Subjects in an disease-endemic area in Orissa, India concomitantly infected with filariasis and intestinal helminths had significantly lower intensity of filarial infection in comparison with those who were infected only with filariasis. Administration of albendazole resulted in a significant decrease in the prevalence of filarial antigenemia in subjects concomitantly infected with intestinal helminths, but produced little change in this infection measure in subjects infected only with Wuchereria bancrofti. These results indicate that intestinal helminths could play a role in the anti-filarial…

Ultrasonographic examination of the scrotal area was performed in 14 asymptomatic individuals with bancroftian filariasis and microfilaremia. While in seven subjects (50%) the ultrasonographic findings were normal, lymphatic dilation and tortuosity were observed in the other seven. In these vessels, structures with peculiar aleatory movements (filaria dance sign) were detected. A segment of the lymphatic tract containing these mobile intraluminal structures that was resected surgically from the left spermatic cord of one individual confirmed that these structures were living Wuchereria bancrof…

Lymphatic filariasis is endemic in a few states of India and is one of the most common public health concerns. Wuchereria bancrofti (W. bancrofti) is the most common parasite that causes lymphatic filariasis in India. Microfilariae have been commonly found in the peripheral blood and body fluid, as well as demonstrated in fine needle aspirates (FNA) and bronchial cytology. They have been rarely reported in bone marrow aspirates. Due to the nocturnal periodicity of W. bancrofti, it may be missed in peripheral blood during the day. Though peripheral eosinophilia is a presenting feature of filari…

Filariasis is among the common parasitic infestations found in India, with Wuchereria bancrofti being the most common causative organism. Presentation ranges from clinically asymptomatic to profound elephantiasis. It is also detected incidentally in diagnostic samples such as body fluids, fine needle aspirates, peripheral blood smears, and other cytological smears. Its detection in bone marrow aspirates with an associated hematolymphoid neoplasm is rare, with only a few case reports. We report one such case of young male who presented with leukocytosis of 253 × 109/L with basophilia and massiv…

A series of pleuromutilins modified by introduction of a boron-containing heterocycle on C(14) of the polycyclic core are described. These analogs were found to be potent anti- Wolbachia antibiotics and, as such, may be useful in the treatment of filarial infections caused by Onchocerca volvulus, resulting in Onchocerciasis or river blindness, or Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi and related parasitic nematodes resulting in lymphatic filariasis. These two important neglected tropical diseases disproportionately impact patients in the developing world. The lead preclinical candidate compou…

Lymphedema is the edema that results from chronic lymphatic insufficiency. Lymphatic filariasis is caused by the filarial nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori. Lymphatic filariasis is common in tropical and subtropical regions. Early diagnosis and prompt therapy can be implemented using lymphoscintigraphy. Our patient is a 15-year-old boy presenting with a 3-month history of hydrocele. The patient was referred to us to rule out any lower limb lymphatic obstruction as the patient is from an endemic area. Tc Sulfur colloid (filtered) lymphoscintigraphy showed abnormal…

Infection with Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, or B. timori not only affects the structure and function of lymphatic vessels but is also associated with extralymphatic pathology and disease. Because it is now possible to detect living adult worms by ultrasonography, much emphasis is placed on lymphatic pathology. However, the finding of renal damage in asymptomatic microfilaremic carriers has led to increased recognition of the importance of extralymphatic clinical manifestation in bancroftian filariasis. The authors present a number of clinical syndromes that may be manifestations of ext…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Filariae are parasitic worms that include the pathogens Loa loa, Onchocerca volvulus, Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia spp. and Mansonella spp. which are endemic in parts of Africa, Asia, Asia-Pacific, South and Central America. Filariae have a wide clinical spectrum spanning asymptomatic infection to chronic debilitating disease including blindness and lymphedema. Despite successful eradication programmes, filarial infections remain an important -albeit neglected - source of morbidity. We sought to characterize the risk of transfusion transmission of microfilaria with a…

BACKGROUND: Filariasis is a common cause of morbidity in certain parts of India, especially in the Coastal Districts. Repeated episodes of fever with chills and rigor, lymphadenopathy are the initial manifestations which gradually progress to elephantiasis. Wuchereria bancrofti is the most common parasite causing lymphatic filariasis in India. Detecting microfilaria in peripheral blood with or without Diethylcarbamazine citrate provocation is the common diagnostic modality in suspected cases. However microfilaria has been accidentally detected in fine needle aspirates, aspirated body fluids an…

The way a particular subject is understood changes over time as a result of scientific research. In most cases, these changes are minor, wit … e a profound changes in our reference points. For lymphatic filariasis the old paradigm stated that Wuchereria bancrofti at the adult stage causes lymphatic vessel obstruction, triggering an inevitable immune response in predisposed individuals and leading to elephantiasis. This has been replaced by a new paradigm, which offers hope that W. bancrofti infecti …

Although morphology is generally limited to static images, the histopathological features of bancroftian lymphatic disease are presented here in a way that is as dynamic as possible and closely associated with the clinical, ultrasonographic and surgical characteristics. The protean spectrum of alterations seen in the host's lymphatic vessels is discussed, and the changes caused by the live and dead worms are highlighted, as independent events. Evidence of a remodelling process, in which the lymphatic endothelial cells appear to have a key role, is provided for the first time. Despite many new

Filariasis control including a preparatory phase in the early 50s and two more extensive campaigns in the late 50s and 70s, has gained remarkable achievements. By the end of 1987, filariasis in 781 (90.4%) of 864 counties/cities was brought under control, i.e., the microfilariasis rate declined to less than 1% in the whole population in every village concerned. At present, there remain about 2,446,000 filariasis cases, accounting for 7.9% of 30,099,400 before nationwide campaigns. Microfilaria carriers among the remaining cases amounted to 1,473,000 and amicrofilaremic but symptomatic, to 973,
