BACKGROUND: A 5-year experience with the modified sandwich-vacuum pack technique, using an opened 3-litre urological irrigation bag and continuous high-pressure suction, for temporary abdominal wall closure is presented.
METHODS: The records of all patients who underwent temporary abdominal wall closure using this method from January 1996 to December 2000 were examined.

BACKGROUND: Vesicouterine fistulas are associated with cesarean section and more rarely with vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC). Many surgical approaches exist, including hysterectomy.
CASE: A vesicouterine fistula was diagnosed after VBAC in a 34-year-old multipara with two previous cesarean sections. The defect failed to close after four months of bladder drainage. Closure via laparotomy with an omental flap and preservation of the uterus was successful.
CONCLUSION: Vesicouterine fistula can occur after VBAC, and failure of conservative therapy can be treated abdominally with preservation

OBJECTIVE: To prospectively determine patterns and predictors of bleeding after early abortion with mifepristone and misoprostol or manual vacuum aspiration (MVA).
METHODS: Women fewer than 63 days from the last menstrual period and desiring termination of pregnancy were offered medical abortion with 200 mg oral mifepristone and 800 micrograms oral misoprostol or MVA under local anesthesia. Since few years a new vacuum-assisted biopsy is used in addition to the common gun-needle biopsy in suspicious lesions of the mamma. Aim of our study was to compare these two techniques in regard to their histological outcome. BACKGROUND: Vacuum-assisted delivery is widely used in operative vaginal deliveries but carries a risk of rare yet severe complications. A neonatal parietal bone fracture was complicated by subgaleal and subdural hematomas after a vacuum extraction delivery. Low-dose computer tomography visualized a comminuted skull fracture.
