Hidden distress: a qualitative study of sociocultural barriers to mental health help-seeking among young people in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Sociocultural barriers are powerful forces that may shape how young people experience, interpret, and respond to psychological distress in Zimbabwe. For many youth (aged 15-24 years), symptoms of common mental disorders (CMDs) are navigated within social environments where disclosure risks labelling, social exclusion, and moral judgment. This stigma is rarely experienced in isolation; it intersects with pressures to protect family reputation, distrust in formal and informal support systems, and gendered expectations governing emotional expression. While existing research has docume…

Insights from a trend analysis of HIV indicators using Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (PHIA) surveys in Zimbabwe.

INTRODUCTION: To fight HIV, the Universal Test and Treat (UTT) HIV program was introduced and has been praised for improving HIV outcomes in many settings but also faces criticism for abbreviated counselling impacting adherence, and implementation challenges in resource-limited settings. Therefore, we aimed to assess the changes in ART enrollment, HIV viral load suppression, and adherence to ART between 2015 and 2020, a period that coincided with the implementation of the UTT program in Zimbabwe. METHODS: We used data from nationally representative surveys before (2015, n = 2,792) and after (2…

Identification of intrinsic capacity impairment: diagnostic performance of integrated care for older people (ICOPE) screening tools in Zimbabwe.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization (WHO) Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) framework proposes screening (Step-1) and subsequent in-depth assessment (Step-2) to inform personalised interventions to promote intrinsic capacity (IC) in older adults. We aimed to assess the diagnostic performance of screening approaches against in-depth assessments in Zimbabwe. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited older adults age ≥65 years in urban Zimbabwe. For both Steps 1 and 2, IC was assessed using WHO ICOPE-proposed and/or alternative assessments for seven domains: cognition, locomot…

Intrafamilial Child Sexual Abuse: A Unique Silent Epidemic. Perspectives of Victim-Friendly Court Professionals in Marondera District, Zimbabwe.

Intrafamilial child sexual abuse is the commonest, though the under-reported, form of child sexual abuse in Marondera District and Zimbabwe generally. However, little is known about what drives it and what practitioners know about it. This study explored the factors associated with the incidence of intrafamilial child sexual abuse in Marondera based on perceptions of Victim-Friendly Court professionals in the district. A semi-structured questionnaire was administered to twenty-five professionals from thirteen agencies implementing the Victim-Friendly Court initiative in Marondera. Relevant cou…

Seroprevalence of Cytomegalovirus Infection Among HIV-Infected and HIV-Uninfected Pregnant Women Attending Antenatal Clinic in Harare, Zimbabwe.

This study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and risk factors associated with CMV acquisition among pregnant women in Zimbabwe. In a cross-sectional study, pregnant women were recruited in late gestation, seeking antenatal care at council clinics in three high-density suburbs in Harare, Zimbabwe. Anti-CMV IgM and IgG antibodies were quantified in serum using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Antibody avidity tests were used to distinguish active infection from viral reactivation in anti-CMV IgM-positive cases. Five hundred and twenty four women were…

How to Increase Vaccination Acceptance Among Apostolic Communities: Quantitative Results from an Assessment in Three Provinces in Zimbabwe.

A worldwide increasing trend toward vaccine hesitancy has been reported. Measles outbreaks in southern Africa in 2009-2010 were linked to objections originating from Apostolic gatherings. Founded in Zimbabwe in the 1950s, the Apostolic church has built up a large number of followers with an estimated 3.5 million in Zimbabwe in 2014. To inform planning of interventions for the 2015 measles-rubella vaccination campaign, we assessed vaccination status and knowledge, attitudes and practices among purposive samples of Apostolic caregivers in three districts each in Harare City, Manicaland and Matab…

Manuscript title: Facilitators and barriers to cotrimoxazole prophylaxis among HIV exposed babies: a qualitative study from Harare, Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Implementation of cotrimoxazole prophylaxis (CTX-p) among HIV-exposed infants (HEI) is poor in southern Africa. We conducted a study to investigate barriers to delivery of CTX-p to HEI in Zimbabwe at each step of the care cascade. Here we report findings of the qualitative component designed to investigate issues related to adherence conducted among women identified as HIV positive whose babies were started on CTX-p postnatally. Of note, Zimbabwe also provided nevirapine prophylaxis for HIV exposed babies, so the majority were giving nevirapine and CTX-p to their babies. METHODS: …

Evidence-based identification of key beliefs explaining adult male circumcision motivation in Zimbabwe: targets for behavior change messaging.

Male circumcision (MC) reduces HIV acquisition among men, leading WHO/UNAIDS to recommend a goal to circumcise 80 % of men in high HIV prevalence countries. Significant investment to increase MC capacity in priority countries was made, yet only 5 % of the goal has been achieved in Zimbabwe. The integrated behavioral model (IBM) was used as a framework to investigate the factors affecting MC motivation among men in Zimbabwe. A survey instrument was designed based on elicitation study results, and administered to a representative household-based sample of 1,201 men aged 18-30 from two urban and …

Serological detection of infection with canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus and canine adenovirus in communal dogs from Zimbabwe.

Domestic dogs are common amongst communities in sub-Saharan Africa and may serve as important reservoirs for infectious agents that may cause diseases in wildlife. Two agents of concern are canine parvovirus (CPV) and canine distemper virus (CDV), which may infect and cause disease in large carnivore species such as African wild dogs and African lions, respectively. The impact of domestic dogs and their diseases on wildlife conservation is increasing in Zimbabwe, necessitating thorough assessment and implementation of control measures. In this study, domestic dogs in north-western Zimbabwe wer…

Chronic cough and its association with TB-HIV co-infection: factors affecting help-seeking behaviour in Harare, Zimbabwe.

OBJECTIVE: To qualitatively investigate reasons why individuals who reported chronic cough of 2 weeks or more in a cross-sectional prevalence survey had not accessed community-based outreach or other diagnostic services. METHODS: This study was nested into a cluster randomised trial comparing two methods of providing community-level diagnosis for tuberculosis (TB). Twenty individuals (12 males) with previously unreported chronic cough, because of undiagnosed pulmonary TB in five cases, were interviewed. An additional 20 individuals who had attended clinical services participated in two focus

Biomedical technologies in context: Acceptability of a screening tool for sexually transmitted infections and bacterial vaginosis in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Novel point-of-care tools tailored to contextual needs are critical for improving sexually transmitted infection (STI) management. The genital inflammation test (GIFT) is a point-of-care test under development to detect genital inflammation. A potential use of GIFT is as a screening tool to identify asymptomatic women who may have a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or bacterial vaginosis (BV), followed by confirmatory STI- testing if GIFT-positive. This study assessed the prospective acceptability of GIFT within national healthcare sectors in South Africa and Zimbabwe, where STI diagnostic…
