Porphyria cutanea tarda and hepatitis C viral infection. A clinical and virologic study.

BACKGROUND AND DESIGN: The role of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) is probable since the global HCV antibody prevalence among patients with PCT is about 70%. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the virologic characteristics in 12 patients with sporadic PCT and in one patient with familial PCT. Anti-HCV antibodies were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and confirmed by recombinant immunoblot assay. Hepatitis B virus and antihuman immunodeficiency virus markers were also determined. The polymerase chain reaction was performed to detect the fol

Enterovirus associated placental morphology: a light, virological, electron microscopic and immunohistologic study.

The purpose of this study was to identify the possible effect of enteroviruses on placental tissue. Seventy-eight pregnant women were studied throughout their pregnancy: enteroviral infection was detected by faecal viral isolation and seric neutralization of previously identified virus in cell culture. In 19 cases of confirmed maternal infection, placentae were examined grossly, by optical microscopy, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic methods. Ten term placentae from women included in the study, with no clinical, serological or virological evidence of enteroviral infection, were use

Endemic Lassa fever in Liberia. II. Serological and virological findings in hospital patients.

Patients admitted with fever to four Liberian hospitals were tested for Lassa fever (LF) by means of the indirect fluorescent antibody technique and by virus isolation. The incidence of LF and presumptive LF among consecutive febrile adult patients was 14% and 17% in two hospitals located in the interior; no cases of LF were found among 24 consecutive patients in a hospital near the coast. In the three inland hospitals the incidence of confirmed or presumptive LF among the patients in whom the diagnosis was seriously considered varied from 13% to 36%. Lassa virus was isolated from 17 patients

Two cases of coxsackie B2 infection in neonates: clinical, virological, and epidemiological aspects.

Two cases of neonatal coxsackie virus B2 infection are described. One infant presented with meningitis and enteritis, the other with rhinitis, meningoencephalitis, and enteritis. Both infants made good recoveries. The virus infection could also be demonstrated in all nonimmune family members, most of whom gave a history of recent mild febrile disease (pharyngitis, diarrhea). Enterovirus infections may be suspected in cases of neonatal meningitis or myocarditis associated with gastrointestinal signs, especially 1. when it is during the hot season July-October, 2. when there has been febrile ill

Search for canine-distemper-virus antibodies in multiple sclerosis. A detailed virological evaluation.

Sera and cerebrospinal fluid samples from multiple-sclerosis (MS) patients, matched controls, and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) patients were analysed for the presence of antibodies specific for measles and canine distemper virus (CDV). Virus-specific antibodies were identified by haemagglutination inhibition, neutralisation, and immune precipitation in combination with polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis. SSPE and MS patients had a higher antibody activity towards measles virus than controls. Moreover, human sera partly neutralised CDV; this was attributed to antibody activity aga

[Experimental lymphocytic choriomeningitis of the mouse. Pathologic, virologic and electric correlations (author's transl)].

The brain electrographic activity of mouse experimental LCM has been systematically compared with the pathology and the virus growth in brain. There is an excellent correlation between anatomic lesions and brain electrographic activity which begins in slow waves followed with electric discharges attendant upon clinical paroxysms. The different records have been described and a physiopathological interpretation of these electroclinical paroxysms is proposed.

Clinical and virological findings in patients with cytologically diagnosed gynecologic herpes simplex infections.

Amoung 57,117 routinely collected Papanicolaou smears from the female genital tract there were 90 slides (0.16%) from 85 patients on which a cytologic diagnosis of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection was made. The characteristic cytologic changes occurred predominantly on the ectocervical part of the smears. The changes were transient but occasionally remained detectable on the corresponding histologic specimens up to 2.5 months. Viral isolation was successful in a majority of cases when performed simultaneously with or less than a week after the cytologic diagnosis. The rate of success rapid

[Meningitis caused by enteroviruses. Clinical and virological study of several sporadic cases in adults].

In the course of seven years (1968--1974) viral investigations were carried out in 212 casese of meningitis; predominantly Coxsackie viruses and sometimes ECHO viruses were isolated from 80 cases (37.73%). No polioviruses were isolated. Analysis of the clinical data (onset, general conidtion, evolution, complications, psychical, renal and cardiac disturbances etc.) revealed the severe aspect of these cases. The aspect and evolution of the cerebrospinal fluid showed the presence in almost 25% of the cases of an increased number of cellular elements of more than 1 000/mm3 and albumin sometimes f

Congenital cytomegalovirus infection: clinical, pathological and virological studies of two fatal cases.

Two infants severely ill at birth as a result of congenital cytomegalovirus infection were born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in April and July 1968. Both died within seven weeks. Clinical, pathological and virological studies including serology and electron microscopy were made both before and after death. Cytomegalovirus was isolated in tissue culture from urine specimens from both infants during life and from organ tissues, blood and ascitic fluid after death. Large inclusion-bearing cells mixed with the erythrocytes and leukocytes were seen within the lumina of pulmonary blood vessels. A brief

Once- versus twice-daily lopinavir/ritonavir tablets in virologically suppressed, HIV-infected, treatment-experienced children: comparative pharmacokinetics and virological outcome after switching to once-daily lopinavir/ritonavir.

OBJECTIVES: Data on lopinavir/ritonavir tablets administered once daily in children are limited. We compared the pharmacokinetics (PK) of lopinavir/ritonavir twice daily versus once daily in virologically suppressed, HIV-infected children, and assessed the virological outcome, at 48 weeks, in children receiving the regimen of lopinavir/ritonavir once daily. PATIENTS AND METHODS: HIV-infected children receiving a twice-daily lopinavir/ritonavir-based regimen and with an HIV-1 RNA viral load (VL) <40 copies/mL for at least 3 months were enrolled. Intensive steady-state 12 h blood sampling for P

Comparative virology and pathology of Monkeypox virus in Syrian hamsters, C57BL/6, and BALB/c mice: A framework for preclinical model selection.

Monkeypox virus (MPXV), a zoonotic orthopoxvirus, has emerged as a major public health concern following its global spread in 2022. Robust small animal models are urgently needed to investigate MPXV pathogenesis and evaluate medical countermeasures. Here, we systematically compared MPXV infection in Syrian hamsters, C57BL/6 mice, and BALB/c mice following intraperitoneal inoculation. Syrian hamsters displayed the highest susceptibility, with systemic viral dissemination peaking at 2 days post-infection (dpi) and clearance by 12 dpi. Viral burdens were particularly elevated in the spleen and ki

Comparison of Molnupiravir Exposure-Response Relationships for Virology Response and Mechanism of Action Biomarkers With Clinical Outcomes in Treatment of COVID-19.

Molnupiravir, an orally administered drug for the treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID-19, is a prodrug of the ribonucleoside β-D-N4-hydroxycytidine (NHC). NHC incorporation in the SARS-CoV-2 RNA strand causes an accumulation of deleterious errors in the genome, resulting in reduced viral infectivity and replication. Exposure-response (E-R) analyses for viral RNA mutation rate and virologic outcomes were conducted using data from three phase 2/3 studies of molnupiravir (P006, MOVe-IN, and MOVe-OUT). Three dose levels (200, 400, and 800 mg every 12 hours [Q12H]) and placebo were evaluated. E-R d
