In this paper, we describe a computer program (RESP-24) specifically devised to assess the prevalence and characteristics of breathing disorders in ambulant chronic heart failure patients during the overall 24 h period. The system works on a single channel respiratory signal (RS) recorded through a Holter-like portable device. In the pre-processing stage RESP-24 removes noise, baseline drift and motion artefacts from the RS using a non-linear filter, enhances respiratory frequency components through high-pass filtering and derives an instantaneous tidal volume (ITV) signal. The core processing

Respiratory auscultation involves listening to and interpreting sounds from within the chest. Undertaking respiratory auscultation effectively requires appropriate equipment, knowledge of physiology and pathophysiology and experience in listening to and interpreting breath sounds. Nurses undertaking this procedure must ensure they have the knowledge and skills to do so and work within the limits of their competence. This article provides a step-by-step guide that explains how to undertake respiratory auscultation with infants and children aged 0-16 years. • Respiratory auscultation is an essen

The objectives of this study were to measure the population prevalence of symptoms of chronic obstructive lung disease and mild airway obstruction and to compare these between occupational groups. There were 1,609 subjects (63.9% response rate) who completed a respiratory questionnaire. Of these, 1,132 (70.4%) underwent pulmonary function testing (FEV1 and FVC). Twenty-one categories of current occupation were used for analysis. Four definitions of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were used: (1) chronic bronchitis, (2) chronic bronchitis with airway obstruction, (3) shortness of br

The effects of midazolam on hemodynamic measures were evaluated in 30 patients scheduled for cardiac surgery. The patients were spontaneously breathing 40% oxygen in air and no postural changes or surgical manipulations were allowed before or during the study. Before and 10 minutes after completion of the intravenous infusion of 0.2 mg/kg of midazolam, the following hemodynamic variables were determined: direct radial artery pressure, pulmonary artery pressure, central venous pressure, cardiac output by thermodilution in triplicate via a Swan-Ganz pulmonary artery catheter, and electrocardiogr

A surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor built on a free-standing Au/Cu-covalent organic framework (COF) membrane was developed for the noninvasive Helicobacter pylori detection by quantifying trace ammonia in exhaled breath. The porphyrin-based Cu-COF acts as a multifunctional sensing interface, using its porous structure and accessible porphyrin-Cu coordination sites to efficiently capture and preconcentrate ammonia vapor. The change of intensity of the characteristic SERS peak at the 391 cm-1 Raman peak (ΔI391) shows a good linear relationship with ammonia concentration in the rang

Standard cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) produces a rich dataset but its current analysis is often limited to a few derived variables such as maximal or peak oxygen uptake (V̇O2). We tested whether breath-by-breath CPET data could be used to determine sample entropy (SampEn) in 81 healthy children and adolescents (age 7-18 years old, equal sex distribution). To overcome challenges of the relatively small time-series CPET data size and its nonstationarity, we developed a Python algorithm for short-duration physiological signals. Comparing pre- and post-ventilatory threshold (VT1) CPET p

Sleep disordered breathing is common in patients with tetraplegia. Nocturnal arterial hypoxemia and sleep fragmentation due to sleep apnoea may be associated with cognitive dysfunction. We therefore studied the influence of sleep disordered breathing on neuropsychological function in 37 representative tetraplegic patients (mean age 34 +/- 9.7 years). Thirty percent (11 of 37 patients) had clinically significant sleep disordered breathing, defined as apnoea plus hypopnoea index (AHI) greater than 15 per hour of sleep. Most apnoeas were obstructive in type. Seven patients (19%) desaturated to <

OBJECTIVE: This paper examines the integration of a noninvasive vital sign monitoring feature into the workers' hearing protection devices (HPDs) by using a microphone positioned within the earcanal under the HPD.
METHODS: 25 test-subjects were asked to breathe at various rhythms and intensities and these realistic sound events were recorded in the earcanal. Digital signal processing algorithms were then developed to assess heart and breathing rates. Finally, to test the robustness of theses algorithms in noisy work environments, industrial noise was added to the in-ear recorded signals and a

Despite the importance and wide use of aerosol samplers, their basic characteristics including gas flow dynamics, sampling, and aspiration efficiency are still not fully understood and characterized. This is especially the case when a personal inhalable sampler operates under conditions of calm or slowly moving air. Under such conditions, the results may be affected by the breathing of the person. The development of the next generation of sampling devices should be facilitated by the improved knowledge derived from mathematical studies of particle motion in the complex flows around bluff bodie

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The accuracy and precision of radiation therapy are dependent on the characterization of organ-at-risk and target motion. This work aims to demonstrate a 4D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method for improving spatial and temporal resolution in respiratory motion imaging for treatment planning in abdominothoracic radiotherapy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The spatial and temporal resolution of phase-resolved respiratory imaging is improved by considering a novel sampling function based on quasi-random projection-encoding and peripheral k-space view-sharing. The respiratory

Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) has become the standard of care for patients with a range of respiratory and sleep breathing disorders. Technological advances have enabled the development of several newer modes of automatically adapting NIV suitable for patients with more complex breathing abnormalities that may be difficult to manage effectively with more traditional positive airway pressure therapy. These modes allow for more stable ventilation when fluctuating ventilation requirements occur such as in positional upper airway obstruction or state-related variations in respiratory mechanics an

INTRODUCTION: Respiration is increasingly recognized as a key modulator of brain-body interactions, influencing both neural and autonomic dynamics. While prior work has demonstrated respiratory-driven entrainment, it remains unclear whether distinct phases of the breathing cycle give rise to different dynamical regimes of cortical activity.
METHODS: In this study, we investigated respiratory-phase-dependent modulation of brain-heart interactions during controlled breathing, focusing on breath-hold periods following inhalation and exhalation. EEG band power time series and heart rate (HR) were

Multiple factors may contribute to the dyspnea associated with restrictive ventilatory disease (RVD). Simple models that examine specific features of this problem are likely to provide insight into the mechanisms. Previous models of RVD utilizing elastic loads may not represent completely the impact on pulmonary and chest wall receptors derived from breathing at low thoracic volumes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the sensory consequences of breathing at low lung volumes induced by external thoracic restriction in an attempt to further elucidate the etiology of dyspnea in this se

Morphometric studies in animals exposed to ozone (O3), and mathematical simulations of O3 transport in human lungs indicate that O3 toxicity is focal in nature, causing tissue damage that is more pronounced in the proximal alveolar region (the proximal end of the respiratory airspaces in our compartment models) than in other airways. These findings suggest that the internal distribution of O3 uptake must be known in order to assess health risk reliably. In previous work (Ultman and Ben-Jebria 1990), we developed a fast-responding chemiluminescent O3 analyzer and a small-scale O3 generator, bot

Healthy aging is associated with a progressive decline in respiratory function and altered ventilatory mechanics, typically characterized on static physiological measurements. We aimed to evaluate the ventilatory response to exhaustive exercise across the age-span and hypothesized that aging would be associated with inefficient alterations that may be relevant in the etiology of breathlessness. We analyzed ventilatory data obtained from cardiopulmonary exercise tests performed in 526 healthy adults (aged 20-91 years; 52% female) from the COmPLETE cohort. Sample Entropy (SampEn) was used to qua

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The differential diagnosis for exercise-associated breathlessness is broad, however, when a young athletic individual presents with respiratory symptoms, they are most often prescribed inhaler therapy for presumed exercise-induced asthma (EIA). The purpose of this study was therefore to use a novel sound-based approach to assessment to evaluate the prevalence of exertional respiratory symptoms and characterise abnormal breathing sounds in a large cohort of recreationally active individuals.
METHODS: Cross-sectional field-based evaluation of individuals completing Par

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to determine the presence and prevalence of alterations in cardiac autonomic function in obese, non-diabetic subjects.
SUBJECTS: These were 121 obese people, 15 with glucose intolerance and none with diabetes, and a group of 40 healthy people.
MEASUREMENTS: A series of five standardized tests was carried out, three of which were based mainly on parasympathetic control (heart rate response to Valsalva, deep breathing and lying-to-standing) and two on cardiovascular sympathetic function (blood pressure response to standing and to handgrip).
RESULTS: The res

OBJECTIVES: Neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy (NEHI) is a children's interstitial and diffuse lung disease of unknown etiology that presents in infancy with characteristic findings of tachypnea, retractions, crackles, and hypoxemia. At the present, the mainstay of treatment is oxygen supplementation to normalize oxygen saturations and decrease work of breathing. There are characteristic pulmonary function, radiographic, and histologic findings, but polysomnography (PSG) data has not been reported. We sought to report PSG data and implications for management and treatment of NEHI patie…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The standard therapy for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. However, long-term adherence remains at ~50% despite improvements in behavioural and educational interventions. Based on prior work, we explored whether regularity of breathing during wakefulness might be a physiologic predictor of CPAP adherence.
METHODS: Of the 117 consecutive patients who were diagnosed with OSA and prescribed CPAP, 79 CPAP naïve patients were enrolled in this prospective study. During CPAP initiation, respiratory signals were collected u
