Prevalence of Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus in wild mammals: the first global systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) represents a global public health threat due to its ability to disseminate antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes across ecological boundaries. While the prevalence of VRE has been extensively studied in clinical and agricultural settings, its occurrence and dynamics in wildlife remain underexplored. This review aimed to systematically examine and analyze the global prevalence of VRE in wild mammals. CONTENT: Following PRISMA guidelines, an extensive search of six databases yielded 25 studies that met predefined inclusion criteria. Data were

Unanticipated Quinoline Modification on Vancomycin as an Effective Strategy to Alter the Antibacterial Profile and Combat Multidrug Resistance.

Lipid II, referred to as the bacterial "Achilles' heel" and serving as the target of vancomycin, remains inaccessible to vancomycin in Gram-negative bacteria due to their outer membrane (OM) barrier, rendering it intrinsically ineffective against these pathogens. Herein, we serendipitously discovered that a simple, single quinoline moiety modification on vancomycin yields quinovancins, which not only restore vancomycin susceptibility against acquired vancomycin-resistant strains but also unexpectedly expand its antibacterial spectrum to encompass certain Gram-negative Enterobacteriaceae (e.g.,

Exploring the feasibility of bacteriocins EntK1 and EntEJ97s in treatment of systemic vancomycin resistant enterococci infections in mice.

AIMS: Enterocins K1 and EJ97 have specific antimicrobial activity against Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis, respectively. The aim of this study was to investigate the utility of these enterocins for in vivo treatment of systemic enterococcal infections. METHODS AND RESULTS: The antimicrobial effect in blood was analysed and compared against the effect in saline. Colony forming unit counts revealed that the enterocins killed all the bacteria within 1 hour. Additionally, the bactericidal effect against E. faecalis was more rapid in blood, indicating a possible synergy between EntE

Phage-specific immunity impairs efficacy of bacteriophage targeting Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus in a murine model.

Bacteriophage therapy is a promising approach to address antimicrobial infections though questions remain regarding the impact of the immune response on clinical effectiveness. Here, we develop a mouse model to assess phage treatment using a cocktail of five phages from the Myoviridae and Siphoviridae families that target Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus gut colonization. Phage treatment significantly reduces fecal bacterial loads of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus. We also characterize immune responses elicited following administration of the phage cocktail. While minimal innate responses

Mechanisms of acquisition of the vanA operon among vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus genomes: The tip of the iceberg?

BACKGROUND: Vancomycin is frequently used as a last line of defence against infections due to multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). A recent finding described the acquisition of vancomycin-resistant S. aureus strains by the integration of an enterococcal plasmid containing the vanA operon into the S. aureus chromosome via homologous recombination involving a specific integration site called locus L2. METHODS: To characterise all mechanisms of acquisition of vanA, this study analysed the 15 706 S. aureus genomes to look for vanA and described its genetic environment. RESULTS:

Prevention of possible vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus outbreak caused by infants transferred due to earthquake trauma.

Infection control measures may be disrupted by inter- or intra-hospital transfers after major disasters. We report the possible outbreak and prevention of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus spp. (VRE) strains carried by infants transferred to our neonatal intensive care unit from another unit after the earthquake. Screening cultures (rectal swabs) were obtained from infants during hospitalisation and contact isolation was performed. We analysed the clonal analysis of VRE strains isolated from patients by pulse field gel electrophoresis.

Alpha-amyrin as an anti-biofilm agent against methicillin-resistant and vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus.

Staphylococcus aureus has caused life-threatening infections and developed resistance against conventional antimicrobials, posing a significant threat to human health worldwide. Biofilms that surround the bacteria cells act as a protective layer, allowing cells inside the biofilm to be resistant to external stresses such as antimicrobials. Therefore, biofilms further complicate treatment available for infections caused by multi-drug resistant Staphylococcus aureus. A previous study on alpha-amyrin (AM), derived from ursane, was reported to significantly reduce the biomass and inhibit the metab

Opioid exposure as a potential risk factor for vancomycin-resistant enterococci colonization in the absence of antimicrobial exposure.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial exposure leads to an increased risk of colonization and spread of vancomycin-resistant enterococci. Studies have also implicated exposure to nonantimicrobial medications as a potential risk factor for an increased risk of colonization with these pathogens. METHODS: A matched case-control study was performed to determine specific nonantimicrobial medications associated with vancomycin-resistant enterococci rectal colonization. Cases and controls were defined as persons who were not exposed to antimicrobials in the preceding 12 months and in whom vancomycin-resistant e

Detection of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus using vancomycin conjugated silica-based fluorescent nanoprobe.

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is a worldwide major pathogenic bacteria that has emerged over the past three decades as the leading cause of nosocomial and community-acquired infections. Biosensors can provide rapid, sensitive, and selective detection of the presence and number of bacteria in various environments. Herein, a novel fluorescence nanoprobe was designed as a biosensor for MRSA detection using dye-incorporated silica nanoparticles (FSiNP). Based on the results of specific surface area analysis using the Brauner Emmett-Teller (BET) method, the surface area of the
