection of catecholamines. In 13 rabbits the fundus of the bladder was resected and the defect repaired by a free peritoneal transplant from the lateral abdominal wall. One animal died postoperatively of purulent peritonitis. In the remaining animals the transplant healed with no signs of irritation. The mean reduction of bladder capacity per body weight between the 5th and 18th postoperative week was only 13 per cent.
