Minimally Invasive Tubular Resection of Lumbar Synovial Cysts: Report of 40 Consecutive Cases.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar synovial cysts are a relatively common clinical finding. Surgical treatment of symptomatic synovial cysts includes computed tomography-guided aspiration, open resection and minimally invasive tubular resection. We report our series of 40 consecutive minimally invasive microscopic tubular lumbar synovial cyst resections. METHODS: Following Institutional Review Board approval, a retrospective analysis of 40 cases of minimally invasive microscopic tubular retractor synovial cyst resections at a single institution by a single surgeon (B.D.B.) was conducted. Gross total resectio

Self-assessment of anatomy, sexual sensitivity, and function of the labia and vagina.

Patient perceptions of genital esthetics are motivating requests for plastic surgeries that could change sexual sensitivity. There is little information about the sensitivities of labial and introital sites. The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between sexual sensitivity and self-reported sizes of labial and introital sites. Sixty-two healthy, sexually active, adult women (mean age 37.9, range 21-60) with no history of genital or vaginal surgery gave written consent to participate in this study. A modified version of Self-Assessment of Genital Anatomy and Sexual Function (L-SAGA

Assessment of the geometric interaction between the Lotus transcatheter aortic valve prosthesis and the native ventricular aortic interface by 320-multidetector computed tomography.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to assess the geometric interaction between the Lotus Valve System transcatheter aortic prosthesis (Boston Scientific, Natick, Massachusetts) and the native aortoventricular interface using multidetector computed tomography (MDCT). BACKGROUND: The interaction between transcatheter aortic valve prostheses and native anatomy is variable, although potentially predictable. The Lotus transcatheter device uses a novel mechanical means of expansion, the effect of which on native anatomic geometry has not previously been described. METHODS: Forty patients treated with t

Study of Normal Branching Pattern of the Coeliac Trunk and its Variations Using CT Angiography.

INTRODUCTION: Blood vessel anomalies are always interesting from embryological view and of considerable significance from a clinical or a surgical standpoint. Vascular anomalies are usually asymptomatic; they may cause problems in patients undergoing diagnostic angiography or any operative procedure. The length and course of the coeliac artery are variable and its branches frequently arise separately from the main trunk. Several other branches may additionally arise from the coeliac trunk, for example, inferior phrenic arteries, the dorsal pancreatic artery, and the middle colic artery. AIM:

Are Fassier-Duval rods at risk of migration in patients undergoing spine magnetic resonance imaging?

BACKGROUND: The Fassier-Duval (FD) rod is a stainless-steel device widely used to correct bone deformities and reduce the risk of fractures in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). Since these are telescopic expandable rods, there has been a reluctance to perform magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with OI secondary to a theoretical risk of migration during the MRI scans. The primary aim of this study was to assess the risk of migration of FD rods in patients who underwent MRI of the spine. The secondary aims are to assess the heating effects and artifact of these implants. MET

Focused post mortem dissection technique for harvest of rete mirabile in domestic swine (Sus scrofa).

BACKGROUND: Rete mirabile (RM) of the domestic pig is a popular animal model of arteriovenous malformations. The RM (Latin for 'wonderful net)' comprises the arterioarterial portal connecting ascending pharyngeal arteries and the internal carotid arteries, which exists in the skull base of even-toed ungulates. Although angiographic access of the RM is relatively easy, its post mortem procurement is complicated and its detailed technique has not been well described. OBJECTIVE: To present our focused post mortem dissection technique for undamaged and complete harvest of the RM. MATERIALS AND M

Aortic dilation in pediatric patients.

UNLABELLED: Aortic dilation at the level of the aortic root can be caused by a variety of congenital or acquired conditions that lead to weakening of the aortic wall. In this retrospective study, we sought to determine the frequency of different associated diagnoses from children with aortic dilation seen at a single institution. A total of 377 children (68 % male) met study inclusion criteria. Patients were classified based on the suspected or confirmed associated diagnosis in one of the following categories: congenital heart disease (241/377, 64 %), chromosomal (34/377, 9 %), Marfan syndrome

Long-Term Provision of Environmental Resources Alters Behavior but not Physiology or Neuroanatomy of Male and Female BALB/c and C57BL/6 Mice.

Few studies have evaluated the long-term effects of providing environmental resources to mice. This consideration is important given that mice are often maintained in vivaria for months. We evaluated the effects of providing simple cage resources (wood wool, cotton nesting material, a plastic tunnel, and oat cereal) compared with standard housing (solid-bottom cage with hardwood chips) to group-housed adult male and female C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice (n = 20/sex/strain/group) over 6 mo to determine whether these resources had a lasting effect on animal physiology, anatomy, and behavior. Outcome of transoral robotic surgery for stage I-II oropharyngeal cancer.

Traditionally T1-2N0 oropharyngeal carcinoma is treated with a single treatment modality, being either radiotherapy or surgery. Currently, minimally invasive surgery, such as transoral robotic surgery (TORS), is gaining popularity. The aim of this study is to assess whether T1-2N0 oropharyngeal cancer can be safely and effectively resected with TORS, and to determine the oncologic and functional outcomes. In addition, the long-term quality-of-life outcomes are reported. Between 2007 and 2012, 18 patients with early stage oropharyngeal cancers underwent transoral resection with the da Vinci rob

Carotid artery stenting: current and emerging options.

Carotid artery stenting technologies are rapidly evolving. Options for endovascular surgeons and interventionists who treat occlusive carotid disease continue to expand. We here present an update and overview of carotid stenting devices. Evidence supporting carotid stenting includes randomized controlled trials that compare endovascular stenting to open surgical endarterectomy. Carotid technologies addressed include the carotid stents themselves as well as adjunct neuroprotective devices. Aspects of stent technology include bare-metal versus covered stents, stent tapering, and free-cell area.

Efficacy and safety of autologous platelet rich plasma for the treatment of vascular ulcers in primary care: Phase III study.

BACKGROUND: Vascular ulcers are commonly seen in daily practice at all levels of care and have great impact at personal, professional and social levels with a high cost in terms of human and material resources. Given that the application of autologous platelet rich plasma has been shown to decrease healing times in various different studies in the hospital setting, we considered that it would be interesting to assess the efficacy and feasibility of this treatment in primary care. The objectives of this study are to assess the potential efficacy and safety of autologous platelet rich plasma for

Isthmic-vaginal smear cytology in the follow-up after radical vaginal trachelectomy for early stage cervical cancer: is it safe?

BACKGROUND: Isthmic-vaginal cytology is a follow-up method in patients who have undergone radical vaginal trachelectomy (RVT) for early cervical cancer. However, to the authors' knowledge, little is known regarding its ability to monitor patients and diagnose disease recurrence. Herein, the authors report their experience with cytology after RVT compared with cytology in patients after cone biopsy and women undergoing screening. METHODS: A database of 563 specimens from 303 patients was analyzed retrospectively (RVT in 361 specimens, conization in 102 specimens, and screening in 100 specimens

Retrocaval renal artery bifurcation is not a contraindication to laparoscopic right donor nephrectomy.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy is preferentially performed on the left side vs the right, even in instances where more complex arterial vasculature is present on the left. This finding is significant given the observation that living donor kidneys with multiple arteries are associated with increased incidence of ureteral complications in the recipient. One common anatomic variant, retrocaval bifurcation of the right renal artery, has potential risks that prompt the decision to procure left-sided kidneys with more complex arterial anatomy. However, these risks may be mitigated by th

Muscle anatomy and dynamic muscle function in osteogenesis imperfecta type I.

CONTEXT: Results of previous studies suggested that children and adolescents with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) type I have a muscle force deficit. However, muscle function has only been assessed by static isometric force tests and not in more natural conditions such as dynamic force and power tests. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess lower extremity dynamic muscle function and muscle anatomy in OI type I. SETTING: The study was performed in the outpatient department of a pediatric orthopedic hospital. PATIENTS AND OTHER PARTICIPANTS: A total of 54 individuals with OI type I
