COVID-19 hospitalization rates rise exponentially with age, inversely proportional to thymic T-cell production.

Here, we report that COVID-19 hospitalization rates follow an exponential relationship with age, doubling for every 16 years of age or equivalently increasing by 4.5% per year of life (R2 = 0.98). This mirrors the well-studied exponential decline of both thymus volume and T-cell production, which halve every 16 years. COVID-19 can therefore be added to the list of other diseases with this property, including those caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, MERS-CoV, West Nile virus, Streptococcus pneumoniae and certain cancers, such as chronic myeloid leukaemia and brain cancers. Using epidemiological evidence to forecast population need for early treatment programmes in mental health: a generalisable Bayesian prediction methodology applied to and validated for first-episode psychosis in England.

BACKGROUND: Mental health policy makers require evidence-based information to optimise effective care provision based on local need, but tools are unavailable. AIMS: To develop and validate a population-level prediction model for need for early intervention in psychosis (EIP) care for first-episode psychosis (FEP) in England up to 2025, based on epidemiological evidence and demographic projections. METHOD: We used Bayesian Poisson regression to model small-area-level variation in FEP incidence for people aged 16-64 years. We compared six candidate models, validated against observed National

Using Bayesian time-stratified case-crossover models to examine associations between air pollution and "asthma seasons" in a low air pollution environment.

Many areas of the United States have air pollution levels typically below Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulatory limits. Most health effects studies of air pollution use meteorological (e.g., warm/cool) or astronomical (e.g., solstice/equinox) definitions of seasons despite evidence suggesting temporally-misaligned intra-annual periods of relative asthma burden (i.e., "asthma seasons"). We introduce asthma seasons to elucidate whether air pollutants are associated with seasonal differences in asthma emergency department (ED) visits in a low air pollution environment. Effects of hunger, satiety and oral glucose on effective connectivity between hypothalamus and insular cortex.

The hypothalamus and insular cortex play an essential role in the integration of endocrine and homeostatic signals and their impact on food intake. Resting-state functional connectivity alterations of the hypothalamus, posterior insula (PINS) and anterior insula (AINS) are modulated by metabolic states and caloric intake. Nevertheless, a deeper understanding of how these factors affect the strength of connectivity between hypothalamus, PINS and AINS is missing. This study investigated whether effective (directed) connectivity within this network varies as a function of prandial states (hunger

Bayesian and Frequentist Analytical Approaches Using Log-Normal and Gamma Frailty Parametric Models for Breast Cancer Mortality.

One of the major causes of death among females in Saudi Arabia is breast cancer. Newly diagnosed cases of breast cancer among the female population in Saudi Arabia is 19.5%. With this high incidence, it is crucial that we explore the determinants associated with breast cancer among the Saudi Arabia populace-the focus of this current study. The total sample size for this study is 8312 (8172 females and about 140 representing 1.68% males) patients that were diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. These are facility-based cross-sectional data collected over a 9-year period (2004 to 2013) from a ro

Spatial analysis of hepatobiliary abnormalities in a population at high-risk of cholangiocarcinoma in Thailand.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a serious health challenge with low survival prognosis. The liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini, plays a role in the aetiology of CCA, through hepatobiliary abnormalities: liver mass (LM), bile duct dilation, and periductal fibrosis (PDF). A population-based CCA screening program, the Cholangiocarcinoma Screening and Care Program, operates in Northeast Thailand. Hepatobiliary abnormalities were identified through ultrasonography. A multivariate zero-inflated, Poisson regression model measured associations between hepatobiliary abnormalities and covariates including

A hierarchical Bayesian latent class mixture model with censorship for detection of linear temporal changes in antibiotic resistance.

Identifying and controlling the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a high priority for researchers and public health officials. One critical component of this control effort is timely detection of emerging or increasing resistance using surveillance programs. Currently, detection of temporal changes in AMR relies mainly on analysis of the proportion of resistant isolates based on the dichotomization of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values. In our work, we developed a hierarchical Bayesian latent class mixture model that incorporates a linear trend for the mean log2MIC of t

Repetition priming effects for famous faces through dynamic causal modelling of latency-corrected event-related brain potentials.

Repetition priming, that is, the repeated processing of a stimulus, facilitates performance. However, the neural underpinnings of repetition priming for famous faces in terms of effective connectivity are not known. Here we investigated this problem using dynamic causal modelling of latency-corrected event-related brain potentials (RERPs). Source waveforms of RERP-derived sources in the Occipital Lobe, Fusiform Gyrus, Mediotemporal Lobe, Prefrontal Cortex and Anterotemporal Lobe of each hemisphere entered into models with only forward (F) or also with backward (FB) connections. Serum albumin and risk of cardiovascular events in primary and secondary prevention: a systematic review of observational studies and Bayesian meta-regression analysis.

The predictive role of serum albumin (SA) has been evaluated in primary prevention studies. We want to assess the association of SA with the subsequent risk of cardiovascular events (CVE) in primary and secondary prevention studies. We performed a systematic review and Bayesian meta-regression analysis. Studies were identified by PubMed and EMBASE database using a combination of the following terms and MeSH terms: "serum albumin", "myocardial infarction, "cardiovascular events", "percutaneous coronary intervention" and "coronary restenosis". No time restriction of the research was applied. Two

Multiple Machine Learning Comparisons of HIV Cell-based and Reverse Transcriptase Data Sets.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes over a million deaths every year and has a huge economic impact in many countries. The first class of drugs approved were nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. A newer generation of reverse transcriptase inhibitors have become susceptible to drug resistant strains of HIV, and hence, alternatives are urgently needed. We have recently pioneered the use of Bayesian machine learning to generate models with public data to identify new compounds for testing against different disease targets. The current study has used the NIAID ChemDB HIV, Opportu

Hypothermic Oxygenated Machine Perfusion of Liver Grafts from Brain-Dead Donors.

Hypothermic oxygenated machine perfusion (HOPE) was introduced in liver transplantation (LT) to mitigate ischemia-reperfusion injury. Available clinical data mainly concern LT with donors after circulatory-determined death, whereas data on brain-dead donors (DBD) are scarce. To assess the impact of end-ischemic HOPE in DBD LT, data on primary adult LTs performed between March 2016 and June 2018 were analyzed. HOPE was used in selected cases of donor age >80 years, apparent severe graft steatosis, or ischemia time ≥10 hours. Outcomes of HOPE-treated cases were compared with those after static c

Suspected heroin-related overdoses incidents in Cincinnati, Ohio: A spatiotemporal analysis.

BACKGROUND: Opioid misuse and deaths are increasing in the United States. In 2017, Ohio had the second highest overdose rates in the US, with the city of Cincinnati experiencing a 50% rise in opioid overdoses since 2015. Understanding the temporal and geographic variation in overdose emergencies may help guide public policy responses to the opioid epidemic. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We used a publicly available data set of suspected heroin-related emergency calls (n = 6,246) to map overdose incidents to 280 census block groups in Cincinnati between August 1, 2015, and January 30, 2019. We used a

The landscape of enteric pathogen exposure of young children in public domains of low-income, urban Kenya: The influence of exposure pathway and spatial range of play on multi-pathogen exposure risks.

Young children are infected by a diverse variety of enteric pathogens in low-income, high-burden countries. Little is known about which conditions pose the greatest risk for enteric pathogen exposure and infection. Young children frequently play in residential public areas around their household, including areas contaminated by human and animal feces, suggesting these exposures are particularly hazardous. The objective of this study was to examine how the dose of six types of common enteric pathogens, and the probability of exposure to one or multiple enteric pathogens for young children playi

Influence of experimental pain on the spatio-temporal activity of upper trapezius during dynamic lifting - An investigation using Bayesian spatio-temporal ANOVA.

High-density surface electromyography (HDsEMG) provides a detailed analysis of a muscle's spatial distribution of activity. We applied a Bayesian spatio-temporal statistical method to quantify how acute nociception and task repetition alters the upper trapezius instantaneous spatial distribution of activity during dynamic muscular contractions. Ten male adults performed repeated lifting of a 1 kg box between shelves positioned at hip and shoulder heights with a cycle time of 3 s for 50 cycles under four conditions: baseline, isotonic and hypertonic saline injections (nociception) to the right

Selecting Shrinkage Parameters for Effect Estimation: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.

We present a method for improving estimation in linear regression models in samples of moderate size, using shrinkage techniques. Our work connects the theory of causal inference, which describes how variable adjustment should be performed with large samples, with shrinkage estimators such as ridge regression and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), which can perform better in sample sizes seen in epidemiologic practice. Shrinkage methods reduce mean squared error by trading off some amount of bias for a reduction in variance. However, when inference is the goal, there
