[Parameters of phoniatric examination of solo vocalists].

INTRODUCTION: A phoniatrist analyzes the professional's voice at the beginning of his vocal studies or career but also later, in cases of voice disorder. Phoniatric examination of professional singers must be done according to "all inclusive" protocols of examination. Such protocols must establish the status of basic elements of phonatory system: activator, generator and resonator of voice and articulatory space. ANAMNESIS: All patients requiring phoniatric examination no matter if they are candidates for professional singers, need to provide anamnestic data about their previous problems rega

Analysis of the vocal profiles of male seduction: from exhibition to self-disclosure.

The authors analyzed the suprasegmental (temporary) vocal profiles of 19 young men (not married) during their seductive interaction with 19 young women (not married) whom they had not known previously. The aim of the research was to verify the specificity, the sequential temporal stream, and the efficacy of the acoustical features of the seducer's voice during seductive interaction. In an ecological laboratory situation, the male participants were asked to meet their female partners. Participant-by-participant analysis showed that the male seductive voice is characterized by strong variations

Vocal fold microsurgery in singers.

Some singers with benign vocal fold mucosal lesions remain unacceptably impaired vocally in spite of compliance with a regimen of medical treatment and voice therapy lasting several months-or even years. I present here my experience with 62 singers who, because of this predicament, chose to undergo vocal fold microsurgery. This series is the second largest reported to date in English literature. Procedures are presented which were used for patient selection, education, and vocal retraining, as well as for surgery itself and postoperative care. Results reported here include (a) comparison of my

Relation between voice sound pressure and subglottal pressure as a diagnostic cue.

Voice sound pressure and esophageal pressure amplitudes are measured for 120 subjects with and without laryngeal status. The esophageal pressure amplitudes are taken as a approximation of the subglottal pressure. The dependency of sound pressure on subglottal pressure is approximated by a nonlinear function. The slope of the function represents the pressure transformation from subglottal pressure to sound pressure at fixed vocal tract configuration. Therefore, the slope is taken as a characterization of the efficiency of the voice organ. This quantity allows rough statement about the efficienc

[Association between laryngeal findings and vocal qualities in muscle tension dysphonia with supraglottic contraction].

Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is a voice disorder associated with abnormal laryngeal posture or glottic configuration induced by excessive contraction of the laryngeal muscles, and supraglottic contraction is one of the characteristic findings in MTD. In recent study we investigated the changes in laryngeal findings and voice quality and the association between them in the course of voice therapy for MTD with supraglottic contraction. The effects of voice therapy on the laryngeal and the vocal findings were assessed by two rating methods: the MTD score and the conventional GRBAS scores and bo…

A Randomized, Controlled Trial of Behavioral Voice Therapy for Dysphonia Related to Prematurity of Birth.

OBJECTIVES: Dysphonia is a potential complication of prematurity. Preterm children may sustain iatrogenic laryngeal damage from medical intervention in the neonatal period, and further, adopt compensatory, maladaptive voicing behaviors. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the effects of a voice therapy protocol on voice quality in school-aged, very preterm (VP) children. METHODS: Twenty-seven VP children with dysphonia were randomized to an immediate intervention group (n = 7) or a delayed-intervention, waiting list control group (n = 14). Following analysis of these data, a secondary analysis…

Acoustic changes in voice after surgery for snoring: preliminary results.

All surgical procedures for treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea modify the anatomical structure of the upper airways and the resonance characteristics of the vocal tract; this can lead to a modification in voice quality. Purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible modifications of the fundamental frequency (F0) and of the frequency and amplitude of the first (F1) and second (F2) formants of the 5 Italian vowels after different surgical procedures for snoring, to verify if and how these operations can influence voice quality. A total of 40 snoring or obstructive sleep apnoe…

Trans Woman Voice Questionnaire Scores Highlight Specific Benefits of Adjunctive Glottoplasty With Voice Therapy in Treating Voice Feminization.

BACKGROUND: Treatment options to assist patients to produce a more perceptually feminine voice include voice therapy (VT) and surgeries to elevate pitch such as the Wendler glottoplasty (WG). The Trans Woman Voice Questionnaire (TWVQ) is a validated quality of life measure for trans women's self-reported perceptions of their voice and is frequently administered before and after such interventions. The 30 statements broadly pertain to how feminine a patient feels their voice is, how effortful it is to produce their voice, and how their voice impacts them psychosocially, making it a useful and s

Common practices of voice therapists in the evaluation of patients.

This study surveys voice therapists regarding common diagnostic practices in patients referred for therapy with the diagnosis of muscle tension dysphonia (broadly defined as the "hyperfunctional" component of the dysphonia). Through postings on the e-mail list of the ASHA special interest division on voice, speech pathologists with at least 3 years' experience in stroboscopy and acoustic instrumentation were invited to complete the survey. Results from 53 completed surveys demonstrated that voice quality and patient self-perception are the sole assessments performed by all therapists. Voice qu…

Voice characteristics in adults with neurofibromatosis type 1.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant neurocutaneous disorder caused by mutations in the NF1 gene, which is located at the long arm of chromosome 17. Major characteristics include multiple café-au-lait spots and neurofibromas. Voice abnormalities have been reported to occur in this patient group. However, most studies relied on subjective measurements only. The present study reports the results of an objective voice assessment based on a multiparameter approach in 22 adults with NF1. Aerodynamic measurements, voice range profiles, acoustic voice quality and intonation measure…
