Women Veterans' definitions of peer support: A qualitative description analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Women are the fastest-growing subpopulation of U.S. military Veterans, yet their voices have rarely been used to explore peer support among Veterans. This study defines Veteran peer support from the perspective of women Veterans and aims to increase providers' awareness of the value of peer support for improving Veteran mental health. METHODS: Data were drawn from a multi-site evaluation of Veteran peer programs. Transcripts from semi-structured interviews with women Veterans (N = 25) were selected and analyzed. Guided by a qualitative description approach, the researchers used …

Memory surfacing among veterans with PTSD receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Growing evidence demonstrates that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2) induces neuroplasticity and can benefit individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of the current study was to evaluate the rate and pattern of memory surfacing during the course of HBO2 among veterans with combat-related PTSD. METHODS: In a post-hoc analysis of a prospective study of the effect of HBO2 on PTSD symptoms in veterans, we evaluated the rate and character of memory surfacing during the course of HBO2 treatment. The treatment consisted of 60 daily 90-minute sessions, at 2 atmosph…

Risk Factors for Death Among Veterans Following Acute Kidney Injury.

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury is prevalent among hospitalized veterans, and associated with increased risk of death following discharge. However, risk factors for death following acute kidney injury have not been well defined. We developed a mortality prediction model using Veterans Health Administration data. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included inpatients from 2013 through 2018 with a creatinine increase of ≥0.3 mg/dL. We evaluated 45 variables for inclusion in our final model, with a primary outcome of 1-year mortality. Bootstrap sampling with replacement was used to identif…

New Opioid Persistence in Veterans Following Major and Minor Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Opioids are often a mainstay of managing postsurgical pain. Persistent use of opioids for more than 90 days after surgery is problematic, and the incidence of this adverse outcome has been reported in the civilian population ranging from 0.4% to 7%. Veterans compose a special population exposed to trauma and stressful situations and consequently face increased risk for habit-forming behavior and drug overdose. This evaluation determined the prevalence of opioid persistence after surgery and its relationship to patient characteristics in a military veteran population. METHODS: A …

Risk of dementia among veterans experiencing homelessness and housing instability.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, nearly 85,000 Veterans experienced homelessness during 2020, and thousands more are experiencing housing instability, representing a significant proportion of the population.1 Many Veterans experiencing homelessness are aging and have complex co-occurring medical, psychiatric, and substance use disorders. Homelessness and older age put Veterans at greater risk for age-related disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). METHODS: We examined the rate of ADRD diagnosis for Veterans experiencing homelessness and housing instability comp…

Housing Status, Cancer Care, and Associated Outcomes Among US Veterans.

IMPORTANCE: Cancer is a leading cause of death among older people experiencing homelessness. However, the association of housing status with cancer outcomes is not well described. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the diagnosis, treatment, surgical outcomes, and mortality by housing status of patients who receive care from the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health system for colorectal, breast, or lung cancer. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study identified all US veterans diagnosed with lung, colorectal, or breast cancer who received VA care between October 1,…

Adverse Childhood Experiences Among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Queer Veterans.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences portend vulnerability to numerous physical and mental health concerns across the lifespan. Separate bodies of work suggest that both lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer individuals and military veterans are more likely to report adverse childhood experiences than their non-lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer and non-veteran counterparts, respectively. Although lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer veterans experience health disparities compared with non-lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer veterans, the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences among individu…

Seventeen-Year National Pain Prevalence Trends Among U.S. Military Veterans.

U.S. military veterans experience higher pain prevalence than nonveterans. However, it is unclear how the disparities in pain prevalence have changed over time because previous trend studies are limited to veterans using the Veterans Health Administration. This repeated cross-sectional study aimed to characterize pain prevalence trends in the overall population of U.S. veterans compared to nonveterans, using nationally representative data. We analyzed 17 years of data from the National Health Interview Survey (2002-2018), with a mean annual unweighted sample of 29,802 U.S. adults (total unweig…
