First Sounds, Second Language: How Word Onsets Spark Language Co-Activation in 3-Year-Old Bilinguals.

Adult and young bilinguals co-activate their languages to different degrees, even in entirely monolingual tasks. However, many studies use translation pairs with high phonological overlap (e.g., the English-GERMAN: "milk"-"MILCH"), making it difficult to discern the origin of the co-activation. This study examined language co-activation in Catalan-Spanish bilingual toddlers using words with minimal phonological overlap across translations. Thirty Catalan-Spanish bilingual three-year-olds (N  =  30; Mage =  36.38 months, range = 35.57-37.43) participated in a visual word paradigm conducted enti

For reading comprehension, mediation effects of preliteracy and vocabulary skills were observed. CONCLUSIONS: The relation between speech sound production accuracy and subsequent word reading, decoding, reading fluency, and comprehension was observed to be mediated by preliteracy skills, specifically phonological awarenes …

Moreover, at 6 months postintervention, the gist (content) of the rhymes and the meaning of vocabulary items from the texts were robustly retained, with an advantage for the recitation group. Toward Understanding the Lexical-Morphological Networks of Children With Specific Language Impairment: Analysis of Responses on a Morphological Production Task.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to characterize the lexical-morphological networks of children with specific language impairment (SLI) compared to children with typical language by analyzing responses on a morphological derived form production task. Method School-age children with SLI (n = 32) and peers with typical language (n = 40) completed an oral cloze derived form production task (Carlisle, 2000). On this task, children were expected to complete verbally presented sentences with a derived form of a provided morphological stem. Responses were coded as correct or incorrect following

Variations within a subtype: Developmental surface dyslexias in English.

Surface dyslexia is characterised by poor reading of irregular words while nonword reading can be completely normal. Previous work has identified several theoretical possibilities for the underlying locus of impairment in surface dyslexia. In this study, we systematically investigated whether children with surface dyslexia showed different patterns of reading performance that could be traced back to different underlying levels of impairment. To do this, we tested 12 English readers, replicating previous work in Hebrew (Gvion & Friedmann, 2013; 2016; Friedmann & Lukov, 2008; Friedmann & Gvion,

SYMPTOM PRESENTATIONS AND CLASSIFICATION OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER IN EARLY CHILDHOOD: APPLICATION TO THE DIAGNOSTIC CLASSIFICATION OF MENTAL HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS OF INFANCY AND EARLY CHILDHOOD (DC:0-5).

Over the past 5 years, a great deal of information about the early course of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has emerged from longitudinal prospective studies of infants at high risk for developing ASD based on a previously diagnosed older sibling. The current article describes early ASD symptom presentations and outlines the rationale for defining a new disorder, Early Atypical Autism Spectrum Disorder (EA-ASD) to accompany ASD in the new revision of the ZERO TO THREE Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood (DC:0-5) (in press) alter

Word-attack skills in individuals with mental retardation.

This article assesses the state of the literature on word-attack skills and phonological awareness (PA) in individuals with mental retardation, in light of progress towards the development of effective teaching procedures. The literature contains promising findings. Studies have shown PA to be correlated with word-attack skills in individuals with mental retardation, as has been shown conclusively in typically developing children. This suggests that instruction in PA would facilitate the acquisition of word-attack skills in individuals with mental retardation, as it does with typically develop

The prevalence of poor reading in Dutch special elementary education.

The relative frequency of poor readers in Dutch general elementary education (GEE) and special elementary education (SEE) and the characteristics of their reading performance were investigated using a lexical decision procedure. According to the same norms that identified 9% of students as poor readers in GEE, no less than 73% of the students in SEE were classified as poor readers. On average, the GEE poor readers were better readers than those in SEE, but the findings do not point to substantial differences in reading processes between the two reader groups. Hypotheses about the nature of the

The blocking effect of pictorial prompts on sight-word reading.

This study replicates and extends previous work showing that pictorial prompts can interfere with the learning of sight words by students with moderate mental retardation. Effects of training with 6 students were assessed during five conditions using an alternating treatments design. In four conditions, words were presented either alone or with a corresponding picture. In a fifth condition, pictures were used to provide feedback. The results showed that acquisition was achieved fastest during the word-alone conditions with 5 students.

Understanding individual differences in word recognition skills of ESL children.

This paper focuses on the extent to which the development of ESL (English as a Second Language) word recognition skills mimics similar trajectories in same-aged EL1 (English as a First Language) children, and the extent to which phonological processing skills and rapid naming can be used to predict word recognition performance in ESL children. Two cohorts of Grade 1 ESL and EL1 primary-level children were followed for two consecutive years. Results indicated that vocabulary knowledge, a measure of language proficiency, and nonverbal intelligence were not significant predictors of word recognit…

Automatization aspects of dyslexia: speed limitations in word identification, sensitivity to increasing task demands, and orthographic compensation.

A study is presented in which three characteristics of dyslexia were examined: (a) speed limitations in word identification, (b) sensitivity to increasing task demands, and (c) orthographic compensation. Ten students with dyslexia (10 years old) were compared to 10 chronological-age controls and 20 reading-age controls on their performance in reading. Response latencies of the students with dyslexia were slower when familiar words, letter clusters, and nonwords had to be named. A larger word-frequency effect and a larger word-length effect in the these students indicates that they have difficu

Demographic and clinical correlates of selective information processing in patients with bulimia nervosa.

Demographic and clinical correlates of interference with color-naming words related to eating, weight, and shape were investigated in 75 patients with bulimia nervosa. Interference with color-naming was related to two measures, overall level of psychiatric symptoms and frequency of purging. Multiple regression analysis showed that frequency of purging, and not level of general psychiatric symptoms, was the best predictor of interference. Thus, as would be predicted by cognitive theories, interference appears to be most closely related to features specific to bulimia nervosa rather than to meas

Readability of the Depression Adjective Check Lists (DACL) and the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List-Revised (MAACL-R).

To determine the readability of the Depression Adjective Check Lists (DACL; Lubin, 1981) and the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List-Revised (MAACL-R; Zuckerman & Lubin, 1985), each adjective on the two instruments was assigned its grade level readability designation from the Dale and O'Rourke (1981) compendium. Median readability level of each of the seven DACL lists was sixth grade with an average of 80% of each list at or below the eighth-grade level. For the MAACL-R, median readability level for each of the seven scales was fourth grade except for Hostility, which was at the sixth-grade l

Artificial intelligence in pituitary medicine: what should an endocrinologist know?

Pituitary disorders often include complex radiology imaging, rare clinical presentations, and need for multidisciplinary decision-making and prolonged follow-up, all features that make them a natural target for artificial intelligence (AI). The resulting literature is expanding rapidly, but carries an unfamiliar vocabulary and set of methods, which can leave clinicians without a clear entry point. This short perspective offers such an entry point, succinctly outlining how AI learns from data, how a clinical AI application moves from question to deployment, providing examples, and addressing ho…

Short forms of the WAIS-R with psychiatric inpatients: a comparison of techniques.

The relative performance of six Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised short forms (Brooker & Cyr, 1986; Reynolds, Wilson, & Clark, 1983; Silverstein, 1982) was examined for a group of psychiatric inpatients (N = 50). Short forms were evaluated according to their ability to predict the Full Scale IQ using regression analysis. The standard error of estimate was significantly smaller for Silverstein's (1982) four-subtest short form, which consists of Vocabulary, Arithmetic, Picture Arrangement, and Block Design. Using the Silverstein (1982) tables, 90% of the short form IQs fell within +/- 6 …

Development of derivational morphological knowledge in monolingual and bilingual children: Effects of modality and lexicality.

This study mapped the trajectory of developing derivational morphological knowledge in Hebrew monolingual and Russian-Hebrew bilingual children. We investigated 2nd and 4th graders, using a two-by-two structure along the dimensions of modality (comprehension, production) and type of word (real-word, pseudo-word). Performance in the morphological analogies comprehension tasks improved with grade, and monolingual and bilingual children performed equally well. A different pattern was evident in production tasks. In real-word production, monolingual children were more accurate than bilingual child
