Emergency radiology in displaced populations: imaging and practical challenges.

Migrants and refugees tend to use emergency departments as their primary source of care, leading to a substantial increase in emergency radiological imaging. Migrants and refugees have risk factors, such as low vaccination rates, poor hygiene, malnutrition, and inadequate self-care, which increase their risk of contracting infectious diseases. For example, the prevalence of tuberculosis among refugee populations in host countries is increasing, and imaging findings related to tuberculosis are frequently observed by radiologists. Strengthening screening programs in host countries for tuberculos

Violence, policing, and systemic racism as structural barriers to substance use treatment amongst women sex workers who use drugs: Findings of a community-based cohort in Vancouver, Canada (2010-2019).

BACKGROUND: Despite a high prevalence of substance use among women sex workers (SWs), rigorous social epidemiologic data on substance use treatment experiences among SWs remains limited. Given these gaps and the disproportionate burden of criminalization borne by Indigenous SWs, we evaluated (1) structural correlates of unsuccessful attempts to access substance use treatment; and (2) the interaction between policing and Indigenous ancestry on unsuccessful attempts to access treatment among SWs who use drugs. METHODS: Prospective data were from an open community-based cohort of women SWs (2010

Assessment of violence against patients by healthcare providers at the point of service delivery in Sekyere south district.

BACKGROUND: While violence against healthcare workers has been widely studied, violence against patients (VAP) by healthcare professionals remains underreported and poorly addressed. Scrutinizing patients' feedback is crucial to understanding VAP, preventing abuse recurrence, and strengthening the healthcare system's integrity. The purpose of the study was to help determine the prevalence, extent, and healthcare workers category associated with VAP. METHODS: Quantitative research approach was used and was non-interventional descriptive cross-sectional. Data collected was analyzed using descri

MORAL INJURY.

The devastating effect on the self of moral injury, often a core component of trauma, occurring when one's actions have profoundly violated one's code of ethics, when one has been a victim of such violation, or when one has been a passive witness, has been extensively explored as it has occurred in veterans of the wars in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Two examples illustrate its prevalence in civilian life. The literature shows violation of expected empathy from and for others, inherent in our nature, is more devastating than violation of the ethical code of our culture or sub-culture, adhere

"We could do more": exploring violance prevention measures in German outpatient primary care - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers in general practice are exposed to verbal and physical violence from patients and accompanying persons. While research has predominantly focused on hospital settings, evidence on violence prevention in primary care remains limited. General practice staff often report feeling insufficiently prepared to manage aggressive behaviour. This study explored staff perceptions of violence prevention measures in outpatient care, including perceived usefulness, implementation barriers, and unmet needs. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted involving 45 semi-structured

A scoping review of the impact of organisational factors on providers and related interventions in LMICs: Implications for respectful maternity care.

We have limited understanding of the organisational issues at the health facility-level that impact providers and care as it relates to mistreatment in childbirth, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). By extension, it is not clear what types of facility-level organisational changes or changes in working environments in LMICs could support and enable respectful maternity care (RMC). While there has been relatively more attention to health system pressures related to shortages of staff and other resources as key barriers, other organisational challenges may be less explored in

The effects of adherence to professional identity, workplace aggression, and felt accountability on child protection workers' professional quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Child protection workers (CPWs) are exposed to physical and psychological violence initiated by clients. The consequences associated with exposure to this type of trauma and others are compounded by the anxiety generated by the feelings of being accountable and the constant scrutiny and monitoring CPWs are under. Previous research suggests that acting according to one's professional values can help protect against the effects of trauma exposure and the anxiety associated with being held accountable when situations devolve into crises. The risk of assault against mental health professionals: a fatal case report and literature review.

Assaults by patients against healthcare providers are an increasing phenomenon worldwide. Mental health professionals in acute facilities and rehabilitation wards have the highest risk of being attacked at work. Verbal abuse or intimidating behaviors represent the most common types of violence. Fatal assault by psychiatric patients has been rarely reported in the literature. We present a case of a female psychiatrist who was fatally stabbed in her office in a Mental Health Center. At autopsy seventy stab wounds were found: four wounds of the neck, fifty penetrating wounds of the thorax, three

'It's a love-hate relationship': female crown prosecutors' experiences of prosecuting sexual violence and abuse cases.

This study used interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) to examine six female New Zealand Crown prosecutors' (CPs') experiences of working with adult and child sexual violence and abuse (SVA) cases. Three themes were developed from the data: navigating the emotional and legal aspects of the role without a compass, the impacts of working with potentially traumatic material, and factors influencing wellbeing and help seeking. Working with SVA cases was viewed as rewarding by participants; however, exposure to sexual trauma was perceived to exacerbate occupational stressors and impacts of wo

Perspectives of physicians on risk factors for patient aggression and violence against physicians in Chinese hospitals: a Q-methodology study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of patient (and their relatives/friends) aggression and violence against healthcare professionals in general, and physicians in particular, is a recognized problem worldwide. While numerous risk factors for such aggression and violence from patients (and their relatives/friends) have been identified, little is known about which risk factors are perceived as relatively most important in a specific context and among a particular group, and about the potentially differing views on the relative importance. This lack of insight prohibits preventive measures being tailored

Complexities of short-term mobility for sex work and migration among sex workers: violence and sexual risks, barriers to care, and enhanced social and economic opportunities.

Despite research on the health and safety of mobile and migrant populations in the formal and informal sectors globally, limited information is available regarding the working conditions, health, and safety of sex workers who engage in short-term mobility and migration. The objective of this study was to longitudinally examine work environment, health, and safety experiences linked to short-term mobility/migration (i.e., worked or lived in another city, province, or country) among sex workers in Vancouver, Canada, over a 2.5-year study period (2010-2012). We examined longitudinal correlates of
