Thirty Years of LGBTQ Pre-Publication Knowledge Production in Higher Education Research: A Critical Summative Content Analysis of ASHE Conference Sessions.

The purpose of this critical content analysis was to explore LGBTQ pre-publication knowledge production by examining conference sessions at one of the leading U.S. academic conference for higher education researchers. Between 1986 and 2015, there was an increase in the number of sessions focused on LGBTQ individuals and topics. However, these sessions comprised less than 1.4% of the total sessions. The majority of sessions used broad terms to discuss LGBTQ topics and often conflated sexuality (e.g., gay, lesbian) with gender (e.g., transgender). When specific sexualities were identified, the m

Feasibility of a large multi-center translational research project for newly diagnosed breast and ovarian cancer patients with affiliated biobank: the BRandO biology and outcome (BiO)-project.

INTRODUCTION: Large translational research projects may contribute to further progress in cancer treatment by exploring molecular biology, immunologic approaches and identification of new prognostic and predictive factors. Therefore, the BRandOBio-project combines a clinical registry for collection of patient and tumor characteristics with a biobank comprising tumor and liquid biopsies. In addition, sociodemographic, environmental and lifestyle factors of included patients with primary newly diagnosed breast or ovarian cancer, other rare malignant ovarian tumors or gestational trophoblastic di

Research Priorities in Pelvic Venous Disorders in Women: Recommendations from a Multidisciplinary Research Consensus Panel.

Pelvic venous disorders (PeVDs) in women can present with chronic pelvic pain, lower-extremity and vulvar varicosities, lower-extremity swelling and pain, and left-flank pain and hematuria. Multiple evidence gaps exist related to PeVDs with the consequence that nonvascular specialists rarely consider the diagnosis. Recognizing this, the Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation funded a Research Consensus Panel to prioritize a research agenda to address these gaps. This paper presents the proceedings and recommendations from that Panel.

Practical help for specifying the target difference in sample size calculations for RCTs: the DELTA2 five-stage study, including a workshop.

BACKGROUND: The randomised controlled trial is widely considered to be the gold standard study for comparing the effectiveness of health interventions. Central to its design is a calculation of the number of participants needed (the sample size) for the trial. The sample size is typically calculated by specifying the magnitude of the difference in the primary outcome between the intervention effects for the population of interest. This difference is called the 'target difference' and should be appropriate for the principal estimand of interest and determined by the primary aim of the study. Th

Overcoming Translational Barriers in Acute Kidney Injury: A Report from an NIDDK Workshop.

AKI is a complex clinical condition associated with high mortality, morbidity, and health care costs. Despite improvements in methodology and design of clinical trials, and advances in understanding the underlying pathophysiology of rodent AKI, no pharmacologic agent exists for the prevention or treatment of AKI in humans. To address the barriers that affect successful clinical translation of drug targets identified and validated in preclinical animal models of AKI in this patient population, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases convened the "AKI Outcomes: Overc

Early-Stage Translational Research in Perinatal Medicine.

BACKGROUND: Pre-clinical research, which encompasses studies in animals and in the laboratory, has made significant contributions to the improvement of neonatal outcomes. METHODS: Here, we describe examples of how pre-clinical research can be the starting point on the journey to the development of new interventions to improve neonatal care and outcomes and discuss recent progress in ensuring methodological and ethical rigour in pre-clinical research involving animal models. RESULTS: Studies in pregnant sheep led to the serendipitous discovery that preterm lambs born after exogenous corticost

WHO/IVI global stakeholder consultation on group A Streptococcus vaccine development: Report from a meeting held on 12-13 December 2016.

While progress towards a Group A Streptococcus (GAS) vaccine has been stalled by a combination of scientific, regulatory, and commercial barriers, the problem persists. The high and globally-distributed burden of disease attributable to GAS makes vaccination an imperative global public health goal. Advances across a range of scientific disciplines in understanding GAS diseases have made the goal a realistic one and focused attention on the need for coordinated global action. With a view to accelerating GAS vaccine development, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Vaccine I

New Approaches to Continuing Medical Education: a QStream (spaced education) Program for Research Translation in Ovarian Cancer.

Continuing medical education (CME) is challenging and often has limited impact on clinician behavior or patient outcomes. This study examined the impact of an online Qstream education program on senior clinicians to determine its utility for increasing clinician knowledge about the latest guidelines regarding genetic assessment and consideration of genetic testing for women with particular types of ovarian, fallopian tube and primary peritoneal cancer. Participants were recruited into a pilot study that involved responding to case-based scenarios at spaced and repeated intervals. At the comple

[Research advances in autoimmune liver diseases in 2016].

Autoimmune liver diseases are a group of abnormal autoimmune-mediated inflammatory hepatobiliary injuries, mainly including autoimmune hepatitis(AIH), primary biliary cholangitis(PBC), and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). The diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune liver diseases, an important type of non-viral liver disease, have become a prominent issue in hepatology. In 2016, many new advances have been achieved in the clinical and basic research on autoimmune liver diseases, including the phase 3 clinical trial of obeticholic acid, the proposal of UK-PBC risk score, and the research on

Role of Dynein Axonemal Heavy Chain 6 Gene Expression as a Possible Biomarker for Huntington's Disease: a Translational Study.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor dysfunction, cognitive deficits, and psychiatric symptoms. The primary genetic cause is an expansion of cytosine adenine guanine (CAG) nucleotides of the huntingtin gene, which codes an important protein involved with neuronal signaling. The severity of HD correlates with the number of CAG repeats and individuals with longer expansions have an earlier onset and more severe symptoms. A microarray study conducted by our research group showed alteration in DNAH6 gene (encoding dynein axonemal heav

Sepsis: frontiers in supportive care, organisation and research.

Because of its high incidence and clinical complexity, sepsis is a major challenge to clinicians and researchers and a global burden to healthcare systems and society. Despite recent progress, short- and long-term morbidity, mortality and costs remain high in both developed and developing countries. Thus, further improvements in supportive interventions and organisation of care are likely to have a substantial impact upon global health. In this narrative review, invited experts describe the challenges and progress to be made in sepsis research and care in the near future. We focus on supportiv
