Etiopathogenesis and Emerging Methods for Treatment of Vitiligo.

Vitiligo is an acquired chronic depigmenting disorder of skin. It is mostly asymptomatic and characterized by amelanotic macules and patches that affects 0.5% to 2% of the world's population. The etiology of vitiligo has not been clearly elucidated and multiple theories have been proposed regarding the causes of the disorder. Among the most prevalent theories, the genetic predisposition, oxidative stress theory, promotion of cellular stress and pathologic influence of lymphocytes T have been highlighted. As a result of increases in in-depth knowledge concerning the pathogenetic processes in vi…

The Role of Regulatory Cell Death in Vitiligo.

Vitiligo is one of the common chronic autoimmune skin diseases in clinic, which is characterized by localized or generalized depigmentation and seriously affects the physical and mental health of patients. At present, the pathogenesis of vitiligo is not clear; mainly, heredity, autoimmunity, oxidative stress, melanocyte (MC) self-destruction, and the destruction, death, or dysfunction of MCs caused by various reasons are always the core of vitiligo. Regulatory cell death (RCD) is an active and orderly death mode of cells regulated by genes, which widely exists in various life activities, plays…

Ocular manifestations of vitiligo: a systematic review.

Vitiligo is a disorder characterized by loss of epidermal melanocytes, resulting in depigmented macules and patches. While the relationship between ocular pathology and vitiligo has been demonstrated in conditions such as Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada and Alezzandrini syndromes, the ocular associations of non-syndromic vitiligo are incompletely understood. We conducted a systematic review to comprehensively describe the structural and functional changes seen in the eyes of patients with vitiligo, to identify patients at heightened risk for ocular disease, and to provide an approach to management of ocu…

Psoriasis on Lesions of Vitiligo: A Case Report.

Vitiligo and psoriasis are common T cell-mediated autoimmune skin diseases, and the association of the two disorders has been well known. In most cases, vitiligo precedes the onset of psoriasis. In this study, we reported a case of vitiligo who developed psoriasis following an upper respiratory tract infection with a uniform shape of psoriatic lesions at the phototherapy site of vitiligo. After 2 months of discontinuation of phototherapy and concurrent treatment with topical corticosteroid and calcipotriol, the psoriasis lesions were significantly improved.

Audiological and vestibular evaluations in vitiligo patients.

The aim of this paper was to investigate audiological abnormalities and potential vestibular injury in a sample of vitiligo subjects. Thirty-five patients with non-segmental vitiligo (NSV) were enrolled in the study. They underwent pure tonal audiometry (PTA), vestibular Fitzgerald-Hallpike caloric test, C-VEM, and O-VEMP testing.  The χ2 test and multiple regression analysis were performed. At PTA, 69% of patients presented with bilateral hearing loss, 8% monaural hearing loss, and 23% normal values. Bilateral caloric stimulations were performed and demonstrated that 14% of patients had a mon…

Diet and Vitiligo: The Story So Far.

Vitiligo is an acquired skin pigmentation disease with a global burden of 0.5 to 2 percent of the population. Vitiligo therapy frequently poses a difficulty, which has sparked interest in alternative treatment modalities, including multivitamins and herbal supplementation. It has previously been established that nutrition plays a crucial role in developing, amplifying, or rehabilitating an array of human disorders. However, the correlation between diet diversity and immune-mediated skin diseases is still up to interpretation. Several supplements have been studied, including vitamins, minerals,…

MicroRNAs: Emerging players in the pathogenesis of vitiligo.

Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin disease characterized by presence of pale patchy areas of depigmentation. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are important regulators of gene expression and play significant roles in diverse biological and pathological processes. Accumulating evidence has shown that miRNAs were differentially expressed in skin lesions and peripheral blood mononuclear cells of patients with vitiligo. In particular, miRNAs are significantly correlated with the development and progression of vitiligo. The abundance of some miRNAs in serum was also correlated with the vitiligo lesion severity, indic…

S1 Guideline: Diagnosis and therapy of vitiligo.

Vitiligo is a common skin disorder characterized by immune-mediated destruction of melanocytes. Non-segmental vitiligo, the most common clinical subtype, has usually a chronic course and often results in significant psychosocial consequences for the affected patient. Early recognition, awareness of comorbidity, precise assessment of disease extent and activity, evaluation of impairment of quality of life as well as rapid initiation of treatment based on currently available evidence-based therapies are crucial cornerstones in the management of vitiligo. This S1 guideline helps German dermatolog…

Vitiligo and the Role of Newer Therapeutic Modalities.

Our understanding of the etiology of vitiligo, which is now categorically recognized as an autoimmune illness characterized by the occurrence of chalky-white patches over the skin as a consequence of focal melanocyte loss, has made significant strides in recent years. The notion that vitiligo results from a mix of etiologic factors that affect melanocyte functionality rather than solely due to underlying mutations, melanocytes reacting to chemical or radiation exposure, or hyperreactive T cells, has undoubtedly remained consistent. Since then, new research has contributed to our understanding …

[Repigmentation in vitiligo universalis triggered by hemodialysis].

Vitiligo is an acquired depigmenting disorder. Vitiligo universalis is a rare form responsible for significant aesthetic damage. To date, the exact pathogenesis remains unknown. Its treatment, a real challenge, consists rather in removing the still pigmented areas. We report a case of a patient followed for stable vitiligo universalis from an early age who presented with repigmentation shortly after initiation of hemodialysis.

Autoimmunity in vitiligo: Therapeutic implications and opportunities.

Vitiligo is an acquired chronic pigmentary disorder affecting the melanocytes, mainly in the skin and mucosae. It occurs due to the dynamic interaction between genetic and environmental factors leading to autoimmune destruction of melanocytes. Defects in melanocyte adhesion and increased oxidative stress further augment the immune response in vitiligo. It is a cosmetically disfiguring condition with a substantial psychological burden. Its autoimmune nature with resultant chronicity, variable responses to therapeutic modalities, and frequent recurrences have further diminished the quality of li…
