Two design solutions such as modular and mono-block Ti6Al4V porous implants for femoral defect repair were implemented and compared. Static stress analysis on each model was performed via finite element analysis to investigate potential critical elements that might cause system failure under physiological loads. Prior to calculations, a mesh convergence study was realized by varying the minimum element sizes. The entire bone-prosthetic system was modeled, and design optimization was performed. For mono-block implants, a less stressed configuration was found by changing the plate design. Compar

This article focuses on the series of viewpoints on the prevention and treatment of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw issued by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (AAOMS), and puts forward several uncertain issues from a clinical perspective. The points of doubt in diagnosis include the definition of drug categories and the threshold of bone exposure duration, as well as the significance of imaging features of bone lesions for diagnostic and treatment decisions. The concerns in terms of prevention include drug risks and disease incidence, tooth extraction and

A 5-year-old, intact male Bengal cat weighing 5.2 kg was referred for the fixation failure of a right femoral fracture. Multiple surgical revisions failed, and atrophic non-union was diagnosed. The cat was then admitted for a final revision surgery using locking plate fixation in conjunction with rib and iliac crest autografts and recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2). The fracture site was debrided and stabilized before filling the defect with 1.8 cm of rib bone autograft. The residual space in the defect was then filled with an iliac crest autograft. Finally, a 3 ×5 cm abs

Comminuted fractures of the proximal humerus impair shoulder function, resulting in more or less severe disability. They rank among the most frequent fractures in adults, with incidence increasing with age and the degree of bone loss (osteoporosis). Among all currently used methods of stabilization of proximal humeral fractures, the best outcomes are afforded by angularly-stable plate fixation and interlocking or reconstructive intramedullary nailing. Both methods produce comparable results enabling bone union and restoration of limb functionality. Nevertheless, in elderly patients with advanc

A 23-year-old man suffered a severe crush injury with fracture of his left thumb base phalanx and destruction of his extensor pollicis longus tendon. Immediate plate stabilisation and soft tissue coverage was performed; however, a recalcitrant pseudarthrosis developed in this compliant non-smoker despite three revisions with avascular iliac crest grafts for interphalangeal joint arthrodesis, corticocancellous bone application and hardware exchange. An attempt to improve thumb vascularity and soft tissue cover with a pedicled Foucher flap as well as through extracorporeal shock wave therapy fai

Although IGF-I has been identified as an important growth factor for the skeleton, the role of IGF-I on embryonic bone development remains unknown. Here we show that, in IGF-I-deficient (IGF-I(-/-)) mice, skeletal malformations, including short-limbed dwarfism, were evident at days post coitus (dpc) 14.5 to 18.5, accompanied by delays of mineralization in the spinal column, sternum, and fore paws. Reduced chondrocyte proliferation and increased chondrocyte apoptosis were identified in both the spinal ossification center and the growth plate of long bones. Abnormal chondrocyte differentiation a

Three-dimensional imaging of osteoarthritis is so far limited to late stages of the disease. In this chapter we introduce microcomputed tomography (microCT) as a new imaging tool that offers exciting features for diagnosis of earlier disease stages and for disease monitoring. microCT provides spatial resolution better than 100 microm, but the size of the objects that can be scanned is restricted to several centimeters. The strength of X-ray-based techniques like micro CT is the excellent visualization of bone. Therefore, the main application of microCT in osteoarthritis (OA) will be the analys

OBJECTIVE: This mini-review synthesizes evidence for safe and effective pediatric joint mobilization, discussing red flags, offering clinical recommendations, and addressing current research limitations.
METHODS: A PubMed and PEDro search, supplemented by foundational pediatric musculoskeletal resources, identified peer-reviewed articles and guidelines, which experts collaboratively evaluated.
RESULTS: Pediatric musculoskeletal systems, with open growth plates and lower bone mineral density, are vulnerable to shear forces. Safe force thresholds remain undefined. Therefore, thorough history t

Fractures of the zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) represent one of the most frequent midfacial injuries and, if untreated, can result in significant functional and aesthetic sequelae. While open reduction and internal fixation is the standard of care for acute fractures, late presentations remain challenging due to bone remodelling and altered anatomical landmarks. Secondary corrective options include skeletal repositioning via zygomatic osteotomy or implant-based camouflage. We present the case of a young female patient with a displaced ZMC fracture left untreated following urgent cranioplast

In the northern coastal hemisphere, different ecotypes of the threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) can be distinguished phenotypically by a different number of lateral bone plates and by their body shape and size. We focused on (1) anadromous sticklebacks, which migrate from the sea to rivers to spawn and (2) freshwater sticklebacks, which live in rivers all year round. Migration behavior is a key feature in the evolution of ecotypes, but the underlying mechanisms of migration are poorly understood. To learn more about possible orientation mechanisms that could lead to goal-directed…

This case report presents the treatment of a 13-year-old male patient diagnosed with high-grade osteosarcoma of the proximal tibia. Management involved a combination of transphyseal resection, extracorporeal irradiation, and reconstruction using a vascularized fibula autograft. The tumor was excised with clear margins, as confirmed intraoperatively through frozen section analysis. The resected tibial segment was sterilized using 50 Gy extracorporeal irradiation and subsequently reimplanted. To restore structural integrity and vascularization, a 14 cm pedicled fibula graft was harvested and ins

Total wrist arthrodesis can be used to treat symptomatic end-stage wrist osteoarthritis after failed conservative treatment. It can also be considered the last-resort option when partial fusion, proximal row carpectomy, denervation or prosthetic arthroplasty is unsuccessful. Currently anatomic pre-contoured low-profile plates with angle stable screws are available with or without inclusion of the carpometacarpal joints. Generally, patients are satisfied after total wrist arthrodesis, although they are not always pain-free, even when wrist flexion and extension remain limited or absent. Complic

Iatrogenic mandible fractures are rare complications from third molar removal surgeries. While most documented cases stress risk factors inherent to the patient and tooth presentation in fractures' etiology, appreciation of the risk factors underlying the practitioner's skills is scarce. Here, we describe an intraoperative fracture in a healthy 26-year-old female resulting from an incompatible surgical technique during the right mandibular third molar removal. The patient showed facial swelling, pain, malocclusion, and significant mobility of the fractured segment. The surgical management invo

Misfolding mutations in cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) cause it to be retained within the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of chondrocytes, stimulating a multitude of damaging cellular responses including ER stress, inflammation, and oxidative stress, which ultimately culminates in the death of growth plate chondrocytes and pseudoachondroplasia (PSACH). Previously, we demonstrated that an antioxidant, resveratrol, substantially reduces the intracellular accumulation of mutant-COMP, dampens cellular stress, and lowers the level of growth plate chondrocyte death. In addition, we showed tha

INTRODUCTION: Proximal interphalangeal joint (PIP) is one of the joints exposed to upper limb injury. The dorsal fracture-dislocations of the PIP is a common injury. Treatment of cases with small avulsed bone fragments is challenging. Stable fixation with rapid recovery is important in these patients.
HYPOTHESIS: Volar buttress plating a new technique in treatment of the dorsal proximal interphalangeal joint fracture dislocations but the results of it is unknown.
METHODS: In this case series, 21 patients with dorsal fracture-dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal were studied. We used

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of periprosthetic fractures after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is rising due to an increasing number of TKAs performed annually and the growing elderly population. Like periprosthetic fractures of the distal femur, periprosthetic tibia fractures are primarily treated with operative fixation; however, there is limited scientific literature that has reported outcomes of periprosthetic tibia fractures treated with modern plating techniques. To our knowledge, this is the largest series of non-intraoperative periprosthetic tibia fractures treated with open reduction int

INTRODUCTION: The management of displaced fractures of the distal clavicle remains controversial, particularly in younger patients where there is no consensus as to which surgical intervention is best. Each surgical method has unique surgical complications and rates of persistent pain and post-traumatic arthritis. We report an innovative surgical technique using a plate fixation augmented with minimally invasive tension slide coracoclavicular fixation using a cortical tenodesis button (8.5 mm).
METHODS: A single-surgeon series, comprising of eleven cases, underwent retrospective review. A low

BACKGROUND: The use of operative treatment for clavicular fractures is increasing, despite varying results in previous studies. The aim of this study was to compare plate fixation and nonoperative treatment for displaced midshaft clavicular fractures with respect to nonunion, adverse events, and shoulder function.
METHODS: In this multicenter, prospective, randomized controlled trial, patients between 18 and 60 years old with a displaced midshaft clavicular fracture were randomized between nonoperative treatment and open reduction with internal plate fixation. The primary outcome was evidence
