Vitamin B12 dosage in multivitamin supplementation in the current literature is quite variable. There is no consensus about the optimal treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency. A systematic literature search on different supplementation regimes to treat perioperative vitamin B12 deficiencies in bariatric surgery was performed. The methodological quality of ten included studies was rated using the Newcastle Ottawa scale and ranged from moderate to good. The agreement between the reviewers was assessed with a Cohen's kappa (0.69). The current literature suggests that 350 μg oral vitamin B12 is the a

Chinese Shar-Pei dogs have a high prevalence of hypocobalaminemia and are commonly presented with clinical signs suggestive of severe and long-standing gastrointestinal disease such as diarrhea, vomiting, and/or weight loss. The aim of the current study was to evaluate serum concentrations of inflammatory markers, markers for intestinal disease, and immunological markers in Shar-Peis with hypocobalaminemia or normocobalaminemia (serum cobalamin concentrations within the reference interval). Serum samples from Shar-Peis were collected from various parts of the United States. Serum concentration

A roundtable to discuss the measurement of vitamin B-12 (cobalamin) status biomarkers in NHANES took place in July 2010. NHANES stopped measuring vitamin B-12-related biomarkers after 2006. The roundtable reviewed 3 biomarkers of vitamin B-12 status used in past NHANES--serum vitamin B-12, methylmalonic acid (MMA), and total homocysteine (tHcy)--and discussed the potential utility of measuring holotranscobalamin (holoTC) for future NHANES. The roundtable focused on public health considerations and the quality of the measurement procedures and reference methods and materials that past NHANES us

Transcobalamin II deficiency (# MIM 275350) is a rare, recessively inherited disorder of cobalamin transport that leads to intracellular cobalamin depletion with secondary impairment of methionine synthetase and methyl-malonyl CoA mutase activities. Affected individuals may suffer from long-term neurological sequelae if therapy with intramuscular hydroxocobalamin is not initiated promptly. We report two sisters with complete absence of transcobalamin due to homozygosity for a novel mutation (c.insC110) in the TCN2 gene that leads to a premature stop codon and non-functional protein. The older

Pernicious anaemia is the most common cause of cobalamin deficiency. Nervous disorders associated with cobalamin deficiency are neuropathy, optic atrophy, dementia and myelopathy (subacute combined degeneration). In this case, symptoms are those of posterior and lateral column dysfunction of the spinal cord, with diminished vibratory sensation, ataxia, weakness of limbs, hyperreflexia, extensor plantar response and spasticity. Macrocytosis and anaemia are often lacking. There is an inverse correlation between the degree of anaemia and the extent of nervous impairment. The most sensitive tool f

There is increasing evidence for an association between Alzheimer-type dementia (AD) and nutritionally independent cobalamin deficiency. Furthermore, low serum cobalamin values occur in a kindred with familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) and histopathological confirmation of AD neuropathology. The Cobalamin deficiency could be either a consequence or cause of amyloidogenesis. Cobalamin deficiency is also associated with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). A common pathogenic mechanism may exist for AIDS dementia complex (ADC) and AD, but there is no explanation at present for these as

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate vitamin B12 and D levels among long-term vegetarians and to assess the influence of their diet duration and diet subtypes on nutritional status in Beijing, China.
METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 104 vegetarians (84 vegans, 20 lacto-ovo vegetarians). Serum vitamin B12 and D levels were measured, and demographic, dietary, and supplement use data were collected. Statistical analyses included ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis tests, chi-square tests, and multivariate regressions.
RESULTS: The prevalence of vitamin

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D and vitamin B12 deficiencies are both widespread among older adults, yet their combined status is rarely examined within the same cohort and whether the two exposures interact or simply accumulate remains unresolved. This study examined the association between combined vitamin D and B12 status and cognitive, affective, and frailty outcomes in hospitalised older adults, and formally tested for an interaction between the two deficiencies.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1359 consecutive patients aged 65 years or older admitted for comprehensive geri

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Lhermitte's sign, a classical neurological sign, is a rare manifestation of vitamin B12 deficiency. The aim here was to report on a case of an elderly patient with vitamin B12 deficiency whose first clinical manifestation was the presence of Lhermitte's sign.
CASE REPORT: We describe an elderly patient with vitamin B12 deficiency who presented cognitive dysfunction, peripheral polyneuropathy and sensory ataxia, and whose first clinical manifestation was the presence of Lhermitte's sign. This sign is one of the rarest manifestations of vitamin B12 deficiency.

Neuropsychiatric syndromes occur in about 40% of Cbl-deficient patients and are characterized by progressive and variable damage to the spinal cord, peripheral nerves and cerebrum. The first abnormality is usually sensory impairment, most often presenting as distal and symmetrical paraesthesiae of the lower limbs and frequently associated with ataxia. Almost all patients demonstrate loss of vibratory sensation, often in association with diminished proprioception and cutaneous sensation and a Romberg sign. Corticospinal tract involvement is common in more advanced cases, with abnormal reflexes,

Background/Objectives: Severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder are often accompanied by metabolic comorbidities. While the role of vitamins in physical health is well-established, their involvement in psychiatric disorders has garnered increasing attention in recent years. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 1003 patients diagnosed with severe mental illnesses. Vitamin D, B9, and B12 serum levels were measured, and deficiencies were defined using established clinical cutoffs. Multivariate regression analyses were performed
