Numerous types of envenomations may be encountered by health care workers depending on where in North America they work. Clinicians should be familiar with the animals in their region that may lead to envenomation.A rational approach with use of poison center or medical toxicology consultation services ensures that cases are managed appropriately.

A retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate the incidence, signalment, haematological and biochemical changes, therapy, and outcome of dogs presented to the Outpatients section of the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital for confirmed snake envenomation. Three hundred and seventy-six records of dogs presented for snake envenomation from 1998 to 2002 were reviewed and 155 were selected on the basis of there being a positively identified snake. The 2 most commonly encountered snake envenomations in dogs were puff-adders (Bitis arietans) and snouted cobras (Naja annulifera annulifera).

Snakes from temperate climates are often made to hibernate in zoos to stimulate reproduction. Unfortunately, deaths have occurred during and after hibernation. This study evaluated the health status, pre- and posthibernation, of 31 adult viperid snakes. It included morphometric measurements, hematology, and blood chemistry. No differences were seen in body weights and weight to length ratios between pre- and posthibernation examinations, suggesting that the overall condition of the snakes did not change. No differences were seen in hematologic and blood chemistry parameters, except that bile a

INTRODUCTION: Vipera xanthina palaestinae is the most widely distributed venomous snake in Israel, accounting for most envenomations. A specific equine antivenin is efficacious against both systemic and local manifestations if given within hours. This study sought to determine if delayed vipera xanthina palaestinae antivenin can be effective.
METHODS: Patients who had been bitten by vipera xanthina palaestinae during 1991-1995 were evaluated. Those who continued to deteriorate beyond 24 h post envenomation, in spite of treatment or because of delayed diagnosis, were given vipera xanthina pala

The primary structure of the lectin-like protein from Lachesis muta stenophyrs venom was deduced from analysis of the N-terminus and the sequence of peptides obtained after digestion with trypsin, Arg-C enzyme, Staphylococcus aureus V8 protease and endoproteinase Asp-N. Peptides generated by cleavage of the lectin with cyanogen bromide and o-iodosobenzoic acid were also sequenced. Comparison of the complete 135 amino acid residues sequence with those of the lectin from the venom of Crotalus atrox, with platelet coagglutinin from Bothrops jararaca beta-fragment and with the anticoagulant B prot

BACKGROUND: There are only two antivenoms on the market approved for North American pit viper envenomations; crotalidae polyvalent immune Fab (ovine) and crotalidae immune F(ab')2 (equine). There is currently no consensus on which agent may be more effective.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of F(ab')2 compared with Fab regarding systemic and local effects of North American pit viper envenomation.
METHODS: Patients two years of age and older were retrospectively included and separated into groups if they received Fab or F(ab')2. The primary outcome compared

Context: Today, immunotherapy with Fab or F(ab')2 fragments is considered as a gold standard treatment for patients bitten by vipers. We compared the efficiency of two antivenoms, Viperfav® and Viperatab®, in mainland France in 2017-2018 with data provided by the French poison control centre (PCC).Methods: Patients with a moderate (2a and 2b) or severe (3) envenomation after a European viper bite and treated with immunotherapy were included and the markers chosen were the risk of post-antivenom treatment worsening, duration of hospital stay and persistent functional discomfort on day 15. BACKGROUND: Carpet vipers (Echis) are found across the semiarid regions of west, north, and east Africa; west, south, and east Arabia; parts of Iran and Afghanistan north to Uzbekistan; and in Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka. Recently, a new species belonging to the Echis genus, Echis omanensis has been recognized in Oman. Not much is known about the clinical manifestations of envenomation from its bite.
CASE REPORT: A 63-year-old snake keeper presented to the emergency department shortly after being bitten by an Oman carpet viper (E. omanensis). The incident occurred during expression of the

BACKGROUND: Data on the long-term outcomes of acute kidney injury (AKI) in envenomed patients leading to chronic kidney disease (CKD) are scarce. The aim of the study was to investigate this issue and to determine the predictive factors in developing CKD.
METHODS: The records of a series of 54 patients who had AKI following a snakebite during the period 2004-2009 and who had been followed up were reviewed in the nephrology unit, Kandy, Sri Lanka. The primary outcome measure was the failure of renal functions to return to normal within 1 year. The renal histology was studied in seven patients.

The ammodytoxins (Atxs) are neurotoxic phospholipases which occur in Vipera ammodytes ammodytes (Vaa) snake venom. There are three Atx isoforms, A, B, and C, which differ in only five amino acid positions at the C-terminus but differ substantially in their toxicity. The objective of this study was to establish an analytical method for unambiguous identification of all three isoforms and to use the method to assess a procedure for purification of the most toxic phospholipase, AtxA, from the venom. Isolation procedure for AtxA consisted of isolation of Atx-cross-reactive material (proteins recog

The venom of Vipera ammodytes ammodytes (Vaa), like the venoms of other Viperinae snakes, is largely haemorrhagic and necrotising, and only to a lesser extent neurotoxic to humans. The components most extensively studied so far, and most probably involved in generating the observed pathologies, are haemorrhagins (H), members of the metalloproteinase group of enzymes, and neurotoxic ammodytoxins (Atxs), that belong to the secretory phospholipases A2. Rabbit antisera were prepared containing functional antibodies specific for each class of pathology-inducing venom constituents and for both class

We report a 60 year old male bitten by snakes from the Acanthophis genus (Death adder) on two occasions who developed high titres of human IgG antibodies to Acanthophis venom detected at the time of the second bite. The patient was bitten by Acanthophis antarcticus (common death adder) on the first occasion, developed non-specific systemic effects and did not receive antivenom. Three months later he was bitten by Acanthophis praelongus (northern death adder) and he developed significant local myotoxicity associated with a moderate rise in the creatine kinase (maximum 4770 U/L). He was given an

Gloshedobin, a thrombin-like enzyme from the venom of Gloydius shedaoensis was expressed as Hsp70 fusion protein from the construct pPIC9K/hsp70-TLE in the yeast Pichia pastoris. By fusing gloshedobin to the C-terminus of Hsp70, an expression level of 44.5mg Hsp70-gloshedobin per liter of culture was achieved by methanol induction. The fusion protein secreted in the culture medium was conveniently purified by two chromatographic steps: Q-Sepharose FF and Superdex 200. The purified enzyme had an apparent molecular mass of 98 kDa according to SDS-PAGE analysis, and exhibited fibrinogenolytic act

This case report represents a documentation of severe envenomation by Proatheris superciliaris, a species for which no specific antivenom exists. A 27-year-old male bitten on the finger by an adult P. superciliaris developed immediate severe pain radiating up the limb and local ecchymotic features with tissue necrosis ensuing over the following 36h, requiring debridement of necrotic tissue. Approximately 72h post-envenomation jaundice and hemoglobinuria were observed, but no other clinical signs of coagulopathy or hemorrhage. Hemolysis was evidenced by fragmented red blood cells and hyperbilir

Heartwater is a tick-borne infectious disease caused by the rickettsial organism Cowdria ruminantium, currently Ehrlichia ruminantium. It poses an imminent threat to the Western Hemisphere, where it could cause mortality in cattle and other ruminant livestock in excess of 70%. It has been reported in the Caribbean; and its vector, Amblyomma sparsum, has been found on imported African spurred tortoises (Geochelone sulcata) and leopard tortoises (Geochelone pardalis) in southern Florida in the United States, leading to an importation ban on these reptiles. Symptoms have not been previously repor

Ammodytase, a high molecular mass metalloproteinase with fibrinogenolytic and fibrinolytic activities, was purified from long-nosed viper (Vipera ammodytes ammodytes) venom by gel filtration, affinity and ion-exchange chromatographies. The enzyme is a single-chain glycoprotein with apparent molecular mass of 70 kDa and isoelectric point of 6.6. Ammodytase shows very weak hemorrhagic activity, and only at doses higher than 20 microg. Consistent with this, it partially degrades some components of the extracellular matrix in vitro. It cleaves the Aalpha-chain of fibrinogen preferentially at pepti
