Proteinuria developed in six of 81 hypertensive patients given captopril for at least four months (protein excretion, greater than 200 mg/24 hr). Two had previously elevated protein excretion. In all patients the increased protein excretion occurred by the fourth month of treatment. It subsided in four after two to nine months, despite continued therapy. In two of the four, proteinuria cleared completely within seven months after onset, while in the other two it subsided to the range of 600 mg/24 hr. However, in the remaining two patients proteinuria persisted during captopril therapy and was

We demonstrated the existence in the retina of an argyrophilic perivascular membrane comparable in all respects to that which exists throughout the vascular system. We compared our findings by light microscopy with those previously reported. We identified, by electron microscopy, the normal general location of the network between the basal laminae of the glial and vessel cells and demonstrated its selective staining with silver methenamine. These perivascular fibers, intercapillary strands, and bridges develop in relation to the process of retinal vascularization and the potential for forming

Cultured epithelial autografts (CEAs) represent a life-saving surgical technique for full-thickness skin burns covering more than 60% total … nted their degradation. Keratinocyte differentiation was also decreased using both fibrin matrices. Basement membrane protein deposition was mainly influenced by matrix whereas growth factors released from fibrin especially by hPBM were shown to enhance in vitro keratinocyte migration, proliferation, and epidermal substitute organization. Ultimately, epidermal subs …

As epiretinal membranes (ERMs), the internal limiting membrane (ILM) and the vitreous cortex are essentially transparent tissues, or translucent structures, nontraumatic removal may be challenging in various types of macular surgery. Vital dyes stain these thin tissues, thus allowing for better visualization of these structures during vitrectomy and selective 'membrane peeling' from the underlying retina. To avoid swirling of the dye within the fluid-filled vitreous cavity, and to better target the dye onto the macula, a fluid-air exchange is commonly performed. However, this may jeopardize vi

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a static encephalopathy occurring when a lesion to the developing brain results in disordered movement and posture. Patients present with sometimes overlapping spastic, athetoid/dyskinetic, and ataxic symptoms. Spastic CP, which is characterized by stiff muscles, weakness, and poor motor control, accounts for ∼80% of cases. The detailed mechanisms leading to disordered movement in spastic CP are not completely understood, but clinical experience and recent studies suggest involvement of peripheral motor synapses. For example, it is recognized that CP patients have altere

3-nitropropionic acid (3-NPA) is a natural toxin that is used to induce models of Huntington's disease (HD) in experimental animals. Here we injected 3-NPA into Sprague-Dawley rats in order to evaluate its effects on the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Evans blue (EB) extravasation was used to identify injured areas in the brains of the treated animals and immunostainings of endothelial brain barrier antigen (EBA), zona occludens-1 (ZO-1) and laminin were used as markers to characterize the effects of the neurotoxin on the BBB. Treated rats had a significant loss of body weight compared to controls

We examined effects of fibroblasts of different origin on long-term maintenance of xenotransplanted human epidermal keratinocytes. A suspension of cultured epidermal cells, originating from adult human trunk skin, was injected into double mutant immunodeficient (BALB/c nu/scid) mice subcutaneously, with or without cultured fibroblastic cells of different origin. At one week after transplantation, the epidermal cells generated epidermoid cysts consisting of human epidermis-like tissue. When the epidermal cells were injected alone or together with fibroblastic cells derived from human bone marro
