[Examination of visual performance by adaptive optics].

BACKGROUND: The dependence of visual quality on higher order aberrations (HOA) is highly important for refractive surgery (LASIK) as well as for the correction by vision aids. The use of the adaptive optics (AO) enables the measurement and manipulation of conventional lower order aberrations (defocus, astigmatism) and for HOAs as well. In this work, an Adaptive Optics Visual Simulator is presented that enables one to correct wave-front deformations up to the sixth order of Zernike polynomials, as well as to induce specific aberrations. The subjects observe a TFT monitor, so that a subjective r

Interactive image-guided endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy.

The authors describe dacryocystorhinostomy performed with CT guidance. A 53-year-old man with a history of cocaine abuse was referred for bilateral nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Nasal speculum examination revealed an oronasal fistula and obliteration of the inferior nasal septum. Bilaterally, the inferior and middle turbinates were contracted, forming thick scar tissue conglomerates. The loss of normal anatomic landmarks and extensive contracted scar tissue precluded standard dacryocystorhinostomy approaches. Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy was therefore undertaken using CT-guided navigation

A virtual reality system for the assessment and rehabilitation of the activities of daily living.

Successful rehabilitation with respect to the activities of daily living (ADL) requires accurate and effective assessment and training. A number of studies have emphasized the requirement for rehabilitation methods that are both relevant to the patient's real world environment, and that can also be transferred to other daily living tasks. Virtual reality (VR) has many advantages over other ADL rehabilitation techniques, and offers the potential to develop a human performance testing and training environment. Therefore, in this study, the virtual supermarket was developed and the possibility of

AI-Driven Web-Based Speech Transcription Tool: A Novel Approach for Efficient Evaluation of Verbal Memory Performance.

Memory deficits are prevalent in epilepsy and other brain disorders, significantly affecting quality of life. In particular, patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy require ongoing monitoring and repeated memory assessments to track cognitive function, which could benefit from automated transcription tools. We used a classic free recall (FR) verbal memory task, where participants recalled words, to assess their performance by recording, transcribing, and detecting vocalizations of correctly remembered words. Conventional manual speech transcription methods are time-consuming and prone to h

Upper Body-Based Power Wheelchair Control Interface for Individuals With Tetraplegia.

Many power wheelchair control interfaces are not sufficient for individuals with severely limited upper limb mobility. The majority of controllers that do not rely on coordinated arm and hand movements provide users a limited vocabulary of commands and often do not take advantage of the user's residual motion. We developed a body-machine interface (BMI) that leverages the flexibility and customizability of redundant control by using high dimensional changes in shoulder kinematics to generate proportional control commands for a power wheelchair. In this study, three individuals with cervical sp

An online multi-channel SSVEP-based brain-computer interface using a canonical correlation analysis method.

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in using steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) in brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. However, several aspects of current SSVEP-based BCI systems need improvement, specifically in relation to speed, user variation and ease of use. With these improvements in mind, this paper presents an online multi-channel SSVEP-based BCI system using a canonical correlation analysis (CCA) method for extraction of frequency information associated with the SSVEP. The key parameters, channel location, window length and the number of harmonics, are in

Hybrid BCI for Meal-Assist Robot Using Dry-Type EEG and Pupillary Light Reflex.

Brain-computer interface (BCI)-based assistive technologies enable intuitive and efficient user interaction, significantly enhancing the independence and quality of life of elderly and disabled individuals. Although existing wet EEG-based systems report high accuracy, they suffer from limited practicality. This study presents a hybrid BCI system combining dry-type EEG-based flash visual-evoked potentials (FVEP) and pupillary light reflex (PLR) designed to control an LED-based meal-assist robot. The hybrid system integrates dry-type EEG and eyewear-type infrared cameras, addressing the preparat

BioCluster: tool for identification and clustering of Enterobacteriaceae based on biochemical data.

Presumptive identification of different Enterobacteriaceae species is routinely achieved based on biochemical properties. Traditional practice includes manual comparison of each biochemical property of the unknown sample with known reference samples and inference of its identity based on the maximum similarity pattern with the known samples. This process is labor-intensive, time-consuming, error-prone, and subjective. Therefore, automation of sorting and similarity in calculation would be advantageous. Here we present a MATLAB-based graphical user interface (GUI) tool named BioCluster. This to

A P300 event-related potential brain-computer interface (BCI): the effects of matrix size and inter stimulus interval on performance.

We describe a study designed to assess properties of a P300 brain-computer interface (BCI). The BCI presents the user with a matrix containing letters and numbers. The user attends to a character to be communicated and the rows and columns of the matrix briefly intensify. Each time the attended character is intensified it serves as a rare event in an oddball sequence and it elicits a P300 response. The BCI works by detecting which character elicited a P300 response. We manipulated the size of the character matrix (either 3 x 3 or 6 x 6) and the duration of the inter stimulus interval (ISI) bet

Brain-Computer Interfaces for Communication: Preferences of Individuals With Locked-in Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have been proposed as an assistive technology (AT) allowing people with locked-in syndrome (LIS) to use neural signals to communicate. To design a communication BCI (cBCI) that is fully accepted by the users, their opinion should be taken into consideration during the research and development process. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the preferences of prospective cBCI users regarding (1) the applications they would like to control with a cBCI, (2) the mental strategies they would prefer to use to control the cBCI, and (3) when during their clinical trajecto
