Continuous fabrication of Janus liquid crystal elastomer fibers with programmable actuation.

Smart fibers, particularly liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) fibers, are pivotal in soft robotics and adaptive textiles. However, existing fabrication methods are limited to simple monolithic structures, hindering the realization of complex actuation behaviors. To overcome this limitation, we develop a continuous extrusion platform for producing Janus LCE fibers that emulate asymmetric biological structures, such as plant tendrils, thereby enabling sophisticated actuation. This approach seamlessly integrates an LCE network with a dynamic covalent polymer network, allowing programmable on-demand l

Inside the parrot beak-and-tongue apparatus: Unlocking a model system for dexterity research.

Dexterity, the flexible and precise control of objects, requires the integration of cognitive abilities, motor coordination, and anatomical specializations. Due to the evolutionary significance of the opposable thumb, dexterity research has traditionally focused on primate species. However, based on a review of current knowledge in parrot morphology, cognition, and neurobiology, we propose that parrots represent a highly promising model system for dexterity research. We highlight lineage-specific morphological novelties that turn the parrot beak-and-tongue apparatus into a multifunctional tool

Joint attention in autism: A narrative review of assessment techniques from behavioral observation to artificial intelligence.

Joint attention (JA), the shared focus between two individuals on an object or event, plays a pivotal role in social communication, cognitive development, and language acquisition during early childhood. However, JA is frequently impaired in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), highlighting the need for precise assessment to support early diagnosis and intervention. This narrative review explores the evolution of JA assessment methods, tracing the shift from human-mediated techniques to technology-driven approaches, including artificial intelligence (AI). The study analyzes research i

Reconstruction of orbital angular momentum eigenstates of light.

Vortex beams, carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), have found widespread applications in modern optics. However, they are highly susceptible to obstruction during propagation, degrading their reliability in practical scenarios. Although self-healing beams have been desired to address this challenge, their performance is limited by finite diffraction-free zones. Here we show an active reconstruction scheme, vortex reconstructor, combining bidirectional coordinate transformation with spatial filtering on the sorted plane to suppress the broadened profile and recover the original helical wave

3D-Printed Prostheses and Early Modern Iron Hands: A Method to Investigate the Lived Experiences of Amputees in the Premodern World.

This article advances a method developed by a historian and a mechanical engineer to learn about premodern amputees. Using a sixteenth-century iron hand from Germany as a foundational case study, the authors illustrate four components of an experimental approach for investigating fragile artifacts of prostheses. First, they present the creation of historically contextualized activities of daily living (ADLs), a concept used in modern prosthesis usability assessments. Second, the authors address the use of computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D printing technology to develop models of artifacts col

Emergent release patterning in microenvironments via oil-infused mesoporous surface interaction.

Diverse living systems and organisms harness the positional and directional distribution of solutes to drive essential functions. Developing engineered platforms that can mimic these complex spatial domains is crucial for achieving more effective operational biotech workstations. To this end, we first demonstrate that oil confined within the nanocavities of mesoporous thin films serves as reservoirs for hydrophobic drug release when immersed in aqueous media, modulating cell behavior in local environments. We further show that the spontaneous interaction of the mesoporous architecture with dis

The future of cancer therapy? Integrating oncolytic adenoviruses with epigetic modulation.

Therapeutic resistance remains a defining limitation in the management of advanced solid tumors, where conventional modalities including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immune checkpoint blockade often fail to achieve durable responses. Oncolytic adenoviruses (OAds) have emerged as tumor-selective and immunogenic platforms capable of inducing direct oncolytic and systemic antitumor immunity. However, their clinical efficacy is frequently constrained by intrinsic tumor resistance mechanisms, including impaired viral entry, antiviral immune responses, and immunologically "cold" tumor microenviro

Mapping subcellular microenvironments using oligonucleotide-directed proximity labeling.

Understanding how cells compartmentalize their biomolecules into discrete structures remains one of the fundamental goals of cell biology. The proliferation of proximity labeling (PL) technologies has been invaluable toward this goal, enabling biochemical "dissection" of compartments that would be intractable to classical biochemical methods. While robust PL approaches have long been established for targeting proteins of interest, targeting nucleic acids-RNAs and genomic loci-has remained significantly more challenging. Here, we review recent advancements in the field that overcome this longst

The Potential and Cost of Carbon Dioxide Removal Using Direct Air Capture with Land-Based Wind and Utility-Scale Photovoltaics.

The rapid deployment of direct air capture and storage (DACS) is critical for achieving emission targets, necessitating precise evaluation of the scale and cost of carbon dioxide removal. This study examines the availability of land, electricity generation, and geologic CO2 storage within the United States, estimating a technical potential for low-temperature, adsorbent-based DACS to remove approximately 9 gigatonnes of CO2 annually. By 2050, a substantial portion of this removal could be achieved at net-removed costs below $300/tonneCO2, though costs are highly variable depending on factors s

Histone-modifying enzymes as drivers and therapeutic targets in androgen-resistant prostate cancer.

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) remains the cornerstone of treatment for advanced, hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (HSPC), but responses are transient, and most patients ultimately develop castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), a largely incurable stage of disease. The mechanisms driving resistance are not yet fully understood. Recent data suggest epigenetic dysregulation driven by alterations in chromatin remodelers and histone-modifying enzymes (HMEs) contributes significantly to prostate cancer (PC) progression and resistance to androgen-directed therapies. HMEs control chromatin

Revival of neurophysin-I as a complementary biomarker for circulating oxytocin.

There is renewed interest in oxytocin (OXT) associated neurophysin-I (NP-I) as a surrogate biomarker of endogenous OXT secretion into circulation. OXT measurement in humans remains challenging because current assays vary in their specificity for free and protein-bound OXT, and OXT-related peptide species, including extended forms and peptide fragments, and results are influenced by sample handling and analytical methods. NP-I, a carrier protein that is co-synthesized and co-secreted with OXT, can be measured using a validated sandwich immunoassay without extraction. Studies support NP-I as a p

How effective are contrastive learning-based approaches for activity-cliff prediction?

Activity cliffs, defined as structurally similar molecules with vastly different properties represent a fundamental challenge in modern day drug discovery for property prediction models. While Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have advanced molecular property prediction, they inherently struggle with this problem due to representation collapse and node over smoothening. In this work, we evaluate the efficacy of incorporating various contrastive learning-based loss functions, including the Supervised Contrastive (SupCon) configurations into several GNN backbones to navigate this structure-activity l

Mechanistic evidence and assumptions in mycotoxin-gut interaction.

Mycotoxins are increasingly recognised as ecological mediators that act through a bidirectional gut-microbiota axis. Microbial metabolism governs toxin fate by driving detoxification, bioactivation, sequestration and deconjugation, whereas mycotoxin exposure reshapes microbial communities, disrupts epithelial barrier function and amplifies immune signalling. Across aflatoxin B1, ochratoxin A, fumonisin B1, deoxynivalenol and T-2 toxin, the microbiome emerges as both a determinant and a target of toxicity, with strain-level functional diversity influencing susceptibility, detoxification capacit
