Prevalence of keratoconus in persons with Down syndrome: a review.

PURPOSE: Keratoconus is a vision-threatening condition, and there is a need for knowledge about the occurrence in subgroups of the population. The progression of the disease can be effectively stopped, and vision may be restored, if keratoconus is diagnosed at an early stage. The purpose of this review was to evaluate the literature of the prevalence of keratoconus in persons with Down syndrome. METHODS: We conducted a literature review of keratoconus prevalence in persons with Down syndrome. A thorough search was performed in Pubmed (Medline), and the quality of evidence was evaluated. Can Artificial Intelligence Make Screening Faster, More Accurate, and More Accessible?

Diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration are leading causes of vision loss and blindness worldwide. They tend to be asymptomatic in the early phase of disease and therefore require active screening programs to identify the patients requiring referral and treatment. Deep learning-based artificial intelligence technology has recently become a major topic in the field of ophthalmology. This paper aimed to provide a general view of the major findings on the application of deep learning for the classification of eye diseases from common imaging modalities. In the future,

Performance of American Indian children with fetal alcohol syndrome on the test of language development.

Alcohol is a teratogen known to have deleterious effects on the developing embryo and fetus. Language deficits secondary to central nervous system dysfunction are among the sequelae of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). Limited information is available regarding the language deficits associated with FAS, particularly among the population of American Indians in whom FAS is highly prevalent. The TOLD-P and TOLD-I were administered to 27 American Indian children: 10 with FAS and 17 normally developing control subjects. Pure-tone screening, immittance measurement, and vision screening preceded language…

Risk factors and timing of ocular complications after screening for retinopathy of prematurity.

PURPOSE: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) remains a leading cause of childhood vision loss, often resulting in long-term complications such as strabismus, amblyopia, and glaucoma. Despite advances in screening, limited data exist on which infants are at highest risk and when these complications typically emerge-an important gap given the nationwide shortage of pediatric ophthalmologists. This study aimed to identify predictors of post-ROP ocular complications and determine the optimal timing and frequency of pediatric ophthalmology follow-up visits. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 223 in

Frequency of oculomotor disorders in adolescents 11 to 17 years of age with concussion, 4 to 12 weeks post injury.

The purpose of the study was to determine the frequency of vision diagnoses after concussion in adolescents and evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of physician-administered screening for detecting convergence and accommodative disorders post-concussion. We enrolled participants 11 to 17 years old, assessed 4 to 12 weeks following a diagnosed concussion. During the initial concussion examination, a sports medicine physician measured the near point of convergence (NPC), monocular accommodative amplitude (AA), and symptoms using the Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey (CISS). A compreh

Remote Temperature Monitoring in Patients With Visual Impairment Due to Diabetes Mellitus: A Proposed Improvement to Current Standard of Care for Prevention of Diabetic Foot Ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Two debilitating sequelae of diabetes are foot ulcerations and vision impairing conditions including retinopathy, open-angle glaucoma, and cataracts. Current standard of care recommends daily visual screening of feet. Despite willingness, many patients are impeded by visual impairment. We investigate whether once-daily remote temperature monitoring can improve self-screening for patients at risk for diabetic foot complications. METHODS: We followed four male veterans with diabetes mellitus, peripheral neuropathy, impaired visual acuity, and at least one other diabetes-related visu

Universal newborn screening for congenital CMV infection: what is the evidence of potential benefit?

Congenital CMV infection is a leading cause of childhood disability. Many children born with congenital CMV infection are asymptomatic or have nonspecific symptoms and therefore are typically not diagnosed. A strategy of newborn CMV screening could allow for early detection and intervention to improve clinical outcomes. Interventions might include antiviral drugs or nonpharmaceutical therapies such as speech-language therapy or cochlear implants. Using published data from developed countries, we analyzed existing evidence of potential benefit that could result from newborn CMV screening. We fi

ADET MODEL: Real time autism detection via eye tracking model using retinal scan images.

BackgroundDeficits in concentration with social stimuli are more common in children affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Developing visual attention is one of the most vital elements for detecting autism. Eye tracking technology is a potential method to identify an early autism biomarker based on children's abnormal visual patterns.ObjectiveEye tracking retinal scan path images can be generated by eyeball movement during the time of watching the screen and capture the eye projection sequences, which helps to analyze the behavior of the children. The Shi-Tomasi corner detection methodolo

Contact lenses and digital eye strain.

Digital eye strain (DES) is a group of eye- and vision-related problems elicited by engagement with screens. Over half of screen users experience its symptoms, which include eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes, and neck and shoulder pain. Although contact lenses are a popular option for the correction of refractive error, their role in the aetiology and management of DES is still emerging. Recent review publications on DES only briefly discuss contact lenses. Thus, there is a need (1) to synthesise the current body of literature that has examined the relationship between contact len

Causes and prevalence of non-vision impairing ocular conditions among a rural adult population in sw Uganda.

Information is scanty about the extent of ocular morbidity in developing countries, particularly for non-vision impairing conditions (NVIC), although these constitute the majority of consultations in eye clinics. We have conducted a survey to determine the prevalence and causes of NVIC in a Ugandan adult population and compared our findings with the work pattern of the district hospital. Adults were screened using Snellen's illiterate E chart and those found with visual impairment (acuity less than 6/18) in either eye were referred to a low-vision clinic, and those with obvious ocular disease

Evaluation of vision services delivered by a mobile eye clinic in Costa Rica.

A number of private voluntary organizations provide mobile eye services to underserved populations in the developing world. This paper seeks to determine what segment of the population makes use of mobile vision clinics and whether the clinics are identifying significant eye conditions previously undetected by local eye care providers. The population studied were those attending the 1989 vision screening project conducted in rural Costa Rica by members of Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH). Sources of data include patient records of clinic attendees (N = 1530), patient interviews…

Deprivation amblyopia and congenital hereditary cataract.

Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder of vision associated with decreased visual acuity, poor or absent stereopsis, and suppression of information from one eye.(1,2) Amblyopia may be caused by strabismus (strabismic amblyopia), refractive error (anisometropic amblyopia), or deprivation from obstructed vision (deprivation amblyopia). 1 In the developed world, amblyopia is the most common cause of childhood visual impairment, 3 which reduces quality of life 4 and also almost doubles the lifetime risk of legal blindness.(5, 6) Successful treatment of amblyopia greatly depends on early detect

Effects of heterophoria on stereopsis.

The effects of horizontal heterophoria on Howard-Dolman stereopsis scores were investigated in a population of 1765 stereophotogrammetrists with no obvious impediment to binocular vision as determined in a vision screening. Exophoria over the 1 to 7 delta range showed no systematic and statistically valid effect on stereopsis but esophoria did show an effect. In a related population of 1339 stereophotogrammetrists, subjects with as little as 1 delta (+/- 0.5 delta) of vertical heterophoria exhibited a small but statistically significant decrease in stereopsis test scores compared to those with…

Content development of the VISION-Cog: a novel tool to assess cognitive impairment in visually impaired older adults in Singapore.

OBJECTIVES: Current cognitive screening and diagnostic instruments rely on visually dependent tasks and are, therefore, not suitable to assess cognitive impairment (CI) in visually impaired older adults. We describe the content development of the VISually Independent test battery Of NeuroCOGnition (VISION-Cog)-a new diagnostic tool to evaluate CI in visually impaired older Singaporean adults. DESIGN: The content development phase consisted of two iterative stages: a neuropsychological consultation and literature review (stage 1) and an expert-panel discussion (stage 2). In stage 1, we investi

Artificial intelligence for early detection of diabetic retinopathy: A vision transformer-based approach.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of diabetic retinopathy (DR), which is a primary cause of vision impairment globally, is a crucial phasis for effective intervention and treatment. Traditional screening workflows rely on manual diagnosis by ophthalmologists, which remains the gold standard but can be time-consuming and subject to variability due to human factors. To support and enhance the screening process, artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools have shown promise in automating DR detection, particularly with recent advances in deep learning. However, medical images with long-range dependen

Prevalence of keratoconus in first-degree relatives: a corneal tomography-based screening study.

INTRODUCTION: Keratoconus (KC) is often underdiagnosed in its early stages, leading to missed opportunities for timely intervention, especially among subclinical cases in first-degree relatives of patients with KC (FDRKC). This study aimed to evaluate whether screening FDRKC can effectively expand the reach of care and mitigate the risk of vision loss. Specifically, we estimated the prevalence of KC and KC traits among FDR KC compared to the FDR of tomographically normal individuals (FDRcontrol). METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 195 FDR of 89 KC patients and 199 FDR of 100 controls

Visual acuity measures do not reliably detect childhood refractive error--an epidemiological study.

PURPOSE: To investigate the utility of uncorrected visual acuity measures in screening for refractive error in white school children aged 6- … ting myopia and a sensitivity of 41% and a specificity of 84% in detecting hyperopia. CONCLUSIONS: Vision screening using logMAR acuity can reliably detect myopia, but not hyperopia or astigmatism in school-age children. Providers of vision screening programs should be cognisant that where detection of uncorrected hyperopic and/or astigmatic refractive error is a …
